Bad Alcohol??

Can alky test good but still be bad?

I have some that tests good with a hydrometer but the car ran horribly with it in the tank.

 I'm sure it's chemically possible, but I've never heard of it. I'm not sure what would be in the fuel that would keep the SG testing correctly and yet not burn right.
