Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / weight change before rebalance
« on: October 23, 2021, 10:22:25 AM »
How much weight change before you rebalance crank. New rods .020 shorter but heavier on small end. Big end almost same .By almost I mean less than 10g. Small end on other hand is 240g old rods 275g on new rods. My thought is I can probably get most of it off pistons or at least half of it. One reason I will be putting another set in later anyway. Probably heavier than ones in motor since .125" bigger Would rather do that than grind on new set of $1500 MGP rods. Guessing difference is billet rod just denser material and heavier. If matters its billet crank also. Motor will probably rarely see 8000 rpm and if so will be brief flash . New pistons might be a while since nobody has anything to make parts out off just like cam guys have no cores to grind. Unfreaking believable. Thanks Joe Idiot.

Piston, rings, pin and rod weigh 1955 total 35 more than old combo.  Pistons are not heavy but not lite. Thinking I can get maybe half that back there.Small end of rod shows biggest difference in two rods.  Ig can get 15 or so grams off then only about 15 to 20 off old and thats right at 1% ,which I would think would be non issue, might be wrong. Nobody local I would trust to balance this crank and KB doesn't do cranks anymore from my understanding. Plus KB was bought out few years back and another group running it.

Just remember when they become std issue. Who did it first. I have list of those items and never get credit.

My heads have 3/4" aluminum plates that are port matched and extend the ports and increase flow.Plan is to weld tubes to them, strap tubes togetehr and run strap bacl tp plate.Same design as a set of fuel car headers.

As long as I do not blow them off and run over them it is just experiment.Spent lot more trying something. Some worked out and some are on shelf.

huge portion of turbo guys are running aluminum piping, lot hotter. Heat coming out of exuast just came off top of a aluminum piston. I guess we are about to find out. Only about 125 of tubing and few hours with welder to see if works. If so its 14 lbs off car.

No problem. I tried being normal one day.Boringest day I ever had. LMAO

Nothing more fun than being told I can't do something I have already done.

Ok now I can rean post on page two but not one. Weird?   This is why I put  my motor at 49 1/2 out, well it wouldn't go the 52 Park's told me to put it at. LOL

Curly where is your motor and how much weight on front wheels when car is sitting normal .

Really think I would be better waiting to new cam gets here.Run clearances with it.Send pistons in motor to manufacture and have them build new ones to give me my minimum numbers using old o nes as rfeferance point. That way I can run numbers with the gasket I want and know exactly what I have.

I will give them a call. I use to run Ross(very heavy,Then Arias and Venolia.

I will need light piston because billet rods are quite a  bit heavier than my old delta 88 Brooks rods

CAlled J$E about a set. They did not seem to like idea of leaving lot of extra material in valve pockets so I could fly cut them after checking with cam so as to get right on minimum clearance and max compression. Every bit counts. If I can get as high as I want with .040 gasket I can always change in thicker gaskets if I want less.Figure that way I can always start with lower compression ans step up when running nitro

I donít think the Intake valve closing point should be left out of the static compression conversation.

Agree 1000%. To prove point.Knowing cam in my car is TOO big duration wise. I advanced it and ran CC check. 4* gasined 20 lbs,8* gained another 20 and last 2* gained 15 more lbs. es I checked piston to valve and had a ton left I need more material in valve pockets. I figure there is about a full point to be gained and or more lift. My plan is to get compression as high as can with thin gaskets and if need less compression I can add gasket..Loty easier than trying to build it. 2.45 cc's per .010 of gasket so going from .040 to .09 or .100 meas 12 plus cc change and that comes out to almost 2:1 and puts me same place I am at right now but with .125 larger bore with new piston and rings I ordered.

Our new 560" is 14.5 to 1 NA looking forward to what amount of Nitro it likes or doesn't like I guess.

Nope. No ground strap on these plugs. They are NGK bUE. Prock had avideo of them on JFR test stand and they looked like football fiel lights next to 75watt buld cmpared to ngk 1o plugs. Dropping cylin der because Anthony set BDK for wrong setting and car was too lean.Didn't burn anything. We figure to run BK pressure back up for extended time on topend. Been told its not lean but all indication say other wise. So if we keep pressure up and  then pull fuel on top and cylin der either lives longer or all the way we will know our idea is working. We have cpl old run data logs that Prock made up and had some low 5.20 runs, going back to those as much as weather and track will allow.

Called lil brother today. He is using having covid as excuse for not having them done. Told him was fine I wanted to reduce inside to 4.260 instead of 4.360.Not much but hey its free compression and little bit of power.
