Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Slowing down Transbrake
« on: January 31, 2020, 04:57:32 PM »
Dan,
I run classes were your not allowed a delay box.
I already have an older slower brake in the car but its still not slow enough.
Long through buttons help some but not enough and dont fit well in the cockpit.
I was wondering if you have tried or heard of leaving out reverse springs?
I know there is an odd number of springs.
Do you think it would create a problem cocking the reverse piston in the bore?

If this is for the track I'm not sure resplined axles will make it through tech.

Thank you for the direction. I had not checked the "Support" section of their website. $75.00 to respline the output shaft is quite reasonable. I'd be able to get the 8 3/4 Mopar axles done too for $125 for the pair. Doing it through one company would save a bit on shipping too. Seems another question/problem is solved! Thanks!

The first description. The shaft was never removed from the planetary. All the work was done at the tail end of the shaft.

"Sharty"  :o I need to proof read a bit better before I post. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure if I understand exactly what your friend did. Did he shorten the output by taking out a section between the planetary and the splined end? Or, did he remove the shaft from the planetary body and weld the cut off shaft back in? After reading your description several times it sounds like the first scenario, that he machined a "boss" on the planetary end of the shortened shaft and bored the splined end to  press fit it onto the "boss", and then welded it back together.

Sorry if I seem dense, I feel I understand things better if I can put them in my own words to double-check my understanding.

Lynn

BTW...I was able to correct my typo in the subject line of my posts. I thought it would have changed it for the entire thread title, but it didn't.

A friend of mine cut one down. He cut the spline off, cut the shaft off, turned the shaft down, bored out the splined end and pressed it on the shorter shaft. welded the pressed on splines and made mid 8 second passes in a home built dragster for years.
P.S. his was a Shorty. A Sharty is something completely different.

I have a friend that uses the ball and socket from a trailer sway bar on his push bar.

Blown 7.0 car with the trans off the motor plate only. wind up having to build a new plate every 8 years from flexing, no big deal
What were the 60' times?

Can you get a socket on the bolt?
If you can and the bolt is long enough would the flange on the bolt remove the spacer as you back the bolt out?

How will that work if its just a bolt and washer, and not a specialty large-flanged bolt???
First sentence of his post said large flanged bolt.

I didn't have any support behind the engine and depended on the motor plates only in a mid 8 sec. car. Ended up with a broken mid plate. The coupler got shoved into the back of the transmission taking out the case.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: electric primer pump ?
« on: November 12, 2019, 04:21:32 PM »
I have cpl cheap NOS solenoids laying around I could use.Problem is they draw  butt load of juice and will probably need a relay to keep fuses in . A few have said they use them thru whole system  and fill it plu open 3 way to prime mechanical pump. Does not look like it would work very well in front of BV,maybe wrong there. Cpl said they use check valve with about 1 lb to open and once mechanical pressurizes it shuts valve. Seems suction could still pull fuel from Primer when shutting fuel off. Maybe going thru distribution block will reduce ability for it to pull. Looking for low draw solenoid that will only open when pump is on.
I'm not sure what my soleniod draws. But its only energized when the primer pump is on.
You have to be careful of a back flow and leaning out if you plumb to the barrel valve. Thats how mine is set up and I think you get better fuel distribution.

Spud,
 Or anyone that knows.
I have a primer pump plumbed into my distribution block.
I'm using a nitrous solenoid to stop back flow to pump
I tried a primer valve but wasn't sure it was holding
I have the primer pump plumbed to the in port on the solenoid but I wonder if it should be reversed because the higher pressure is from the distribution block.

I think you are right.
I had similar problem were vacuum would drain the primer tank going down the track.
I put a nitrous solenoid in line problem solved.
I switched to priming into the distribution block and was getting on line to ask a question about that.
Interesting timing.

Another thought. It looks like you have front suspension.
Limiting the travel or even locking it up will help.
The lower you can get the front the better.

You didnt mention what you have for a transmission or rear gear.
If you have a 3 speed a Powerglide can help.
If you have a lot of gear a lower ratio can help also.

Sounds like you could try lowering the front. Paragraph 3.
Also moving or adding weight to the front.
