Title: Build a budget set of zoomie sbc headers for under $100
Post by: ricci32 on April 23, 2013, 07:05:36 PM
Been looking for a used set of zoomie headers, nothing really available so i looked into building a set. mandrel bent bends were very expensive like $20 a bend and then get flanges. I then went to several exhaust shops about buying tubing and having it bent also crazy cost and ulgy shoe marks. So i was in home depot and i noticed thin wall emt electrical conduit 90 deg bends 1.5 inch but it looked kinda big when i measured it od  it was 1.75  so i went home looked in a jegs catalog and ordered flanges 1.75 oval port with gaskets and header bolts for $47 dollars. local electrical supply place sold me eight bends for $ 4.68 a bend. everything was at the house wen i got home. Out to the shop the correct lay back was aprox 50 degrees made a jig in the vice a clamp below the vice jaws as a depth guage and clamped a piece of angle to the back side of the vice as a stop so when i squeezed the tubing oval each would be the same after makthe ends the same installed them in flanges checked the angle with a angle finder and clamped the other end between two wood 1x4s to maintain spacing angle and keeping them even then tacked them to flanges. under 2hrs start to finish except for a strip to to hold all the ends together. instant cool retro header take a look.

I expect the EMT is galvanized. I know there are hazards welding the stuff. Also doubt if it will take the heat especially at the bends.

The bends are .o68 thick, thicker than any header tube and galvinized on the outside which i removed with a sand blaster. no issue with welding after they were clean.

Like you, i enjoy building everything that I can. This a good tip.            The J-bends, etc. from the suppliers such as Jegs are usually 16 ga which is about .063. Looks like the only differences in the two are galv. and the bend radius. The large bend radius like you have is more "old school looking". I have a set of homebuilt zoomies on my car, built out of chassis tubing.  I'm gonna learn to post pics. I'm gonna, I'm gonna...... ::)

There are really two different ways to post pictures.

One is to put the pictures up on a web posting site and provide a lint to it here.

The second more common one is to upload them from your computer.

This may sound complicated but it really isn't.

You want your pictures to be 800 X 600

The way I down size my pictures is I e-mail them to myself. When you select a picture to be e-mailed your software will ask you if you want to send them full size or downsize. One option will be to downsize to 800X600.

Select the 800X600 and e-mail them to your self.

When they arrive in your in box save them to a folder on your computer.

Now you are ready to post a topic with pictures, enter your text into the box, directly below the box is "Attachments and other options" when you click on this you will be able to browse your folders and click on the pictures you want to attach. You have to do one picture at a time.

If this does not make sense send me the pictures and I will post and attache them to a topic you would like the associated with.

FWIW, most upload sites have an option to scale your images when you upload them as well.

I know imageshack does . . .

I went the "expensive" route but jegs had the flanges on sale for $20, does that count?  ;D
