dragster weight
« on: September 28, 2014, 01:36:44 PM »
Well I went to weight the dragster yesterday. Simple right, trailer it over to the weight scales at the corner truck stop, push the car up onto the scales and get the weight. Wrong, so I had to take the truck, trailer and car over the scales, Then go unload the car, and go over the scales again, Subtract the second weight from the first, gives the dragster weight. Anyway, my WORM dragster with a small block Chev, powerglide, ready to race minus me and 2 gallons of methanol, 1220 lbs. Lighter than I thought.

Not bad should get you in close to 1400.One thing folks never seem to understand about fed's they are lite.Average 4 link dragster 2000 lbs race ready.  600 lbs is a bunch of et.Not to mention you can run same number wiht lot less power.

 Now what does she run?

I haven't had it out yet. I did have it running, and tried the transmission while up on stands. I will have to wait until next spring I guess. I am trying to finish my other car this year also.

I gather from the photos that you did the body yourself rather than getting it from Worm. I also presume that you have a floor in the cockpit unlike the Cen-Pen car that I saw at Milan this weekend where you could see the ground. All that it had was the Worm pedal plate and there was nothing else to keep anything in or out of the cockpit on the bottom side.

Those guys were really saving weight    :)

We made a nice fitted floor for our worm car and have a  .125 thick seat bottom that was formed a little before we used a Creafoam kit to make molded custom insert--It turned out very comfortable--I was a little surprised.

I think Main trouble with Worm cars are that some customers are not racers / car builders / experienced--- and see them like a Factory Five Cobra sort of kit.
I think the overall quality of "Nostalgia" cars ( include gassers/ rods/ A's / etc ) I have seen at meets this year as far as welding / basic engineeering / and safety has been scarey---I have seen many a ride I would not get out of the Electric Chair to pilot.

So..overall--a Worm or S&W etc is no  better than the finishers experience IMO.

I am stoked that so many cars are turning out--and it is amazing how many are being built right this minute--Gassers are coming out of the woodwork and next years fields will be Big in our area but like I said--some of the TV copy cat cut / weld / build engineering is downright horrible looking.

The No Tech Run What Ya Brung is a big lure and TV makes folks think it is easy--I really appreciate that Roo is just pointing out as delicate as he can that going real fast in a dragster is no place for the " Buy a Harbor Freight Tig and make a car crowd"
It is serious business that needs to be treated as such!!!

No help that we get so many "opinions ' from different inspectors and tech guys at every track---THAT is where Roo and other real dedicated pros come in--See them FIRST before you make a mess out of your kit or wallet-- or hurt yourself.

Just because you have scissors does not mean you can be a barber.
I have always had a fascination with fast cars at the expense of more normal character development

My car wasn't welded with a Harbour freight welder. I have a Linde 250 amp square wave with a stainless chiller.Ive been welding for 30 plus years, and this isn't my first car either. Here are some pictures of the other project that you should be able to see. Oh and it has a 8 point, tig welded cage too. I wonder how many people on this forum, who are very critical of others, actually build their own cars? I received the chassis tacked together ( it was cheaper than buying the tubing up here) . I welded the chassis, made the seat, body, narrowed the 9",put the glide together, and after the block was machined, put the motor together.
  Cheers,
         Roger
