Front Engine Dragsters / brake pedal location
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:58:17 PM »
I need to put in the brake pedals in the rail.
When the previous owner installed it, he moved the engine and trans forward 6 inches.
I moved the drivetrain back to where it should be and now the location for the wildwood floor mount wont go there because of the shifter cable.
I was thinking of a bracket on the floor and put in a reverse brake pedal mounted upside down. Put the master under the rear and run a rod to activate it.
Thoughts?
Thanks for the help from everyone!
Barry.

OK!. Update--------------
Have been working hard on the frame. redid the upper rails and put new uprights in the middle. added diagonals in between them. slid a PROPER sleeve in the upper rail and cut new pieces of tube to fit in between.
No way I was going to get the inner sleeve to slide in so I used a really thin zip disc from work to cut both new tubes in half. clamped them on and made a 1/16 gap all around for welding. there's 4 holes on each side for rosette welds. just waiting for my welder to get back in town.
Picture 2 is moving the cross member up and back as raising the motor and trans, the cross member hit it. cut a bracket for the steering box and weld on the tabs.
then pull it all apart when the welder get here lol.

Well I have the coupler cut and fit in. I was able to trim it to size and have enough space. slides in back and forth with ease.
Next up.
Larger trans and raised so now the steering cross member hits the trans. lol.
Will move the cross member back a little bit, raise it up slightly and make a new bracket for the box.

ok. update:
The good= I have the uprights in and the drive train level and straight. rear end welded up. just need to weld in the uprights fully and paint the rear.

The not so good=The next item is the front. I cut the top rail and it straightened out but in front of the engine upright was still bowed up. I cut the 3/4 upright further ahead and the bottom straightened out! The upright and side diagonal is all messed up. Will refit and make it square. Who ever welded this up before really shouldn't have tried! I'll get it fixed. Glad I'm a tuber/pipefitter lol.
Till next time.

A fellow at work welded up the bushings in the uprights and I tacked them in. next is the rear mounts.

Yesterday I fit up the 2 uprights. didn't have a notcher but had carbide bits.
Chopped the tube a little longer than I need, used the carbide bit to get close then used flap rolls for final fit up.
Worked good. now work on the diff mounts.

Well I have the uprights out an the mount areas cleaned up. Now just need the parts to show up and re install.
quick pic on the mount area and the 2 bent uprights.

I'll start putting progress here.
Yesterday I cut the mounts off of the rear end. There needs to be 4 bolt holes on each side. Only had 2 holes and they used 2 thin plates stitched together per side! maybe that's all they had? I have the diff all cleaned up.
Going to cut the uprights out as there bent. I ordered the same 1x2's from N&P. Should be an easy exchange.
Time to trim them out. Sneak up on it slowly to keep away from the upper and lower tubes

Barry.

I don't think so as there's no weight  on it. No motor etc.  She's stripped out.

Thanks for the tips. It was suggested to hilti  the front and back to the floor and Jack the center up and see if it comes back. I'll add the diagonal. If it doesn't ,  I'll redo where the crappy welds are in the middle. The pictures are with the driveline out.

ok cut the 4 tabs off and pulled the rear end. Going to by two new uprights with bushings.
There a little bent. N&P has them. Replace the rear mounting plates. should line up fine.
The only other issue I have is the frame is bent in the middle. I know.......Buyer beware. but Grapro and I think we should be able to cut and straighten it up. looks like they did a bad job of fitting it up. were thinking cut all 4, sleeve, and weld it up. jig it up to keep it flat and square. I'm guessing the bottom should be fairly flat..... here is a couple pics.
Thoughts?

then you only have to replace one piece and not the whole thing.
