Hi from a British newbie.
« on: October 25, 2013, 01:17:04 AM »
Cheers Glenn, thanks for welcoming me into the group.  I'm really a newbie at this side of the sport, as although I've been going drag racing since the early 60s, initially I was on the organising side & first as part of Race Control & then Tech Crew at Santa Pod Raceway, although I actually helped set the track up in '65 before it opened in '66.

I stopped working there in '78 when my first son was born & we decided that having a newborn baby whilst working every other weekend at a race track wasn't the best enviroment (some may disagree!!).  Still retained an interest in it though but eventually got heavily involved in rodding & still am.  However about 6 or 7 years ago my good friend & team boss, Dave Gibbons, found his old altered that he'd built in the late 70s, out in Austria & asked me if I'd go out there with him in my Mercedes MPV to collect it, as it had a tow hitch & none of his cars did!  Ever since then, I've been part of his race team in Super Pro ET, but as he's quite a slightly-built guy, he's the only one that can get in the altered!

Earlier this year, a fellow competitor decided to sell the little FED he'd bought 7 years previously & never run!!  He spoke to Dave & mentioned it & initially Dave's thought was for us all to share in it & take turns to drive it.  That plan was abandoned when both he & our crew chief decided they couldn't afford it really, but by then the damage was done, I was hooked!!!  We went to view the rail & as long as I could actually get in it to drive it, I decided I wanted it!!  So I made an offer that was accepted & that was that, my fate was sealed!

The car was originally built in 1973 to what was at the time, a pretty well-established formula for British dragsters, using a frame design by Harold Bull (the leading Junior dragster competitor), a BMC Mini / Midget A-Series OHV 4 cylinder engine bored out to 1293cc (79ci), supercharged (cabin blower) & injected running on methanol & up to 30% nitro.  The trans is a BW35 auto, modified to 3 forward gears only, using an AP racing 4-plate slider clutch system for starts only, a heavily modified Minor rear axle with a Quaife LSD & modified Ford half shafts.  The front end is based on Ford Anglia spindles & originally had Raleigh motorcycle wire wheels fitted. but due to difficulties in finding speed rated tyres to fit, these were changed to the alloy ones currently on it.  The rest of it is traditional FED stuff but as it is now, the chassis is not taggable & with no reverse, it's not legal to run in competition here, so for now I will run it in RWYB & historic events & see how I get on.  If I'm still in love with it in a couple of years time, I may well get Dave to build a new legal chassis & find a way of getting a reverse gear in it & go racing, until then I just wanna have fun (as the song goes)!!

There's lots of pics of it on my Facebook page & 3 videos of us firing it up (the first time in over 7 years!) & me driving it for the first time, it's best time was 10.93 @ 122mph running 30% nitro (Harold Bull got his almost identical rail down to a best of 9.75 & a top speed of 136mph before he retired!).  There is also a thread about the car on the UKDRN nostalgia website, started 6 years ago, asking where the car was (it's called Spirit, by the way). Thanks for staying with me this long, hope it was of some interest to you guys, more news when we start the new season next year.

Maurice.

Great introduction!

There are a number of 6 cylinder guys here, but I think you are the first 4.

I brought some of the pictures over for you (it is easy as I just used the links)

Below is the original ad card for the car which Simon gave me in 2004.

Here's a picture of the car when Dave Miller run it from NDRC news August 80.

Here’s a shot from my own collection of Dave Miller’s ’Spirit’ pictured in green metal flake taken at an NDRC Midlands/Banbury Drag & Custom Club race at Long Marston.

here's some pics I took in '94

Here's another one for your collection MisteR Tee taken at Long Marston in 1981/82.

As people will tell you I am a real fan of green vehicles

Guessing with it being FED even British had to get steering wheel in correct place.   Welcome aboard.

Thanks Glenn, I would just add that those captions are not mine, but the ones attached to the indivual pics.  The only one that's mine is the one with the date stamp on it (yes, I know it says 2016, I can time travel!!), of the car on the trailer that came with the deal.  I do have pretty much a complete photo history of the car from when first built to today, plus I have been in touch with all the previous owners (3).  Sadly, the original builder, Dave Miller, died 4 years ago but I have spoken with his widow who was thrilled that his dragster is still around.

Thanks guys, glad to be here & hope to learn a lot.  Researching slicks at the moment as the ones on the car must be pretty old by now, but don't know that much about them as far as compounds etc.  The wheels are 7 x 15 & the tyres on there are 26/8.0 x 15 Hoosiers, I really wanted to put white-wall pie-crusts on, however not only are they taller, they are horrendously expensive over here, so that's been sidelined & I'm on the lookout for Goodyear or even M & H (what was on it in the beginning).  Anyone know about such things??

I can build 16"x 2" Anglia wire wheels, but 16" is rare, do you have tires for the wheels ?  New 16" tires are hard to find unless you are OK with Chen Shin uni-tread tires. 17" is allot more common and with more choices of wheels and tires, and is still period correct for FED.

Hi Jon,  sorry but I've only just looked back on here & saw your reply.  I think we'd discussed this by email a while ago anyway, I managed to find (or rather, they found me!) a pair of original Goodyear Eagle Front Runners, 22 x 2.5 x 17" from another racer over here but I'm a bit confused as to what wheels they fit.  Everything I've read so far says they fit 2.5 wheels but is that the overall width size or the tyre bead (well) size?  Only asking as a motorcycle parts man was questioning whether his 2.15 x 17 rims would fit those tyres.

The most common 17" wire wheels are 1.4" bead to bead [ well], and some are 1.2", 1.6", 1.85".
The Front runners will not bead-up on the 1.2", and are difficult to bead-up on the 1.4" matter-a-fact most race tyre guys will not try to mount front runners on wire wheels.  I have found I can mount them on 1.4" rim with some mods.
I have not needed to mount front runners on anything wider than 1.85" wide rims.
The issue is getting the tyre to completely bead all the way onto the rim. If you just pinch the beads of the tyre to 1.4" you will see there is not much "elbow room" for the inner tube to press the beads all the way onto the rim.
An option is use a 1.6 or 1.85 rims, however those wide rim are no longer made. Hayden Wheels does have some Akront and Borrani 1.6 and 1.85" wide 17" rims in stock.

So, do you think they will mount on 2.15" rims?  I have a pair of them now & one 1.85" & will continue to look for another one.
