Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Potential FED Build
« on: January 09, 2020, 08:39:53 PM »
Hi Lynn, Happy New Year and Welcome to the site.
We are using an 8 3/4 Chrysler, full length glide and coupler, the engine plate is 44" front the diff center line.
As you are finding out there are so many different combinations of FED. As other have stated build to suit your situation (shed/trailer etc) but safe and resaleable. With your horsepower target you can get away with a shorter/lighter chassis but be ready for some wheels up action. Enjoy the journey and the ride. 8)

Goinbroke2, apologies for the slow reply, factory cast iron 351 Windsor heads ported and the engine plate was duel bolt pattern.
Not 100% on the cam, 295 duration I think.

Why a 727, simply it came at the right price. It was already beefed up as it came out of a Customline. It was shortened to fit in the dragster and used a push button shifter.

You are on the money Roo, since 1966. This dragster belonged to John, the car I drive belongs to his brothers Joe & Jim.

Not my car, it is the car that got me pointed me in the right direction and buying my own. It belonged to one of the brothers that I currently drive for. Sorry Picture quality is not real great.

What brand is the barrel valve and at what point is pressure gauge plumbed in. Sounds like it is picking up a spike when you are coming off the throttle. Did your crew check it, zero it after the burnout.

An new 80A-1/2 should flow 5.2, a used 4.94. With those numbers I would have started with the 90 main as shipped or gone super safe with an 80 - 85 which should have been safe. No other bypass/pressure reliefs in the system?

Have you had the pump flowed, going by your info it is only flowing about 2.9 GPM but pressure no where near what you got.
Do you have a secondary (Idle) bypass fitted.

You did not mention what RPM you are turning or the conditions. With that set up my calculation show a touch over 200 psi @ 7000 and very rich. What were your plugs like on the previous 8.20's.

It was definitely a fun car, we would run 2-3 weekends a month and do nothing to the engine other than set tappets, spark plugs every month and change the oil every meet. 8)

We have not yet had a chance to check the pressure but I believe the one way has a 2 psi spring. Once fitted and the first start up completed it needed very little squirt bottle to fire up.
We have the shut off directly into the pump, then fitted the one way onto the end of the shut off. The one way has an o ring seal so it both holds fuel in the feed line to the BV and seal the pump from draining back. So far so good. Will be checking pressures in the coming weeks and will post when I have some numbers.

We had one of our Nostalgia meets today and trialed a check valve fitted to the output side of the shutoff going to the BV.
It worked a treat as is was much easier to start. :)

Calkins, It would be a wild ride with that Y block.

Flyer, With the Holden 10.98/127, with the Ford I did very few runs before selling 10.86/129. After I sold it I think it got down to 10.1 not sure on the speed. The Ford was a mates street car engine that we put the methanol fuel injection on. We flipped the engine plate and made a bellhousing, everything else was the same, 8 1/2" 3000 Stall convertor, glide. Very mild set up but it was just a fun car. 8)

Some pics after I sold it, seems each new owner likes to change the exhaust.
