FED guys more do it yourself then average RED
« on: May 20, 2013, 07:24:15 AM »
Have noticed that more guys on site seem to be of the do it yourself mindset than on other sites that are RED dominated. Anyone else think that the nostalgia FED guys are more of this type.
IMO racing is all about building a winning car.
Nothing against the guys who buy most everything, heck some of my racing money comes from doing work for other racers.

Don't know too many other FED guys . . . I only machine my own parts/do my own work because I am too poor to pay someone else to do it  ;D

Can't really speak for anyone else but I enjoy making spacers/brackets etc and knowing I made them after everything is put all together.

I think most of us feel the same way . There is a lot more satisfaction when you do stuff yourself . I have never built my own chassis but at some point I might try it . Tyler it look's like you are getting close .

Except for the main chassis, my brother and I built about everything on out RED's.
They are shorty's though, so nothing fits like the big guys use.
(180" wheelbase)
 ;D

Also run Pontiacs so not much fits from other suppliers either.
(like Glenn's engine)

Built all the steering linkages, throttle setups, shifters, engine mounts/brackets/plates,rear end mounts, brake systems, dashes, etc.

While I agree economy sucks since 2008. If  I had bank full of money I would just have better machine and tooling to make more of mine.

I guess I should have stated different. It seems most Ive met with FED's are of the mindset that doing as much as possible yourself is a lot of what racing is about. Kind of goes with the building a car that was part of the golden age of dragracing where inovation ruled and won most of the time.

Plus I guess I still love the challange of tuning as much or more than  driving. I keep saying if I can get the idiot drawing the numbers for lottery to pull the right ones that I would have engine shop and build engines, dyno them and give them away to make room for next engine and testing idea.
