Front Engine Dragsters / You Learn Something New Everyday!
« on: May 10, 2015, 12:41:20 PM »
This forum is a great place to learn and...vent!  I finally have a chassis and engine builder I can trust and they stick to their word.  So guess what, I got stuck by the paint & body guy.  He calls me the other day to inform me my panels are done all 8 of them for my shorty body FED.  I dropped them off Dec. 29th??? and I was quoted $50 / hr plus materials.  My father owned his own body shop, I've learned a little about paint work.  I figured any body guy worth his butt, can prep and paint these panels & scoop in 20 hrs. So I figured the bill would be between $1500 and $2000, wrong....he tells me I owe him $3700....which breaksdown to $1000 materials and $2700 labor.  Granted the color is a PPG special color and the panels are painted on both sides.  He said the buffing took a long time...give me a break.  Comments please...you can make me feel better or worse..I can take it.  P.S. - this is why I gave up racing 20 years ago, I see some things never change !!!!!!!!!!

Yes Bill, Bob and I have been discussing it and have a game plan to start.  It made 793.6 at 7500, then started to fall off at 7600. Torque was very flat from 5000 to 7600.

Guys,
Is there a "rule of thumb" for determining a starting shift point from your dyno sheet?  Some people say use and rpm a few hundred before peek torque?  Powerglide, small block chevy combo...

thanks,
John

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Checking and adjusting PG band

Dan, what is the best method to check and adjust the PG band on a freshly rebuilt glide?  I've heard some people say "use a torque" value and some people say "4 turns method"?  and how often should it be checked?

thanks,
john

That method worked like a charm, used Q-tip with alcohol and it cleaned up very nice...great advice.

I'm going to disable the start retard tomorrow and hopefully that cleans up the idle. timing is locked at 34 deg.  I'm going to check the crank trigger pickup polarity also, I believe that can cause havoc.

It likes 34 degrees, it does have the 20 degrees start retard, I'm going to disable that function and try it. It's supposed to go away at >500RPM. Mallory says certain radical cam profiles affect the start retard function.  Will check trigger wiring too.
