Front Engine Dragsters / Re: best nostalgia event for holiday.

I don't know if it meets your goals of meeting veteran drivers, but having been to a number of CHRRs and March Meets, hands down the most fun I've ever had at a nostalgia meet was at the Meltdown Drags in Byron, Ill last July. They do their best to recreate 1966. Here's video of the gassers from last year:

Front Engine Dragsters / Enderle Fuel Filter with shutoff - pros/cons?
« on: March 09, 2015, 12:32:28 PM »
I'm in the process of getting the remaining pieces I need for my injection set up. I've mentioned this before, but the dragster I'm building is more for my own enjoyment rather than to be really competitive - the goal has always been to try to build something as close as possible to period while still meeting the safety requirements. I was looking on the alkydigger site, and noticed that Enderle still makes two of the old style fuel filters - one with a shut off vale, and one without. If I get the one with the shutoff valve, I'm assuming it would be used in lieu of a shut off on the pump.

Is there a downside to using this set up and having the shut off on the feed side of the pump rather than the pressure side? Or would this filter actually be mounted on the pressure side of the pump?

Thanks!

125" Wheelbase:

140" wheelbase

140" wheelbase

It looks like it can be done, it just depends on what you want to do with the car, and how bad you want it.

Voxnut your car is a Beauty!! Is that a King Chassis?

Thanks! Yes, it's a King Chassis that I asked Brian to tweak some specs for me on. Looking forward to finishing it sooner than later. Your car looks like a ton of fun!

Here's mine- 135" wheelbase, 327 Chevy, forged crank, pink rods, 11:1 pistons, 305 heads with port and bowl work done, Schneider 299F cam, 1966 2 1/16" Hilborn injectors, 150 pump, shorty powerglide, no trans brake, Chrysler 8 3/4 with 3.73 gears on a spool, Willwood brakes. Not done yet, but hope to run mid 9's in the 1/4 mile. Chassis is certed to 7.50, but I don't see me ever getting close to that. I hope to have it track ready by the end of next year.

Wanted to buy / WTB used, but clean complete chute setup

Looking for a used, but usable chute for my dragster project. Building an injected dragster that has the 1963 look as close as possible, but meeting current safety standards in order to make runs. Because of this, would prefer silver bag for period 60's look, but black bag works as well. Deist, Simpson, or Chute Metal A+.

Thanks,
Dean

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Rules on the seat pan in an FED?

My car is 135" wheelbase, all new tubing, and in order to give the front hoop a period layback, I had Brian add 4" behind the rear axle- which is what is putting my legs in the position they are with the seat pan flush against the chassis uprights. Over the weekend I replaced the tube under the seat pan with flat bar stock, flush with the bottom frame rail and cut the bottom of the seat out, since the pan protruded lower than the frame rail.

There is plenty of headroom, so the seat pan will end up being about 2" higher, and then I'll move the bottom of the seat 4" forward to put my legs in the correct position. With my car, I still think having the shoulder hoop farther back, gives my torso the extra room and getting in and out should still be pretty easy. I can "hook" the back of my arms on the front of the cage and lift myself out enough to just put my feet on the axle to get out. Granted, I haven't done this with a full suit on yet (I don't have one) so we'll see as I go. I'll post a cockpit shot once I get it sorted, but here's a couple shots of the car itself under construction.

p.s. Bruce- bitchin' car! Is this the one you told me you guys got bored with?

Perfect! Thanks for the speedy reply. Will weld dzus tabs on the bottom frame rail to secure the lower portion of the seat.

Thanks again,

Front Engine Dragsters / Rules on the seat pan in an FED?
« on: February 18, 2014, 09:23:48 AM »
Hi All-

I was wondering if there are any rules that state the seat pan needs to be mounted completely flush with the frame rails? The reason I ask is because with the layout of my dragster, my calves rest on the axle, rather than the crook of my knee, which complicates mounting pedals. What I was hoping to do is move the seat bottom forward 4 inches. This would put me in a slightly more reclining position, but my legs would line up correctly. The top of the seat would still be flush to the top rail, and the bottom would still be flush to the bottom rail at the sides, just not the rear.

If this is not allowed, then perhaps I can build an aluminum insert welded inside the seat pan that will accomplish the same thing.

Thanks for your time,
Dean

I just bought a used, but clean long powerglide from a Super Comp racer. I originally thought converting it to a shorty (which is what I need) would be straightforward and not particularly expensive, but it's more than I thought. Would be happy to trade this trans for the short version I need. Another option would be to trade the full length planetary/output shaft and tail housing for a short one. I'm in Sacramento, CA.

Thanks,
