Started the 40 Coupe 5 years ago.  Got distracted with racing.  2016 New Years resolution is to work on it and complete it within a few years.  Intent is for a street legal 1200 HP.

A little late responding.  For future referance.  Obviously, the basics must be checked first.  Caster/camber, wheel bearings etc for correctness/mechanical condition.  However, I had this same problem with my Altered after changing from a rack and pinion to a Funny Car steering box  Bottom line, it came down to adding a S&W Racing Funny Car steering stabilizer.  Never had a problem since.

Altereds / Re: What did you do on your Altered TODAY?

I have the motor apart checking the bearings and oil pump for metal shavings.  I had the #4 rocker work lose and destroyed the lifters, rockers, and pushrods.  The metal shavings/pieces were found in the oil pan.

Agree that toe should be 1/6 to 1/8 max. Since I have a short wheel base Altered (116 inch) I have the same problem with loading.  The solution is to reduce th angle of the ramp with extensions or lay down some boards on the existing ramp.  I put 2x12 boards under both tires the  length of the ramp.  Problem was solved.

I agree with starting at 6lbs and working from there.  I spent a lot of runs figuring tire pressure for my altered. All in all, I ended back at 6 lbs.  In fact, I staggered air pressure at one time. 6.0 on left and 6.5 on right.   I hear its not uncommon depending on tire roll out and launch charicteristics. Its really a trial an error event to see what the car likes.

Not so good news. Was getting the car ready for T&T.  Lost oil pressure.  Checked the oil and found metal.  Looks like ill be missing a few races.  Update will have to come later.

Thanks for everybod's input.  In particular, thanks to S&W Racing.  We spent a lot of their time discussing this issue.  Their input and willingness to help goes above and beyond.  A top notch, truly professional orgonization.  Bottom line, is we discovered our pitman arm was too long.  Secondly, we added a steering stabilizer and moved the location of the steering box.  Although we have not done a test and tune, I will make a few passes this weekend before Coastal Plains has their big race.  Ill keep everybody posted on the results.  Again, thank you.

Had two issues.  Too many joints in the steering shaft causing excessive play.  Secondly, the rack would always oversteer when I made a correction.

Just changed my Altered steering from a rack and pinion to a Strange Altered box and Mark Williams steering setup kit.  The car is a 116 inch wheel base with 10 degrees caster, zero camber and 1/8 toe.  Took the car to the track and immediately had a violant front wheel wobble.  Never had it with the rack.  Any thoughts on where to look for the problem?
