Roo Man's Room / Re: Questions on gear ratios selection.
« on: July 14, 2014, 05:35:58 AM »
If unsure of ratio ebay has good deals on gears at times. Buy used set and try it,if works great if not you will have good idea which way you want to go.I just picked up two use 4.11'a for 190 bucks.Lil brother took one for backup and Im going to test with other.

As for honest idea of what engine will do I have desktop dyno program and give it correct head flow ,cam, compression and few other things and it will get you very close. Have run dozen or more comparison to real world dyno numbers and gotten with then 2 to 4 %.

Not sure this helps. I just got new gear for my FED,225",526 injected Hemi.PG 1.69 low. I picked 4.11 with 1.69 low because I will mainly be doing bracket and 90% will be 1/8 mile. 4.11 is low enough to give good performance w/o being on edge traction wise on sometimes questionable tracks. Being consistent is my main goal. If had not gotten deal on 1.69 and had gotten 1.80 I would have went with 3.90. I want to keep it mangable on starting line but I want to make sure car can get up on tire and not shake.

Now with 526 hemi I ave 4.5" crank and good amount of lowend torque.Im looking to keep rpm  around8500 in 1/4 max. With my combo I should be right about 8400 to 8600 in 1/4 and its rare to run barcket race around here on 1/4.I do have little different combo than most.RED's are different  my nature of design and most FED's are sbc  or blown and not alot in brackets.Well not around here anyway. I did hit up on good set of gears for 100 bucks and I figure its cheap to see if I am where I want to be or if I need something else.

If ran more headsup I would have went with 4.30,but rpm at line would be 9100 to 9300 range.

MY plan is to build a open trailer designed to be enclosed later.  I would love to get hold of some extruded aluminum like Goldrush uses in thier trailers. Could build floor with bolt on side rails and  remove them when could afford to do aluminum encloser.

Open trailers are cool and gety  lots of attention for car,but as stated enclosed is really the best.Car is dry and safer/Keeping folks from messing with car halps avoid extra lawyer fees after catching them. With the numerous thefts of complete rigs now days I would hate to see how manyarts would disappear from car on open trailer over night.

Man feeling better about this deal. Engines out at 50" .Battery in nose, fuel tank behind front axle centerline and hopefully nothing on nose needed. Wheelie bars is right at 5 1/2 '. Chassis is slip joint with limiters that can make rigid in cpl minutes with two wrench's.  should have lots of chassis tuning options. Now the light bulb different issue, been working on him all my life.

Glenn,
Good and bad with Hemi thing. Good points strongest thing out there. If look at round and hit up higher class alky cars you can get good deals. Fuel stuff I would say stay away from. Now blocks and cranks you can get deal on thru Holbrook Performance(Jimmy Rector) ,Wizzards  Warehous(Tom Aykers).Heads and vavletrain same thing. ROds go new. Intake for blower deal lots around. On heads go with older fuel style for more parts intercahngablity. Old BAE fuel style work great if find a set not beat to death.

Down side parts not a readily available in used market as BBC. Nowhere near as many parts at track if need something. Cost depends on new or used. Im running injected Hemi in my FED.Reason I have 3 blocks,3 almost new cranks and 2 sets of heads plus lots of spare parts. If not I would go BBC.

Agree Glenn.Thats one great thing about injection.Run it a little bit rich(maybe .010 or so) and it will have very little change with weather. Now with a craperator it may or may not change have nopt had one since 1985 and do not see it happening anytime in future either.

Roo Man's Room / Re: front wing on a fed.
« on: June 24, 2014, 06:52:31 AM »
angle would be hard to say, well for me anyway. Speed, where its located(clean or dirty air) ,wing design and how much downforce is needed. All have big effect.  I would start low maybe 2 to 4 degrees and move up a degree at a time and see how it effects handling,et and mph. Remember more angle more drag don't go so far that your slowing car down with ton of drag. On well designed wing theres a break point where drag goes up miltiple to downforce achieved. On my wing on the TA/D after 8* drag went up big time but downforce increase was about a 1/4 of drag increase. It also had down force at negative 2*.

We where running  Alcohol Funny at  Darlington and car was moving on top end.Added 3/4" lip at 15*  to deack and car went straight as arrow and actually picked up cpl mph. It don't take alot at times.

Don't know about Peter But Scotty has already told me he has never wanted to drive a FED. Ain't nobody putting htis thing in winners circle except CHRIS. Going with fairly loose converter and running 14" wide tire, not big but more than most fed's run and 6600 stall(target for new converter anyway).

I did not spend past 3 years scrimping my butt off to put someone else in seat. I built chassis, build motors, building trans piece by piece now and will drive win ,loose or draw its all on me and I like it like that. Now if someone else wanted to pay I'm ok with that.LMAO

Been while since drove anything without blower and clutch, but I might remember how to do it.Last glide I drove was 1988 in 66 Nova 454 injected with tube chassis me a dad built from Alston kit. I could put 5 or 6 runs down and be within .01 and not auto shift,no sle.Just my foot controlling rpm and hand shifting when motr felt and sounded right.I think thats what they called driving.Heck 6 runs 1 night and had 5 dead on the same to .001.  Not saying past 26 years  of headsup balls to the wall racing hasn't made the idea of lifting hard to handle. If drivers problem I'll kick his, well you know.

One thing I have noticed larger portion of guy with FED's and nostalgia stuff all seem to do more work themselves, maybe why not a cookie cutter as most bracket and class cars are.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Holes Through Motor Plate.
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:21:36 AM »
I have hole in lower frame rail for cpl things to pass thru. I welded a tube type reinforcement around it and did the same at the exit hole in front of the engine. I also have passages thru both uprights. I don't like passing anything thru motorplate,it makes removal lot more work IMO.
