Balancer spec
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:20:54 AM »
Looking through the NHRA spec and there is a requirement for the balancer to be SFI rated 18.1 mandatory.  So what happens If I don't have a balancer.  since my motor was in a sprint car it is setup with a KSE gear drive and the crank snout drove a water pump.  I am not running pump so I just blocked off the adapter and run it like that.  Will I have a problem with Tech on this.

Good question, I'm all ears for what the pros have to say. My understanding is that the damper spec exists to prevent damper explosion or a runaway damper (or outer ring). Many blown engines don't use damper at all.

I would expect it just won't apply, but a good friend of mine had to put a battery disconnect on his fed to satisfy the tech guy "because the rules said you had to have one" even though he didn't have a battery on the car.

A "HUB" is not a balencer so SFI spec is not required.  As to the battery discconnect, some of these Tech people are worse than NFL refs

good point on the balancer, Bruce.  Should I have a mag shut off on the back?

The only time on needs a switch at the back is when there is a battery to "RUN" the car  (starter, fuel pump, igntion) a small mc battery to run the trans break does not need one also.

I would never put a mag only switch at the back of the car for sombody else to trip instead of the driver. Starter comes over to the driver and motions the driver to shut it down
