denverflatheader is most likely right, bad pan design,oil level to close to the crankshaft,or lack of oil control and if oil drains back from the top end and you have a good windage tray and oil pick-up placement and design. I've had problems with pans in the past.

I,ve run various powerglides with modulator vacuum disconnected  never had a problem, always sharper up shifts when using stock valve body I've broken stock band and incurred wear on the drum(not flat . you only learn by doing!

I used TCI servo like I stated in another post checked band adjustment about every six runs other than that, I didn't have many problems

 tcoupekyle IS RIGHT! You should feel the convertor i have used 9.5, 8 , and 7" convertors and you feel the engagement if it's too tight you can't get a proper idle

without being there it's hard to analyse, type f trans fluid is what you should use.clutch clearance should be on the loose side. band adjustment is very important every 6 runs.should feel 1st engage just as you would a street car

 I called hoosier and talked to a tech we ran 33x10.5 on 12" rims only had a injected alky 406sbc  worked well, even on not very well preped owtlaw tracks

since the late 60's I've always primed the oil system either removing the dist. and using a mechanical adapter and drill or air over oil system that way you don't have any moving parts that might be dry.

nice going! there are no silly question you just have to filter the answers. you should not have any problems looks similar to our car the first time out. make sure you purge the air out of the cooling system, it has to be vented at the intake any time the rad is lower than the intake.
