Woo Hoo! The GRP connecting rods finally showed up. They're like little bars of silver, but probably cost more. Here's a picture of one of the little beauties next to a stock Ford Flathead rod. Now I can get started on ordering the pistons.

Wanted to buy / 1955 Desoto Hemi blocks
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:22:37 AM »
We popped one of our engines over the weekend and are getting a tad low on blocks. We need to bring a few more along and are looking to by a few more blocks. A little carnage from last weekend.

Guys
This is towards Andrew's comment. I would think it would only be half of the 7" between your helmet and roll cage. Gotta consider half that 7" is from the waist down. There is also the leg to body length ratio, can be same height with long or short legs. I'm 6'6" with a car built to my size. A friend about 6'2" has 5" between helmet and cage. As they say results can vary. Won't really know until you hop in.

I don't have any direct experience with his chassis but you shouldn't have a problem fit based on his specs. I guess for me it would be about aesthetics. The site says it fits someone that's 6'5". With that, if you're 6", that would mean there would be 7" between the top of your helmet and the top of the roll cage. I don't know, that just seems like a big gap. Also take into consideration the chassis is build with 1-1/2" .095 wall tubing. That's just really thick. But hey, do whatever is needed to start racing.

Spud Miller's Cave / Fuel pump flow variances
« on: June 12, 2014, 07:52:32 AM »
Thanks for the info Spud.

Regarding the Enderle 80A-1 and Hilborn PG150C-1 pumps. New, both advertise 7.0 GPM, #100 @ 4000 RPM. I've been looking at used pumps and in the case of Hilborn, I see flows range from 5.68 GPM to 6.30 GPM. At what point is the flow too low and the pump requires a rebuilt? How much variation do you see in GPM on new pumps? From your experience, which pump has the ability in delivering consistent flow over time.

Thanks,

Andrew

Spud Miller's Cave / Belt drive fuel pump plumbing question
« on: June 03, 2014, 10:42:44 AM »
I’ll be running a belt drive fuel pump with limited space. What is the best pump/plumbing setup for this? How close to the pump does the fuel shutoff valve need to be or does it matter. How about the primary bypass valve? I was thinking about picking up an Enderle 80A-1 pump, which only has one outlet, then route that up a foot or so to a 4-way shutoff valve and plumb in the primary bypass there.

Any suggestions on this?

Thanks,
Andrew

My father-in-laws motto is “I don’t what to buy it; I just want to borrow it”. Back in the mid 90’s he borrowed these solid machined billet heads designed by Virgil Hanson. He ran this best time in the injected fuel flathead, something like 8.48@155. When it came time to buy them, he opted to return them instead. Luckily for me Virgil still had them and I decided to buy them.

The chamber design is exactly what I was looking for with the main combustion area moved over the exhaust valve and accommodates a pop-up piston.  Not much left for me to do with them except to find someone who can O-ring them, if it’s even possible.

Anxiously waiting for the Moldex crank, GRP rods, and billet cam blank I ordered to arrive.

dreracecar,

I've considered going to 2.4 but will stick with 2.6 for this build. I'll PM you with details.

Roo Man's Room / Is this a legal butt weld splice?
« on: April 29, 2014, 10:43:50 AM »
I’m unable to find any company that can bend 1-3/8 x 0.058 4130 tubing with a 6” radius. Well, I did and they want $500 for 4 bends. Now I know why most chassis builders use larger diameter and thicker tubing… they can make the bends on a manual bender.

I need a wider shoulder hoop than what’s available (Mark Williams, The Chassis Shop) because I’m 6’5”. What I’d like to find out if I can use a 2” spacer to widen the shoulder hoop with an interior sleeve. It needs to meet the SFI Spec 2.6A (7.50 Seconds & Slower). They allow for a single butt weld splice in the center of the upper frame rail, I just wonder if this is legal as well.

Thanks,
Andrew

Wanted to buy / Wanted - FED front Axle and other stuff
« on: April 21, 2014, 08:33:08 AM »
Looking for a chrome-moly tube front axle around 42”-44” wide (kingpin to kingpin) with a 5”ish drop for Anglia spindles. Bare finish would be preferred but not necessary. Also looking for a Hilborn 150 # fuel pump, which I'll be a belt drive setup, and a front torsion bar.

Also, I'm interested in a Mickey Thompson magnesium 8 ¾ carrier if any of you have one squirreled away.

Thanks,

Andrew

I have magnesium bronze bushings to insert into the lifter bore then I will have it back spot face cut to accommodate the larger foot of the lifter. I know that the gains are probably minimal with this style of lifter but it's something I've always wanted to try.

You're probably going to see a lot on my engine build for this thread until I can start on my chassis. Well, after 9 months, I now have my completed lifters. The just returned from being DLC coated. While they where at it I also had my wrist pins coated.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Methanol / Nitro in epoxied heads?
« on: March 28, 2014, 09:04:30 AM »
We run 90% nitro with epoxy filled heads/block and have no problems. Lately, at the rate my wife goes through engines, we haven't had a block last more than two years, although we have another engine that's been running for over 10 years without any issues.

What would be a reasonable price if I where to set a reserve for it on eBay, or this site for that matter. Front Borrani 17" wheels, rear Romeo Palamedes magnesium wheels, Old rear (don't know the ratio yet) with drum brakes. 141" wheelbase.
