Your Builds / Photo Gallery / Re: Glenn's dragster thread

Glenn, does Gateway create their ladder based on the different index classes ? Case in point, you qualified with a 8.02 on your 8.00 index, but if a 9.00 index car qualified with a 9.01, he would be higher up the ladder than you. Which is what NHRA does in Comp Elim. Also what ladder system are they using, in our series, NHRA Heritage JrFuel, we use a Pro ladder, ie 1 races 8 in a 8 car field, Sportsman ladder is more like 1 races 5 in a 8 car field, again Q times based on indexes .
I hope this helps clear-up what Gateway is doing with Pro Comp.

I posted allot of info on this subject, but it's not here ?
Most Heritage Jr Fuel teams have 7" converters, and most stall at 8300 to 8700, except Park's which stalls at 9200.
And yes we shift at 9500 to 10500, and cross finish line about the same.
But I'm sure that's not what you are looking for.
Maybe my post with tire, gear, converter, and motor combo recommendations will show up later.
Too bad. Just trying to help !

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Picking gear for FED
« on: April 09, 2014, 08:25:43 PM »
WideOpen, call Hoosier to see what the tire growth/ Dia will be at the speed you are shooting for, then go to www.csgnetwork.com/gearratcalc.html, and plug in the RPM, SPEED, and tire diameter, and it will give you a gear to run. Of course you can try different speeds, RPM's and tire sizes to get to the combo you are looking for.

Good Luck on your project,

So BK, you have never had to lift because your FED was headed for the wall or center-line ?
If so, I guess you don't need anymore weight.  How much do you think an extra 20 lbs would slow your car down ?
We added 20 lbs to our NHRA Heritage Jr Fuel car at a race because my tune-up gave us more power, only to have the driver lift because it was drifting.
Funny thing the car ran better ET's after we added the 20 lbs, and it went straight.
I know of a fast JrFuel team that carries about 80 lbs of lead on the front, but still set the A/ND record of 6.77.
Are you racing 8.60 or 8.50 brackets ?

Included is a picture of my mid 60's nitro Jr Fueler that I raced in the midwest for 5 years.

So BK, you added 10 lbs to the axle, so you can steer it ?

30dodgeboy,
I hope not to alarm you, but are you aware the very newest those Avon's could be is 35 years old. Once an Avon rep saw a SoCal dragster builder was using their light weight motorcycle/ moped tires on 200+mph dragsters they freaked and went back to England and destroyed the molds. I tried to buy the molds but got a big NO.
So look closely at your Avon's, look for cracks in the tread and sidewall, there is a good chance they are cracked, and hard.
I, Hayden Wheels, sell some Avon tires, but ONLY for show/ cackle cars, NOT for racing.  We do sell new Avon "looking" rib tires that are not old.

My Calif guy that does ceramic exhaust coating does not do powder coating. His ceramic coating does not take 5 days, they use an oven.
I have them do other items in the Hi-temp silver ceramic, like AC brackets for street rods, it looks like chrome, because they polish the parts after the ceramic coating.  Also they polish and use clear ceramic coating on Halibrand mag wheels so they don't turn green in the NHRA museum. I have even had them clear ceramic coat the hood ornament on my 48 Pontiac, instead of chrome.
I offer the clear coat on my front dragster wire wheels for those customers that want polished alum wheels, but don't want to have to any upkeep, just clean them like any painted item, ie spray detail wax. The clear coat is clear, not like some of shine goes away like with clear anodizing. The only way I can tell the diff between just polished, and clear ceramic, is the feel.

Altereds / Re: Head and Neck restraints, what are you using?
« on: March 12, 2014, 09:44:44 AM »
Hayden Wheels has just started selling a new neck support system. You can see the Leatt system on our web site Haydenent.com.
The Leatt company has been around for a long time making neck supports for motorcycle racers, but now makes a SFI approved system.
One of the features I like is it has a low back piece, our team's 1'st Hahns was high enough it got caught on the roll cage, also the Leatt has seat harness channels. And it weighs 2 lbs.
Anyway, just call me with any questions, 800-624-3803

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: Nitro Question.....
« on: March 01, 2014, 04:24:12 PM »
I mis-Spoke, an Oops from a guy that builds Spoke wheels, McKray runs size 18 nozzles in their combo, not 16's
Of course there are other parts of a race cars that make for a good combination; gears, converter, wheel sizes, shift points, launch rpm.
Let the motor work in the rpm range it wants to, that's the trick, listening to your motor, as to what it wants.

I'm real glad you like your wheels.

Our best ET was 6.99, and best speed was 189 mph with the combo listed. ie; 14 nozzles, 1/2 pump, 76 main, 125 lbs pressure.
Your Hi-Speed opening at 65 may be high [ ie fat] with the 16 nozzles. The 0 pump might be too small , that's why I said call Don at Hilborn, he runs a low pressure set-up. The quickest-fastest non-raised runner iron SBC alky Jr Fueler in the world is the McKray-Enriquez-Algire 406 ci , best ET that I remember is 7.14, with a -1 pump, .125 main jet, open hi-speed jet, opening at 49lbs with 16 nozzles. The hi-speed is open at the hit, keep in mind the hi-speed is a pressure regulator in this application. Blown nitro, a different story.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: Nitro Question.....

I assume your change to the smaller 14 nozzles is for running alky. I would think running 30% you would need more fuel/ bigger nozzles.
I would call Don Enriquez at Hilborn, he can be a big help on what you are trying to do. Also Spud can help.

Our all iron SBC NHRA Heritage Jr Fueler, burning only alky, running raised runner 23° iron heads currently using 14 nozzles, with a 1/2 Hilborn pump.  The main jet I run is mostly .76, and a .90 jet in the high speed, running 120 to 126 lb of fuel pressure, 2.36 to 2.40 fuel flow, depending on weather conditions, at 29-31° of MSD mag timing. Now I know non-raised runner 23° heads run more timing, like 36-38°.  BTW we, Hammer-Hansen-Hook, won the 2013 March Meet running that tune-up, running 7.02-7.04 @ 187-188 mph.
It looks like you are running alum heads and the timing may be different than iron heads. Just take a good look at the plugs looking for signs of detenation. Black or white speckles on the plugs, if you see that, back down on the timing or add more fuel pressure, or both.

To further confuse you, when I raced my 98% nitro high gear real Jr Fuel car in the mid to late 60's I ran 55° of timing with another 20° of advance in the Vertex, and a 110 Enderle pump [ a Top Fuel pump, at that time] . Our tune-up at that time was far-out, but I did run 192 mph in 1963, with an all iron 301 SBC , on 9" M&H's. Car weighted 980 lbs, no driver.

Good luck with your project.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Seat Pressure
« on: January 25, 2014, 11:19:41 PM »
We measure our closed spring pressure with the retainer, so we get the total spring pressure, just add the retainer thickness to your installed height.  Also your spring supplier should be able to give you open pressure once you give them your valve opening.
Bill, I don't know your motor combo, but we replace our 1 1/2" dia PAC springs when they test on the car at 329 lbs. 330 is min with my 10,000 rpm motor at .938 lift, on the RR 23° SBC , new they install at 400. One of the best changes we have made was when I switched to the 1 1/2" PAC springs, they are more expensive, but I don't have to change them nearly as often as the triple springs. Unless we have some other problem, I only replace 3-4 springs all season.
Bud's non raised runner 23° only ran 260 lb springs. Our Hemi needs 420-440 lbs new, bigger valves, and high 9,000 rpm.
Back in the day when I had a dual engine BBC Top Gas car, and we wanted to be one of the 1'st Top Gas cars to go 200 mph, we did run 202 when we installed weaker valve springs, no other change.
So, if you are not sure what springs to run, check with your cam grinder, and be sure to tell them 9400 max.

Bruce, that's a good idea, about pack or ship bearings differently , but I don't know how customs in Norway works.
I can tell you I sold a pair of wheels to Norway, but Peter Nygaard wanted the wheels fast so he paid $349 US for DHL Express 3 day.
Stuff I've sold/ shipped to UK costs $125-154, but again that's just USPS shipping not customs fees.
Bruce is also right about new wheels start at $750 a for complete pair, plus tires, and shipping.

I've been running Jesel Keyways for 6 years, broke only one when it was too rich and deluted the oil.
Bill what dia Keyway and what roller dia are you running when you broke one ? I've been running 400+ seat pressure, with the .937, and .850 roller Keyways
