Roo Man's Room / Oil breather tubes on rear of cage
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:42:01 PM »
Hi guys, got a few questions.
On feds that have oil breathers on the back of the car, and the chassis top tube is used to carry the fumes to the rear.. What considerations are done when the vent-tubes are fitted on the chassis? Is the area doubled and then the hole cut? Is there a formula for area doubled v's tube diameters?

Thanks for clarifying D.

I want to use the top tube, so I guess I can just put the chassis drain way up front somewhere, and not worry about closing it off.

I have been covered in oil before from the breathers when blowing up, It is not so much trouble in the sand, but on the dragstrip I have to contain it better.
I will vent from the valve covers, the video just goes in depth on what goes on when a piston lets go, and the necessities of sufficient tube diameters.
Its a precaution more than anything, as I have a bad habit of  blowing stuff up...

I want to locate the puke tank on the back of the car.

Running the oil/steam impregnated air in the upper frame rails to the back end of the car, does the chassis need regular draining or does the g-force completely take care of that?

I'd guess the frontend should be sealed off or should I use that also for added cc?

Heres a video from Jim Murphy's garage on the subject:

This is on my "to do list"  8)

I have heard you should clock the crankshafts 22.5° apart, so the rear crank only endures one powerstroke at a time.

i have also gathered that its not hp+hp, but more like hp+hp x 0.75.

For scientific facts, I've got nothing.

One of my top priorities when designing my interior was not to get hurt when things go wrong.

Severe tire shake and/or less than perfect track conditions can slam your feet around with such force you can cut or bruise your limbs, not to mention crashing the car.

I have a small console between my legs made from sheet aluminum, and I welded 1.5 inch sides on it to give my feet a little cushion.

My switches and starter button are on the left hand side, Dzuz fastened for easy removal and servicing. the empty hole left in the panel under steering wheel contained the shift light at first but now has a temp gauge sitting there. I have no tach and the oil press gauge is on the engine block beside the ignition. shift light is on the back of the carb.

Gassers / Volvo gasser ???
« on: April 26, 2013, 05:19:29 PM »
Would love to get my hands on another chassis and build a real gasser..

Here's our Volvo pv544 64'. probably would have to slow it down a bit with the I beam front.

I cant embed the video, so you'll just have to click the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bb-kristinsson/7229942710/

In the fastest classes, every other run during eliminations, every run during the finals.

We have so few built drag cars over here that we run up to three times to declare a winner for each round.
the surface is different for each track and gets different treatment, pictured above is the track in Akureyri which is very loose and lightweight dirt/small-chipped gravel track. Its the only purpose built sand drag track in Iceland.

All our other tracks are on the beach near the ocean. Our beaches contain really heavy medium grit black volcanic sand like this :

Trouble with the beaches here is the enormous tides, the sea level changes rapidly.
Here's our friend testing his 632ci monster on one of the beaches:

Awesome RJ,
I'm all for the new generation engines in nostalgic chassis. That Ford looks huge!

:)Nice hotrod! How do ya pronounce the name of that track? 8)

 Thanks dude,

Pronunciation? ermm,, ehh,, Kvartmíluklúbburinn, Quart/Milo/Clubbing, gets you pretty close.

it's pretty much explained in this video:

Someday I would like to replace the billet handles on my butterfly for wooden ones. For the nostalgic effect.

I got to get a better picture of it when left side of the body is off, but I built an extension I fitted to the valve body actuator that puts the rod end at the 12'o clock position.
That way the lever on the transmission points straight up instead of straight down. Heim joint on both ends attaches the rod from the shifter to the transmission.
The downward camera angle in the attached picture is awkward but it fits without hitting the downtube and is tucked neatly beside the frame as far away from my feet as possible. The rubber hose you see in that picture is from the brake fluid reservoir and the trans has a carbon scattershield.

The extension is removable and universal with minimal welding, as we might have to swap Glides from one racecar to another.

The rod goes through the small hole in the floor/firewall.

Here it is in the assembly stages..

That RED was built in Norway and bought from Sweden (or was it the other way around?)

It currently has a former ProStockTruck big bore 358 small block Chevy.

It launches off the transbrake at 8k rpm and shifts at over 10k. The sound it makes at the line is unbelievable, pure engine music.

Got a video of it here but the sound unfortunately gets distorted when it hits the chip..

I couldn't find a shifter that fitted my budget, while fitting the close surroundings inside my FED.

While a lot of dragster guys and girls locate the shifter in the middle, under the steering wheel, I have never before seen a shifter in a dragster on the left side. ( but then again, there's only half a dozen dragsters here in Iceland)

It works for me, its within close range  of the steering wheel and I keep my hand on it while staging and launching the car. Once the 1-2 shift is completed I got two hands on the wheel.

Its connected to the transmission via 3/8 stainless rod, fitting the upside down, slightly lengthened gear selector.

From 1'st the gear lever has a slot to hit when 2gear engages. then you flex the lever over and past the slot to hit neutral. Once in neutral you have to lift a spring loaded flap to find reverse and park.

I made a small video of how it operates from inside the car.

Cool build Larry, love the lightweight circle track components.

Will you be able to shift the transmission during the run?
