Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: What does a Glide need for My Level?
« on: December 14, 2014, 01:38:25 PM »
Starting at the front working back.
If your input shaft is a turbo spline you will need a bushing in the stator support of the pump.
Sounds like you have a good pump.
6 clutches in high gear would be good 7 would be better. I use Alto Red Eagles, and kolene steels. with the thin clutches you can get 7 in the drum without machining the piston.
A dual ring servo is great low cost upgrade. And Kevlar or Red Line band is a good choice.
A 1.76 planetary will be fine for your combination seeing as you are foot breaking.
on the extension housing you will need to stay with the after market one as the yoke used with a bearing is different than one used with a bushing.
You can put a modulator plug in place of the solenoid and run it with out problem, it simply holds the brake valve in the release position.
The book from JW is a very good book with lots of good info and instruction for your project.

Good luck with your project and if you have any questions I will do my best to help you with answers.

We hand mount ours and take them to a local shop for balancing.

Any good SFI flex plate will be satisfactory, making sure you go with the proper balance for your motor. As far as stall speed goes, the rule of thumb is 1000 to 1500 rpms under your shift point. The heavier your car the lower your stall. If your 3000lbs you will want to be around the 1500 rpm below your shift, if your 2000lbs you could be around 1200 rpm below shift

Next weekend is the PRI Show, my plan is to stop and spend some time with each of the major transmission parts manufactures talking about all the new stuff coming out and how well the latest stuff has been fairing in the real world. If there are and questions you would like to ask of any of the manufactures post them here and I make it a point to ask take notes and post the answers shortly after on the following week.

Thanks, Dan

Mostly from the band. Teflon rings are a must with an aluminum drum. The thing I like about the TSC pump is all the passage ways between parts are o-ringed, this mean little to no cross feeding between circuits.

I personally run the TCS Products Aluminum Pump. Have ran it for years with no problems. As far as the aluminum drums go, they just do not have the life span to make them worth the cost in my budget racing opinion. With that said I have talked to Art @ Coan and they are working with new coatings and other things to make them better. One of my goals at the PRI Show is to quiz all the major after transmission parts makers on the progress of their drums. I will post all the info I can gather on this subject as soon as I can after the PRI Show.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: Stock Case vs Aftermarket

Well there is no doubt the stock powerglide case has far exceeded it's design standards. We have beat on them for years and they take it for the most part, not bad for something designed for 170 hp!

Good Question.

The most common problem we see with a stock case is bell housing cracking, this happens mostly in door cars. With the info you gave I would say you should be fine with a stock case. I have seen stock cases in some of our Div3 super quick cars, and they seem to work fine. If someone is starting to run faster than 4.50 most trans builders (myself included ) run more line pressure to insure good clamping force of the clutches and band, This will result case flex in low gear as the band apply piston tries to push the adjuster out of the case. I guess if I had to draw a line in the sand it would be around the 850hp range. I personally run them in both my cars, and recommend them on all new builds. If you were thinking of making the switch do it when your current shields go out of date, this makes the actual cost of the case less because you would be replacing or re-certing your shields.

Thanks for asking,
Dan

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: Powerglide Vent

To the best of my knowledge NHRA is now requiring vents be ran to a catch can. The vent hole in the case is the right size to be tapped 1/8pipe. Most just use brass fittings and 1/4 plastic air line to do the vent to can process.

Hope this helps, Dan

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: trans temp
« on: October 12, 2014, 03:03:03 PM »
I'm wondering if the by-pass in the pump is stuck open. If it's open it let most of the fluid by-pass the cooler. Something else to look at would be the front sealing ring on the input shaft, this can also cause heat build up if it's missing or damaged. We double enter our cars on occasion and rarely see temps get to 180.

Couple of questions. Do you run  trans cooler and if so what size and does it have a fan?

It was to meet you as well. I will do my best to help in anyway I can.
