Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Making that first run in your new car
« on: June 21, 2015, 09:36:33 AM »
Lots of wisdom being shared, thanks Rooman   I personally would never take a new car to anything other than a test & tune & make a few easy runs to start out.

I built my car from scratch, My friend Keven helped. The complete build working one to two days a week on it, took one year almost to the day. The NHRA tech inspected it and tagged it for TOP FUEL  5.99 & faster. Total cost was $5,000 as a roller less the safety gear.

Yes It's monkey see Monkey do !!  Most all the glide guys will say whatever to make the Glide fall into the "PUT A CHEVY & A GLIDE" in everything mentality. Even if you don't run a Chevy, They will still say "put a glide in" I run a T400 in my FED.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: 1.69 low gear
« on: April 28, 2015, 09:45:09 PM »
I chose a Torqueflite because it has 2.45/1.45/1.00 thinking the lower first gear combined with 4.56 rear gears will make my converter work better at multipling torque. I'm a hand brake guy have I made the wrong choice? I want a car I can drive.

I think of it this way, I run a 3 speed (T400) and run a 3.90 or even a 3.50 gear. With the low gear launch the converter is done doing its job right at the hit. The motor will stay in it's peek torque if you shift it right and the tall gear will give great MPH without buzzing the motor. You do not need a 4.56 gear or a killer converter with a 3 speed.

Every steel roller cam I've ever owned was bought used as a core & reground to make it usable for my combo. Most charge around $80

Right hand DS block uses a one piece rear main seal, older 2-piece seal is a left hand DS block,
Milodon #31173 rt hand DS w/KO
Milodon #31147 is without KO

SBC's 79 & later are right hand DS -  one piece seal is 87 & later.

The biggest difference you will notice, is that the car you load up to go home with after a day of racing will usually look the same as when you got to the track with it.

Altereds / Re: BATTERY PACK OR BATTERYS

I welded a angle iron frame to the bottom of a small hand truck, this receives a plastic milk crate with 3 car batteries 36 volt.  I welded up a cradle above that to hold the starter. tip it back and it rolls, we lift the crate out & put it in the truck to go to the line. We charge the battery's individually , no need to disconnect them. 36 volt charger is faster, I found one for my forklift on EBay.

I made the very first one of these adaptors way back in the late 70's.  I had bought Gene Adams's A/F fed   & decided I wanted to run a auto trans. I made my adaptor plate & flywheel very crude but it was the best I could do with the tools at hand. I never sold one but later when Dave Tuttle (CCE) built his FED  he asked to copy it, I loaned him my Super Comp motor and adaptor & he made up a more accurate one & ran my motor until his motor was finished. I would think anyone with a good mill could make up a very nice one.

Your shoulders need to be above the attachment point. 2 inches above should be enough.

A Ford hemi for $100. ? Now that is the buy of the year! Any pictures?

The Lincoln DOHC 5.4   they are in junk yards everywhere, but not for $100.  This is the baddest motor made in the US. It finished 1st,2nd,3rd, in the engine masters contest last year. It's gone 5.80's, 220  on turbo alky. anyone (but a Chevy guy) could just buy a carb top & run a distributer off one of the cams, have the cams reground, new pistons & rods & have a real Hemi Cammer that will fly  for cheap. All the Chrysler & Chevy guys cried the blues after the bad Fords ran in the Engine masters last year, I am sure that they will never allow them back.

Back in the late 70's I ran a FED with a early Hemi, 331's & 354's  All the time I would be approached at the track If I wanted to buy some old Hemi parts & I always said yes. I bought everything I could & would run adds & sell of the stuff I had no use for. It turned out I made more money than I had invested, so the parts I kept and ran were always free.
I remember one night at OCIR we ran against a 55 Chevy & Keven beat him. In the cool down lane I went over to shake his hand and say good race, the guy went off on me big time, You with your big dollar Hemi & sandbagging just pisses me off. I just stood there for a moment and said to him, look It's just a bunch of junk parts thrown together, it just happens to run real good( 8.70's ) and we dialed a lower ET than we have ever gone. This just made him madder, so I tell him just give me a few minutes to unbolt the motor and I keep my mag & injectors & you can have the motor for $400 bucks. This just made it worse, so I just walked away.
Later The guy came over to our pit and apologized, it so happened that a few other racers overheard his rant & told him that it was just as I said, a bunch of old parts thrown together to go out and have fun.
