It's been sitting in this garage for almost 40 years.

I need to find out who built this. The owner said the roll bar and seat were covered by Tony Nancy ?
-
Jeff from the first picture it looks to be Tony's mark in the middle.
When you get the car in your possession take a bunch of pictures of it and we'll try to get some history on the car.
Always good to save "History".
-
Tony I have some other pics I took Sunday. There is so much junk around it. I don't want to cut it up if its a known car. I bought it to make a competition coupe.

Building a Comp Coupe ? good to hear, But like you I'd hate to cut up a car with some history, Had a Nancy interior in one of my old cars , thats his mark on the seat cover,, Tim Jones
-
Looks like a neat piece of history. You might want to check the chassis as to current legality. You may find that won't meet any current safety specs. It might be worth more to someone interested in restoring it than what you can salvage from it for your build.
Just my 2 cents. George
-
Jeff could you send me the pictures you have of the car? Send them and any info you have to jesupercat@yahoo.com
Are there any tags or markings besides the Tony Nancy upholstery. Also what engine if any is with it?
I'll try to help if I can.
John
-
Is there an SFI tag on it somewhere? If so what number on it.
-
I will look for it on Sunday when I pick it up
-
The deal on the dragster almost didn't happen. But he called Saturday afternoon and we are going thru with it.. Now I might pick it up Monday if he gets out of work early, or defiantly Tuesday.

I got home and it was dark by the time I unloaded it. Will remove engine and tranny tomorrow and roll out side and take some better pics

This looks like it will be a build!
I feel your excitement.
You should turn this into you build thread, from purchase to first trip down the track.
If you would like I will move it to the build category?
-
Sounds like a plan. Go for it thanks Glenn

Looks like the original motor plat attached here

Took some sand paper to cowl and this was under the last paint job. Car seems to have had a candy red paint job before

Jeff can you send me the latest pictures you have and a paragraph of info regarding what you know of the history,(location of the car past owner,s)
I will pass it along to my senior friends and see what we can find.
jesupercat@yahoo.com
I like the past paint job.

The art work sure is a unique.

Death Dealer is an iconic 1973 fantasy painting by Frank Frazetta. It depicts a menacing armor-clad warrior with a horned helmet, whose facial features are obscured by shadow, atop a horse, holding a bloody axe and shield. Wikipedia
The car went by the name death dealer before the guy I bought it from. I'm trying to find out who owned it in the 70's. then they can tell me who they got it from.
Is a slow proses, and I want to thank the guys on this site for helping to find its history.
-
Supercat did you get pics??
-
Any I'd on the chassis builder?
-
Jeff yes I did. I am working on getting all the photos together and I should be able to relay 1 email with all the pictures and info to a good group of Historians tomorrow or Saturday AM.
I am just about done with our Fed. We should be able to fire on Saturday and possibly go to Las Vegas on Sunday.
We'll have the car in Bowling Green in 11 days, can't wait.......
-
John good luck with that fine looking dragster this weekend. And thanks for your help.
Any I'd on the chassis builder?
i haven't found any tags on the chassis I'm stripping the paint off it now hopping to find any stamping on it. Someone spent some time painting the frame, gold base coat with candy red for final coat.
-
Trying to find names on body work by wet sanding. Found the name of the car..
-
....
-
no Death Dealer here http://wdifl.com/carnames.html
-
I think it was a local bracket type dragster name. I wish I could find a persons name. The name Mack is painted on the inside of a side panel.
I hope a local photographer named Bill Truby has a pic of it. He has a lot of old photos from keystone dragway and another old drag strip in bridgeville pa.
-
Is there any other paint under the "Death Dealer" stuff?
-
That's my next step. From the look of the paint it has a candy red with I imagine is a really nice gold base. I can't figure out the color that the name and the horse are painted on.
The gold base would have looked good all by its self.
-
Woody or SPE car?
-
That's what I'm trying to find out.
-
I have been told by a pretty reliable source that its a 1966-67 Woody Gilmore Flex car. Other than brackets that have been welded on he told me its unmolested :D
Thanks to all that helped me identify who made it. And thanks to Paladin AA/FA for posting pics on another site.
Now to find the history of it
Thanks
Jeff
-
Well you're half way there.
-
Only half way :P
-
There couldn't of been that many Woody flexi cars built so that narrows it down a bunch.
-
Pete gave me a lead and its a speed shop near Philly that I have been to. I will contact them Tuesday. Or fly out to work a day early and go to the shop. He thinks it could have been theirs.
-
I ordered 2 old mags from Amazon and eBay 1965 CARS mag and a 1967 Hotrod mag, with articles on Woody Gilmore and his dragster frames. Looking and reading thru them Today I am now 100% sure what I have. In one pic the parachute brackets were identical to mine, on the Jerry Ruth top fuel car pics it shows the throttle mount and is exactly like mine.
It also calls "Ruth" car a Dial-A-Bite car. Which is the same as mine..
I'm still looking for who owned it in the early 70's and the find out who he got it from.. If that dose not work I might enter it in our local world of wheels car show with a sign asking if anyone recognizes it.
-
This is from Dragzine;
"Ruth, like so many others of the era, began his racing career at a young age, racing various gas coupes and sedans along with his late brother, John, in the late 1950′s and early 1960′s in their native Washington state. In 1963, with the bug to go faster, Jerry purchased a Chevy gas dragster from the Bier brothers of southern California and campaigned it in the A/GD ranks before experimenting with nitro later that season. In early 1964, Ruth teamed up with Danny and David Higgins and purchased a Woody Gilmore-built Top Fueler that present day NHRA chief starter Rick Stewart had piloted to a number of race victories. The wins soon came, as did a series of Gilmore-built cars and later several constructed by Don Long."
Both Ruth and Rick Stewart are still around. You might want to give them a call.

Here's a Draglist article about Ruth. Lots old photos and says Ruth is still looking for his Woody Gilmore car. Maybe you have it??????
-
Ruth said it was his favorite car.
-
That would be amazing.
-
Because of the wheelie bar on the Ruth car I have eliminated it as being mine.
But I have learned that there were 2 woody cars in mid 60's. I have sent them my pics. Now it's a wait and see.
-
From Cars1965
-
Check out throttle bracket on Ruth car 1967 Hotrod mag and the one one mine.. Exact thing.
-
I am learning a lot about these cars.
-

Maybe it was removed or changed over the years?
-
Let us know when you have an answer.
-
You know I will..
I thought I had a good lead from a local racer at the time.. But he said it wasn't his car. His name is Dave Wholey and he owned the Wholey & Starr AA/FD around 1967. He said he hated the woody push bar and cut his off and made something different.
Ill keep on looking
-
Well keep us in the mix if you find the history.
-
It's been awhile and I have been going nuts looking at pics and videos of front engine dragsters. :o I appreciate the help that I have been getting from this site. One of the things I have been searching is the steering wheel in my car. Bruce sent me a pic of a car with one and mike Roth said he restored a car with the same. I just watched a video remembering US30 and a FED also had the same BUT it was filmed in 1964. So it seems like an older steering wheel. Not a lot like it though.
I am putting my Woody in the world of wheels car show on jan 24-26 and see if anyone remembers it in the 1970's. I removed a lot of paint off the seat and found a dark blue paint job. Could be the original color as it had 3 other colors on top of it..
Thanks again to all that are helping me find its history.
-
Great, thanks for the updated information.
-
Is there any other paint under the "Death Dealer" stuff?
I used stripper on seat and left panel between wheel and frame. Removed the blue spray can paint then went to candy red with gold flake base. Next was a white paint. Under that it was black. The seats first coat seems to have been a dark blue.
After the car show next weekend I will see what's under the cowl and side panels.
-
My steering wheel looks the same. Don't know a lot about my car but is mid 60's and came from Illinois. Appeared to be original? to the car.
Mark S
-
That is really nice, I like it.
-
Mark we have the same steering wheel. But what I have been told Woody Gilmore used his own wheel. They are not real common.
-
I think the green is what gets your attention Glenn!
-
I think the green is what gets your attention Glenn!
It does, but I really like the design of the steering wheel.
-
Are your handles held on with rivets ?? Mine have screws.
-
They are held with screws like yours, mine are stainless now. I hate rust.
-
Hi Jeff, anything new on the dragster?
-
I found a name on the small block Chevy that was in the car.. It said built by Toad Hall. Stamped on block.
It's a good lead if I can find the Toad. lol
No info from the car show.
After 3 weeks waiting for weather to warm up I took car out of trailer. On a snowy day lol
-
My new friend Keith Brednich owner of the Atlas oil and tool dragster from Pittsburgh Pa has got me started on my Woody restoration.
-
I've watched the Atlas restoration on YouTube. What an awesome looking car.
-
I can't wait to see it in person.

Ya history is fun.
-
This is what I have cut off that didn't belong on car.

More

Some used pipe not tubing at one time
-
Right side bottom frame almost done
-
Bought a 8.75 rear end this week. This has no rust for a north east piece.
-
What's the plan, cackle car? Looks like there's a bunch of work ahead of you.
-
That's the plan for now..
-
The next step
-
Bought a cast timing chain cover and .250 6061 aluminum plate for mid eng mount. Also set block between rails for fitting and checking for front mounts. Engine has to slide back about 5/8" to meet mid plate. This would bring back eng block mount to the middle of the Woody installed sadals . Nobody ever used it.
-
Another pic
-
That's crazy.
-
xxxx those cyl heads are heavy :o
-
I got a great find. Complete set up should arrive next week. Need to find more parts.
-
Nice find
-
I'm impressed.
-
Thanks... I found the can setup on Facebook. Nobody responded to his post for what it was worth. It has as you see a flywheel and 2 discs and floater that's not seen. No pressure plate. Maybe he will find it.
This is going better than I thought so far.
Next is rearend narrowed and mount the complete drive train.
-
Great find JeffV8! Very curious to hear if you are able to complete the history... you just have to. Reading this, and with no finish, is like ripping the ten last pages out of a good book.
Im following this thread till you find out and the car is finished ;)
-
Gasserx I'm still looking for the owners. Sometimes I think I have a good lead but come up empty. Trying to get some pics in magazines.
I will keep updating with my progress.
-
After 1 year of picking up my Woody and as much time searching its history, I found out who owned the car before the guy I got it from. ;D. Also the name of the painter. Now I need to find the guy who owned it from Youngstown Oh. The Glory Days Of Drag Racing on FB was a great help.
Getting closer
-
Jeff I have a Hilborn blower injector that was shipped to Youngstown Ohio. by Hilborn records, to a Jacks Custom Auto, For a Chrysler on Nitro. 1964.
-
Thanks for the lead Van. I will check it out.
-
There could not have been too many fuel dragsters in Youngstown, Ohio in 1964. That injector Van has is a bitchin Laguna lean out deal.
-
Here is the only pic of my car from 1978 at Quaker City Dragway in Salem Ohio.
-
Looks better with the Elephant in the chassis.
-
lol yes it does
-
If its Tony's stuff look at the interior or other little details. The seahorse should be some where. no one did interiors like him. Good save .
LMD
-
Wish i had a pic of mine from 1978....! Thats awesome. Sadly I am completly lost with mine. Last thing i found out was that the owner from 1988-94 seems to have never ran it, didnt remember much about it, and now seems to have dissapeared from the earth.. or hiding somewhere :o
Did you find out anything about that injector thingy/Jacks Custom Auto?
-
It took me almost 1 year to the day I got my car for the info I have now. Now looking for the other pieces of the puzzle.
So far I can't come up with any info on Jacks custom auto. I do have a friend from Youngstown Ohio that is looking for me.
-
I ordered my American Rebel Mfg wheels today. Champ wheels 16-11 and 1200-16 M&H tires. ;D
Waiting for a call to get some work done on my car at the end of the month.
-
I bought my Woody some Christmas presents.
-
NICE 8)
-
Good looking wheels!
-
Thanks. I was told they used a real Halibrand 16x11 for the mold
-
Thanks. I was told they used a real Halibrand 16x11 for the mold
Good to know... how did you like fit and finishing in general?
( hey Santa, I hope you're reading this... )
-
Damm, those we're cheap. Nice wheels
-
Nice looking wheels for sure. who are they made by? Are they Sfi approved. I am looking for a set and interested in the look.
-
They are made by American Rebel Mfg. Champ wheel.
-
Thanks. I was told they used a real Halibrand 16x11 for the mold
Good to know... how did you like fit and finishing in general?
( hey Santa, I hope you're reading this... )
The finish is great. Haven't mounted ant tires on them yet. I saw a 33 Whillys gasser with them on and he was racing the car.
-
Nice... thank you Jeff.
-
Not much done on my car.. Waiting for Rooman to call me and I can bring my frame out to him to do some work on it.
After some tire issues from Coker tire I got my fresh tires from MandH tire great place to do business with.
-
If you are not going to use those wheels and tires for awhile , get some of those large vacuum bags to store them in, sucking the air and moisture out will keep the polish looking fresh for a long time.
-
Left my house at 7am Tuesday to bring my car for some work to MR2 performance. Mike Roths shop in Indiana. Got home at 12:10 am. 800 mile round trip. Can't wait to get it back.
-
Can I have the 2 X 4's. quite a structure. :)
-
You can have them after I pick up my baby ;D
-
It took 1 week for Mike Roth to find the history on my car. It's the 1965/66 Ewell Bell Olson car. Thanks Mike
-
Bitchin', that's how a digger is supposed to look.
-
Lots of history there.
-
After a 1 long month of soul searching I sold my Woody Gilmore car to Mike Roth. :-[ He will restore it to its proper Glory.
This closes one chapter but opens a new one. I bought a 1962 Falcon gasser. A car that I can sit in and drive lol
-
Building is fun, driving is fun, I'm not sure which I enjoy most.
One of the reasons I'm think of selling the dragster is so I can start working on my 49 Chevy gasser. It has been sitting for five years now.
