Front Engine Dragsters / Throttle cable trouble
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:47:15 AM »
I cant remember last when such a simple problem turned into such a head scratcher. My old engine used a braided cable on the hilborn injector. The cable ran over the motor plate from the rear of engine. When the throttle was pushed the cable pulled injector out towards the zoomie. Worked OK. New motor has a kinsler injector and the way it is set now needs to pull rearward. One more bend was required and just cannot get a smooth cable feel.
I think I'll need to flip my lever and pull from the front of the engine with a morse type cable. While I'm at it I should re engineer my pedal. Its the cast style that pulls from the rod slot.
Before I order parts I thought I'd check  to see what's working best.
Thanks in advance guys ;)

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: wheels, screws and liners

If you decide to try screwless be sure to mount without tire soap or bead grease.
Some door car racers in my area use Aquanet hairspray for bead seating and no screws.

Bill I don't think the percentage of tire growth number is  linear. Rim size and tire pressure will be big factors. Perhaps one of the experts will chime in with a formula. I'm interested too. I just switched to the 2585 and 12 in rims.

I'll bet you'll be fine with Paul's recipe. For a little more boost you might consider a MSD boost retarder. Mine allows me to run mid grade gas in my street rod.  An 8-71 at 1 to 1 on a 525 BBC.

Front Engine Dragsters / Crankshaft to converter problems
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:13:13 PM »
Putting the new motor in my dragster. I discovered the Callies XL sprint car crank has a 2 1/4" internal register and my converter hub is 1 3/4. Looks like I'll need to bush down about 1/2". Has anybody ran into this? Does Callies  or the converter company's make a bushing. If not it should be easy enough to spin one out on the lathe.

Roo and dre. Have you seen the bounce problem worsen when chute tow line was not mounted at the correct height? I'd imagine pulling the hind end of the car up at deployment wouldn't help.

Can't say enough good about the power to fuel economy ratio of the late 5.9. I did eventually have some injector issues but that was it. Over all a very solid platform.

Dave on the bouncing, does it help if you let the car settle momentarily before gradual hard braking? Are you throwing out laundry?

I had a 2006 Dodge. If I remember correctly 06 is the last full year production of the 5.9 Cummins. I think it was the best combo of power and fuel economy of any light truck I've owned. I'm on my 4th Dodge Cummins. I drive a 2012 6.7 now and feel the 06 5.9 liter was superior. My 12 has aprox. 50 ft. lbs. and 25 HP more power but burns way more fuel. On the average the 5.9 was good for 5 mpg more economy in all conditions and would still pull the race trailer easily at 75 or 80 mph when ever I wanted to.

Lots of variables. I run a 6" bar with a bit of flex. I have the guys set my bar using the the widest part of a 3/4 inch open end wrench between the wheel and ground at loaded weight.

Welcome to FED
My 2 cents would be make sure the car has a current certification tag.
On the engine I'd only pay core price on it unless it is a "known engine".
