Front Engine Dragsters / Aluminium Anglia Spindles
« on: April 08, 2015, 03:02:10 AM »
I found a pair of Strange anglia spindles at a swap meet which are aluminium and anodized.

I see Strange no longer sell these, they only offer the the 4130 anglia style and the Strange/Lamb/Camaro size adjustable height spindle for funny cars.

Any reason not to use these ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Nut protection.
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:11:21 AM »
I'm about to finish up fab on my digger and I'm still pondering whether to brace the axle case for an exploding ring gear.  My case is a Curries hot rod case, it must be 1/8in thick at least.  I'm running Pro Gears, Spool, iron case and 35 spline shafts and around 600bhp.  I know technically the chance of a ring gear exiting the case is minimal however, while I'm still doing the fab I was wondering whether to add something.  I'm thinking 1/4in steel strips welded on the inside of the case ? would welcome others thoughs ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Front Spindle Bearings
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:03:14 AM »
I have an issue with the hubs on my front wheels.  Basically the inner bearing seat machined into the hub for the bearing is not deep enough and I don't have room to run an oil seal.  The wheels are fully laced and assembled hence I'm reluctant to pull them apart to turn the seat deeper.  An option I'm considering is using a rubber sealed ball bearing for the inner.  Would there be any issues running a ball bearing inner and taper roller outer ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Seat Back ?
« on: December 01, 2014, 01:14:23 AM »
I have to make a new seat back and pan for my digger.  Currently the aluminium back support wraps around and ends level with the upright behind the axle, pretty standard design.  My chassis is narrow at 19" wide and I was thinking of making the seat back literally just wrapping around level with my shoulders.  This would give me a little more elbow room with a  suit on as the cockpit just became 3" wider, ie the diameter of the tubing.  I'm restrained by my harness and arm restraints and the fully body is a protective barrier between me and the rotating slick ? Can anybody see any issue with doing this ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Anglia spindles
« on: November 03, 2014, 03:55:22 AM »
I have new MW Anglia spindle.  The kingpin is a very tight fit in the axle boss, to the point it needs to be hammered in with a soft hammer and punched out.  I believe the bushes had been reamed when the axle was built, however I'm concerned the kingpin will mushroom getting beaten in and out during mock-up etc and axle boss will most likely need to be reamed after chroming.  What size reamer should I use for a MW Anglia spindle ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Seat Buckets / Pans
« on: October 08, 2014, 07:10:17 AM »
Anyone got suggestions on a seat bucket ?  My current set up is a 2mm aluminium base and 1mm seat back dzus'd and rolled over the top rail.   The seat "works" as is, however unless sitting bolt upright, it doesn't support my lower back.  It fits the car but is far from ergonomic ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Steering bellcrank / dogbone
« on: July 23, 2014, 03:01:17 PM »
I'm using a bellcrank set up to keep the steering link tight to the rails and proper ackerman.   The set up I have at the minute is basically a 1/4 plate bellcrank pivoting on a 7/16 bolt shank.  Now this would be fine for a soapbox but I kind of feel this needs to be better engineered.  What set ups are you guys running, do you have bearings ? what material ? any alternatives to using plate ?

Front Engine Dragsters / SBC Zoomies
« on: June 15, 2014, 01:45:45 PM »
I'm having  a hard time getting 2" tubes positioned properly on a Stahl flange.  I want short tubes, and tight turns but the centre ports are limiting the amount I can lay the tubes back, about 80 degrees is max.  Any advice on how to position the tubes, or which radius to use to get them raked back ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Fastner material and grades ?
« on: June 03, 2014, 03:39:12 AM »
On my previous cars I've used mostly Grade 8.8 BZP fastners and over time the corrode and go cloudy white.  I' intend to chrome all my axles and links and was wondering if stainless grades A2 or A4 are acceptable on higher load components such as motor plates, torsion bars, radius rods, steering links, rod end half nut and through bolts ?   Would I be better off using chromed steel nuts and bolts ? problem with these is they do not have markings ?
