Front Engine Dragsters / Re: FED bounce problem.
« on: June 21, 2020, 01:42:06 PM »
Our car would bounce if you got on brakes too hard--Ease down GENTLY on the brakes and ours was minimal--I had a 200 in car with torsion bar front--if we ran it out the back door or hit brakes hard and or rough track she would really scare you but we learned if bad get on power start all over again on slowdown and if we did run out of room just ride it out and pray--I had one run my dad was watching and it was a even match so I ran it out the back door to hard then ran out of room and Had to brake hard --it bounced so hard I smacked a place on my helmet--got lucky and did not wreck but taught us a lesson----You can practice like when you run 1/8th on a quarter length track --Brake hard get her to bouncing--get on power --start over--it is a good lesson to learn you car

Leave at much lower RPM like 2000-2500  Try that
When we left at high RPM on our car it would shake'em ( and your brain)
Sure it may not 60 ft like the higher RPM so who cares
Also whatever you can do so it does not dead hook
That all helped us a ton

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: welded reverse clutches?
« on: June 11, 2020, 04:21:17 AM »
Maybe wrong trans brake solonoid  they make ( in general) two different travel lengths--get the wrong one travel too short and well,, you fry the reverse--I did it  I actually made a plug was footbraking and it did not hold the thing IN far enough same result

You should not use that--it is poorly made--It was made to make noise for cruise in guys--not to put in a fine race engine--use a very high quality chain and gear set--Cloyes Hex-adjust is a fine piece and the Aussie sets have a premium german chain  the chain is the deal don't us one from India etc
good luck

I think you can run them until you retire--it is the threads in the block that you should keep an eye on during fresh ups--as long as studs go in block finger tight you will be fine -- If you torque them in--the block can and will crack--That ..is the secret to main studs
This opinion based on 30 years of building

I like talking with Mr Stroud--getting the exact right unit--the bag in a bag works perfect--you can pack one drunk after you watch their great Youtube video--I LOVED my Stroud after fighting a Simpson and the Stroud is clean looking pack  no gaudy labels etc clean and neat  You get the best tech advice from Stroud every time--world class outfit

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Cause of fretting on main caps?
« on: February 08, 2020, 04:37:07 AM »
Tune up
When timing too high etc or tune up is off there can be detonation--pre ignition etc
That is your culprit--back timing off some  Find out where the tune up issue is
I worked in engine shop for decades--even cross bolted hemis's etc will do it if timing too advanced etc
With correct tune up that goes to a minimum
Engines can run great ET's etc but are killing themselves half way down the track and you can't hear it
Plugs and main caps tell the tale

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: fresh engine test
« on: December 28, 2019, 01:27:53 PM »
We started using the lifter bore broach from Goodson machine supply--it is wonderful--most engine getthe lifer bores hurt on tear down--naturally the old lifter is mushroomed a small amount from wear--most folks yank them out the top--Pro builders always remove cam then push lifter out the bottom that way you don't scratch the lifter bore up
The ball broach is hammered through and then slide hammered back out this straightens the lifter bore and smooths it up
This process is a must when block has been shot blasted too ( always use WD40 or some similar on each bore as you do this)
Cheap tool that works miracles and as a bonus helps you find if a lifter bore is worn too much ( big trouble too )
We all know about oil with correct additives, spring pressures being right etc but many still ignore the lifter bores and then wind up blaming cam and lifters for failure
This process helped my shop avoid cam / lifter issues and cut failures to almost zero
The balls are available for all popular lifter diameters but also come as a kit with popular chevy ford and mopar
They are hard as Supermans knee cap and should last forever

If it is a flat tappet solid the answer is No
Initial start up and cam/lifter break in is Critical on any build
You will just increase the chances of grinding a lobe off
You need instant start up, full water flow, timing set instantly ( well advanced never ever too low--makes giant heat if too low) and let it run at about 2000-2300 RPM until it comes up to temp-let it cool--repeat about half dozen times to give the cam and lifters every chance possible--you should do all this with inner springs out to reduce pressure
If you do this and all of your lifter bores were perfect ( hopefully sized with a ball broach) your cam has a fighting chance
Good luck--do it right
I would break it in on test stand--

Altereds / Re: Wheelie bar length?
« on: November 03, 2019, 07:55:13 AM »
The "science class" answer is longer the better--and many here will tell you go long
but
my experience tells me 48 in is a Plenty--and I have a pal with very vintage leaf spring stupid looking 2 footers and the car will go 4.90's in the 1/8th
what we have learned is they must be centered --and by that I mean centered measuring from the brake rotor edge or best is the axle flange edge  and I mean dead on centered no slop is also big factor
truth is wheelie bars look awful on an FED  they just do but with modern tracks and tires you can't possibly drive one without  My 48 in single bottom double top bar worked fantastic and did not look silly like 6 ft does--I mean really??
keeping wheelie bar low seems to be the key to a good launch or at least it was with the three cars we played with
NO slop--flex is ok --keep that wheel axle center under 3 in to the ground and go get em
This is just an opinion

 SOLD IT THANKS!! Guys Look!
I buy every Frameworks shifter I can find--usually a few a year--as you know they are the lightest, best FED PG shifters ever made--Many of you run one--but guess what? You always have to use a BM or home made trans lever bracket with the WRONG geometry--it can be a royal PIA to make them work Correctly!!!
I scored this New Old Stock--not made since the 80's factory PG shift lever bracket in package with instructions etc never opened!! I should open and copy but I am not
Once in a lifetime chance to get one
$75 shipped free   hey copy and sell them and make some $$ not me I am retired and not interested
Yep that is high $ but to make that beautiful shifter you have work right this is the oddball piece you need
