lyndwood dragster
« on: February 15, 2015, 06:18:57 PM »
I'm pulling the trigger on this thread a little early but,  a friend of mine is Looking at trading his car for a lyndwood dragster.
At this point he doesn't know much about the dragster but is curious to know if there was a way it could be certified and actually raced. Any opinions? It's 112 inch wheelbase but that's about all we know at this point.

Pictures would help a great deal, so without them all I could say is NO.

For future reference to anybody reading this is and has any questions about frames--- The computer is a great instrument in order to connect to people, but it is not a crystal-ball

In a word....yes but it would take any and all historical value out of the car.  And you would need to be sure of the integrity of the pipe  before adding more pipe to it as it's 50+ years old.       Heres some examples of Lyndwood Eliminator II chassis all from the 1959-1960 era and one later 4 bar lyndwood which as the last style Bilbow built.  the yellow flathead is a  96"wb eliminator II, the blown green one is a 130"wb eliminator II, the silver & blue blown chevy (mine)  is a 98"wb eliminator, the gold one is a early 60's 4-bar small tube  lyndwood Eliminator III  and the purple rail  was an original eliminator II but has been heavily modified to pass NHRA tech and now it is what it is?

I forgot to add..... I would not use a lyndwood original as a competition vehicle,  some Lyndwoods were ordered and built  by Pat Bilbow at his Wilks-Barre Pa welding plant  ( there is a way to tell if it's a factory built rail) but alot were just pre-cut kits that were welded by the buyers  at there own shops.

these are historical pieces of racing history, if he wants to go fast do it in a modern made/old style inspired dragster.

FYI-  the purple lyndwood pictured was run out of texas the way it sits up until just a few years ago when it was sold to someone up here in the PA/NY/NJ area.

I wonder what the overdrive ratio is on this.

Not sure who built this car but this was my dads car in the early 80's he added 60" to the wheel base to get the car to have 150". It also had a Lincoln Zephyr banjo rear end

There it is, his plan moving forward is to make repairs to the basic parts of the car and make it a roller again, and ultimately after playing with it a little sell it, to someone who knows more about the authenticity/history of these kind of cars.

...thats a  chassis research  k-88  and not a Lyndwood.  the back half looks like a K-88 and the main frame & front look like a needle nose TE-440?  still a nice find and it looks to be in decent shape, good luck with it.
