So where are running fuel filter if running one. Before or after pump Two trains of thought, Before pump saves pump from dmage from trash.Also could kill pump if filter plugged,which should not happen with proper maintenance . After pump will keep from starving pump and catch anything that would plug nozzles,but will let trash thru pump. Then there should not be anything other than fuel contamination if fuel is filtered to jug then to tank,unless vent line sucks in dirt on crappy return roads if driven back.
all of above are why I have pressure sensor at pump.Low means restriction and high means something stopped up. Well generally speaking.LOL

Before pump, period. If theres enough crap moving to plug the filter and lead to pump failure, imagine that crap going into pump first? So in my opinion that second theory is just that, theory. And a weak one. Pump dies anyways.

Consider this as a "generally speaking" comment about pumps. Most pumps push a whole lot better than they pull so I would place the fuel filter after any pump. There are pumps that pull vacuum quite well, but I don't think that's typical of something like a fuel pump. Exceptions to my "generally speaking" comment would dirt track cars; late models, modifieds and the like. But, in those cases the environment during refueling is quite dirty since we're talking dirt track. But, to minimize restriction on the "pull" side of the pump the filter is very often a stainless steel screen about 8" - 10" long and at least 1 1/4" diameter.
Not saying I'm right, but that's my $0.02.

I have mine before the pump.
I did learn that 40 micron is way too fine of a filter.
I think its around 100 micron now.
Clean it a couple time a year and my funnel also has a screen in it.

I've got a dirt style filter it takes up alot of space in a short wheelbase altered but I didn't like the small in-line filters

What type of fuel cell do you have (i.e. aluminum, composite, plastic) and how often do you clean it out?
The reason I ask is you may want to filter the fuel going into the tank and forgo the line filter altogether. JAZ Products make a 60 micron filter that fits their funnel. Just need to whipe out you fuel cell once in awhile.

I have a FIE filter with ss ends will have to check micron number. I do filter from barrel to jug and jug to tank. Thing is I run a dual system with very small nozzles in hat and smaller than normal in ports and it takes very little to be issue. I could do normal 8 nozzle system, but that just wouldn't be me. Talking .019 and .020 in hat and .028 and .030 in ports. Average is same as 8 .036's. Pressure should be around 150 with correct main in it. I like after pump better than before. Reason After 35 years of making living setting water and air flow in large building I have any restriction on suction side of pump is never good. Same time I have had too many pumps go bad because of very minor scratches in housing or end plate, granite most end plate issue are from vane rubbing. Plus mounting filter between pump and BV looks like crap,yea not best reason but it does.

you should always use a filter when dumping any fuel from a jug just to be safe!

I use a -20 filter before the pump, remember, when the fuel is being sucked into the pump, the vent line(s) are sucking in air for the displaced fuel so the tank is getting air, how clean the air is depends on where your vent is.
