Front Engine Dragsters / Re: GOT MY LICENSE...FINALLY
« on: May 28, 2019, 11:07:43 PM »
CONGRATS! you're hooked now!
I run the JR fuel tire that Jon recommends. but my combo makes a BUNCH of low end torque and hits the tire hard, so I started upping the tire pressure. I usually run 8psi, unless its a really bad track I'll go up for more traction. for your combo try 7- 7-1/2 and see if you get a little more wheel speed which might help with the wheelies, or lower your launch rpm, or add weight to the front end.
like the guys said, soft on the brakes, parachute helps.

I ran a radiator cap housing off the the old water neck location.(cadillac 500) i used a a 32psi radiator cap because I get paranoid about cracking cylinder heads without a water pump. I later found corrosion issues because I didn't drain the water between races (using water wetter) so I went to a 15psi "rad cap" and drained the water between races if it was going to sit for a while. but to answer your question, yes. I ran a puke bottle. the thermostat housings come drilled 1/8npt so I ran a small pushlok 3/16"? pneumatic line all the way to the back of the car by the parachute where it mounted with a breather so if i overflowed it the water would be behind me. but since it was mounted above the motor it would suck the water back in as it cooled. rarely had to add water unless I got it really warm.

Wanted to buy / Re: advanced ET roller

paul, i said 38" because my current car is 30-1/2" and id like to be able to pull the tranny without moving the frigging motor forward. but yes, 42-44-47 would be great!

I need to talk to billy, I've never actually hung out with him and he lives 45 minutes from me. I think he wants a little more than my sponsor is thinking dollar wise, but it sounds like its worth it.

Jon, if you could send me any info on that chassis in walnut creek, that sounds interesting.

Wanted to buy / advanced ET roller
« on: May 24, 2019, 03:05:11 PM »
Hey guys! I spent above my pay grade and built above my ability, now I have a motor that is capable of running faster than 7.50 but a chassis that isn't.
I'm looking for something fairly specific but shouldn't be too hard to find.

190-210" FED (225" wont fit in my trailer, unless you know someone that wants to buy my beater 24' trailer)
6.0 cert
able to accept a glide and with the availability to put a clutch in it.
the motor needs to be at least 38" out
9" rear preferred because i run odd gears 3.23

I have a sponsor that says he wants to put my car in his showroom and buy me another chassis.
supposedly nobody has gone faster than 7.30's with a Cadillac motor. hoping my new mill will do that on alcohol, but its built to run nostalgia A/fuel although i fully understand i don't have a chance against doc and drew. I'll most likely just run NE/1 but would like to reset that record on fuel.

Let me know if you have something and I'll send it to my sponsor.

Justin (925) 321-666one
located east of frisco.

Phone won’t let me copy a link, but spud has an article on his site called belligerent butterfly’s that should help.

When you think about it, you’re effectively building a moonshine still. And I have ..um... allegedly run one once or twice...
As you heat the mixture you will watch the liquid temp rise gradually but the air temp in the line arm will stay room temp and then all of a sudden go right to the boiling point of methanol, at this point you turn on the water to your condenser and viola-methanol starts dripping out. Methanol has a lower boiling point than ethanol (149vs173) and is the stuff that makes you go blind from lousy moonshiners.
The boil will stay at this temp until the methanol is gone and then all of a sudden jump up to the next phase change, the boiling point of ethanol and  then eventually water.
In theory if you had a tall reflux column still you could probably save the nitro.

Otherwise a centrifuge would probably work too...

They make gfi breakers for hot tubs. They’re not cheap, but something to consider if water/electricity isn’t your thing.

Drag Racing / tire shake ideas?
« on: April 09, 2018, 08:27:53 AM »

a friend of mine is battling tire shake issues. Here's a good slo-mo viddy. They've tried different tire compounds and pressures, but no luck. blown alky sbc, 7.60 index, glide, leaving flat on the converter. If they hop up the motor to beat the shake, the car runs too fast for the index.
They're talking about stiffer sidewall tires.
i keep thinking just raising the tire pressure until it quits, but i've never dealt with this problem either.
wonder what lowering the launch rpm or a higher stall converter?
Maybe using a pneumatic throttle controller like what Greg has?

Update, he begrudgingly answers emails when you tell him that you’re disputing his credit card charges. Funny how that works.
He said that he did not make a mistake on the price, and after a long detailed email in which I mentioned that if he had returned even one of my 10 phone calls or emails we wouldn’t be doing this dance and I asked again if the cam was setup for rollers, I got.

“This is not worth the time to fight over. We will credit you 800.00”

I personally wouldn’t let him grind a cam for my lawnmower at this point. Once I get my pistons I’ll degree every lobe ad make sure it’s skippy.

I called Schneider and a local cam guy here in the Bay Area and they both said it’s fine to run on roller bearings. There isn’t a special heattreat as long as it’s the right blank. Logically I would’ve called LSM, but steve is a dick and doesn’t return calls or emails.

Alan, this is an 8620 billet cam (according to redline racing cams), I bought this blank still in the rounds from a guy that does tractor pulling with a big caddy. He had LSM make a handful of these blanks all at once to save money, especially since it has a special nose on it to drive a Hilborn pump.
I chose to run roller bearings because Cadillac engines oil their cam bearings very poorly (my old 90lb seat pressure single valve springs on a .600 lift cam had problems wiping them out)  and to make matters worse the block I had already had a scarred up cam tunnel from a zealous guy removing the old cam bearings. This motor will have springs that are 800lbs on the nose and will get a dry sump oil system just for overkill. Shooting for easy 7.60’s on alky NA. And into the 6’s on nitro down the road a little.

Follow up:
I was trying to bribe the secretaries there with expensive wine to simply find and ship me back my cam blank. A week later I get an email with an invoice for $1832 and that my cam is on its way home. (Still had no idea what specs it was ground to) cam shows up, with a cam card, everything looks as it should be but no notes about being ground for roller cam bearings. I can’t find much info on the web about the cam being special, but I’m pretty sure the journals need to be really hard. Anyone know if there’s a difference in cam bearing journals for roller bearings? I hit the corner of a cam lobe and a journal with a mill file and the journal felt noticeably softer. Starting to think that I got hosed big time.

Mine sits between the 3rd and 4th row of lace rivets on a set of chuck Taylor’s. Haven’t adjusted it since. (A lot of my friends use this height) although I have different combo, 31” tire, 3500 stall, 500” motor.

Guys thanks for the detailed responses!
Flyer, that was my next question! You should line up the top of the pipe with the top of the port right?

Front Engine Dragsters / Zoomie size?
« on: February 21, 2018, 08:49:23 PM »
I need to build new zoomies for the new motor. Because the new heads have a different bolt pattern.
529” injected alky/nitro 7000rpm limit
1.88 exhaust valve

Anyone ever try step tube zoomies? My current ones are 1-7/8-2” and work fine, but no dyno numbers to compare to.

I’m leaning toward 2” step to 2-1/8”, roughly 18” oal? (Old ones are 25”oal) But could go bigger? Could just do one size tubing without a step?

Anyone ever play with stainless for zoomies?
