Tow Vehicles / It is getting hot at races, poor time for A/C to fail
« on: August 16, 2018, 07:30:44 AM »
When we went to the race at Norwalk we had a number of systems that failed on the Motor Home. One was the Refrigerator (the gas fired side, the electric ran fine the whole weekend) and that has been fixed and a video produced on that.

Another failure was the step motor (again) that has been replaced and video produced.

We had the line between the transfer pump and the injector pump fail (it wore through due to a rub point on an old clamp (that was documented here).

Finial was the front A/C unit stopped producing cool air. The fan ran, and the compressor ran, but it produced no cool air (on a hot weekend, seem like more and more race weekends are HOT). We were fortunate that we have ceiling ducts. We closed the ones in the rear and left the ones in the front open. This pumped the cool air from the rear unit to the front ducts.

I could not find much information on the process of swapping out the A/C unit. On big question was how to get the unit off the roof and the new on the roof. I was reminded here of a video produced by Terry in his thread Total Rebuild on how he got his A/C unit up

As of today I have yet to speak with any A/C manufactures, left messages (fill out forms online but was never contacted). I ordered a Coleman A/C unit Mach 15 48204C866 as a guess and pretty much in the dark. I thought I had a model 7333C8864 which is a 13,500 BTA unit based on the documentation that came with the coach, wanted to upgrade to 15,000, the A/C unit.

There is very little guidance on the pieces and process needed to do the swap. There are suggestions that you need the A/C unit, a new control unit, and a new grill as the old ones are not supposed to fit. In my case I only needed the A/C unit, the old control model works fine and the grill did not need replacing, in fact had I ordered it, it would not have fit.

The unit I received looks identical to the unit I am replacing (compressor, condenser, plumbing, the old cover fits on the new unit), with a few exceptions. The mounting bolt holes are in a different location, old mounting bolts are 5/16 and the new ones are ¼ inch, the intake and exhaust ports are in the same location but slightly different shapes (I attribute these changes to change made to the unit over the years).

This long video is the process from the new unit sitting on the floor in the garage to testing the temperatures produced from the new unit.

This is my Bigfoot QT8K-16 Hydraulic Trailer Tongue jack unboxing, install, and review.

I purchased this (as there are other chooses) because the company is family owned and operated. All main components come from the Midwest region (USA Built).

It appears to perform it's function well, but...there could have been more attention paid to the design.

That being said what they did was take their RV leveling piston and convert it for use on the trailer tongue.

It has an 8,000 pound lift capability with a 16 inch travel of the piston.

Front Engine Dragsters / Cooling the engine between rounds

Fans yep.

I know you do not want to suck air through the valve covers due to fire hazard.

I want to blow into one side and have it come out the other, what do you use?

Jon's Wheel House / Tires for 7.0
« on: March 22, 2018, 08:01:50 PM »
Working on tires for a FED

Current set up is for 8.000 index,  top end RPM is 6,700 at 165 MPH on 31 X 12 X 15

New engine and desired index is 7.00 around 7,800 rpm engine is good for 7,500 to 8,000, would like to see 7,500

Rear gear is 3.73

Looks like a 33 inch tall tire would be around 193 MPH 6 -8 % slippage in the torque converter.

How much will the tire grow? Is this calculation correct with tire growth?

I purchased some headers off Fee-Bay to use on the dyno.

Dyno is now done and it is time to try and pass them on.

These are Hedman Hustler racing headers that fit Ram Air IV and Edelbrock heads. 1967 thru 1969 Firebird.
Engine Size: 6.6L/400, 6.9L/421, 7.0L/428, 7.5L/455

They were poorly represented on Fee-Bay as to their condition so I need to clean them up.

Prior to this video I had sand blasted them and painted them to make them more presentable, something I would allow to be bolted onto the engine.

This is the second pass at them to fix problems before I list them on Fee-Bay, here is the link to that project.

Wagler Competition Products Acquires Indiana’s Lyons Raceway Park
By Andrew Wolf

In an effort to bolster its research and developments efforts, diesel performance operation Wagler Competition Products announced on Monday that it has acquired Southern Indiana’s Lyons Raceway Park, an eighth-mile drag racing facility located in the rural countryside an hour and a half South of Indianapolis. Wagler Motorsports Park, as it has been renamed, will become a mixed-use venue with both public and private activities, while at the same time serving as a home base for Wagler’s new dyno-tuning arm, Critical Calibration Inc.

Jeremy Wagler, owner of Wagler Competition Products, founded the business in 2011 and since that time has delivered a host of innovative ideas to the diesel performance marketplace, and the opportunity to convert the Lyons strip into a private testing facility to prove those very ideas was one he’d been seeking for a number of years.

“We’ve been talking about it for a year, but we weren’t serious until recently,” Wagler says. “Over the holidays, we sat down and talked about it again. We were planning on putting in a pulling track, and Brent [Jones, former track owner] said, ‘why don’t you just buy it?’ I told him I’d love to. So we worked it out and signed the papers on Friday.”

Jeremy Wagler with Sean “FarmTruck” Whitley of ‘Street Outlaws’ fame.

The acquisition of the facility will provide Wagler with an unprecedented level of service for its customers along with its own research and development efforts, as the components made in-house at its Odon, Indiana operation can be privately tuned and dyno- and track-tested just 11 short miles to the North.

“We’ll have a new shop going in, hopefully by this spring or summer, and then we’ll have the chassis dyno and everything set up, because we’re going to start doing all of the custom tuning and everything up there, rather than here at our facility,” says Wagler.

While the facility will be available seven days a week for private drag racing and truck/tractor pulling testing, Wagler affirms that he’s committed to operating the drag strip for public use. The track will maintain the four race dates that were held under Jones’ leadership, including the Team 260 Neglection No Prep in May, the Wagler Diesel Competition and the No Box Nationals in June, and the Southeast Gassers Association meet in July, with plans to add future special events.

“We’ll be adding the pulling track and hopefully we can build the drag racing back up again. I think it’ll bring people in — it seems like a lot of people like the track. We will have it open for more than just this four events; because we’re new to this whole track thing, I don’t want to say we’re going to be open every week, because we don’t want to kill ourselves … we’re trying to run a business, too. But we’re working to get a schedule together. We have our Diesel versus Gas event in June and we’d like to do a fall one, as well, and we’re looking at possibly some no prep, radial, and grudge racing.”

Adding a high degree of validation to their efforts, Wagler has enlisted renowned track prep specialist Kurt Johnson of Total Venue Concepts to oversee the surface for events and testing.

In its statement, Wagler Competition Products noted, “Wagler Motorsports Park is the perfect venue for automotive industry manufacturers to come together and share data to push technology and efficiency forward. Wagler Competition Products works closely with many leading-edge companies like, EZ LYNK, S&S Diesel Motorsport, PSI Superchargers, Callies Performance Products, Comp Cams, RideTech, and many others. This recent addition to Wagler’s research and development capabilities stands to strengthen collaboration efforts for the common goal of better performance within the motorsports industry and better efficiency for the automotive industry.

“Pushing performance automotive technology forward requires skilled people who can implement and embrace the new technology being developed. WMP recognizes the need for fresh talent and is proud to partner with the Vincennes University College of Technology by offering educational opportunities to the next generation of motorsport professionals.”

Wagler adds, “the private testing is going to be a big focus for us, because the pulling truck guys, they don’t have anywhere to go. You can’t rent a place to test them, so they’re going to the actual events and doing testing in competition, which isn’t usually a good outcome.”

Drag Racing / Englishtown Raceway Abruptly Closes Its NHRA Drag Strip
« on: January 17, 2018, 02:28:53 PM »
For decades, Englishtown Raceway Park in New Jersey has been home to the NHRA’s Summer Nationals. But today, the track announced it’s stopping drag racing, effective immediately. Other activities at Englishtown will continue, notably Club Loose’s drift events, but this is an abrupt end to an era.

All quarter and eighth mile events are coming to an end, while dirt bike, karting, road course and drift events will continue. The reason for the closure of drag racing appears to come from the track leasing out that area to Insurance Auto Auctions to store cars. Englishtown previously held some of the thousands of cars flooded by Hurricane Sandy back in 2013, so this relationship isn’t coming out of nowhere.

A source familiar with the matter said that IAA recently came back and made an offer the track “couldn’t refuse.”

So the end of drag racing at Englishtown doesn’t seem to be coming from something falling through with the NHRA so much as car storage being more lucrative.

Tons of smaller drag events run at Englishtown (its Honda-only events are well known) and it’s unclear where they’ll go. There are other drag strips nearby, like Atco, but this is all quite sudden.

What’s interesting about this is it’s a real passing of the torch moment for this really quite well-known track, which was due to host the NHRA Summer Nationals again this year in June. A few years back, Englishtown moved its drifting events from a large parking lot to a dedicated road course, and the events have been flourishing. East Coast Bash might be the best drift event, if not the best car event, in the country.

That these drift events are continuing while drag racing is shutting down is an interesting gauge of the state of motorsports in America in 2018.
