Went to the track on Saturday, can you believe it was the first race of the year ???!!! being stuck here at 66°N sucks for racing.

Well anyhow, played it safe, mild timing, low rpm shift, no nitrous and had the time of my life.

Car weighed 1850 with me in it and full ballast.  It was happy with 5.25 psi in the rear. started lower but walked over the tire. the sissy stick was about 3.5-4" in the air.
Went 5.910 @ 113.35 in the eighth with a 1.275 60foot. Had a little shake in the front end on the first pass and increased the caster some and got rid of it.

The altered car pictured hit the red, so I got a free pass into the semi's.

More and bigger pictures of the race are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bb-kristinsson/sets/72157645064574505/

Bikes / Two different builds
« on: June 03, 2014, 01:41:07 PM »
You'll never know, these four photos might inspire someone to build something stupid...

1st is a dragbike I built for a friend of mine, it uses three 700cc two stroke snowmobile engines, built for nitrous, each just over 100hp without the spray.

2nd is a v8 bike I built for street use, running an aluminium 215 Buick and a Harley 5speed. Got sold off before I got to run it, but I'm getting the itch to build another one.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Piston ring end gap
« on: May 11, 2014, 09:54:02 AM »
I never use less gap for second, I suggest you dont either.
Second ring is not for compression sealing, its only purpose is keeping oil from the top ring.
If there is less gap on second, pressure will build up between the rings from the microscopic leak from the top ring. This pressure will lift the top ring off its lower seat in the piston and cause it to flutter and lose seal.

Well, we often joke about how the 6cyl guys are always missing two...

I am trying to put together a class at my local track, similar to the H.A.M.B. altered dragsters.  An affordable way to get into dragracing using something you built yourself. I want to open up the engine rules a bit, so parts can be more available concidering the used parts market here in Iceland. I am looking forward to see some BMW's, Benz and Jeep inline sixes.

« on: April 28, 2014, 08:53:50 AM »
I run two 140gph pumps. One for motor, one for nitrous. Its perhaps 900hp on the spray. With the tank up front pump requirements change drastically

I run 5.43:1
32" tires for the strip and 34.5" in the sand.
I rev the snot out of it.

Front Engine Dragsters / Zoomie Header Size

Last time out It took an 80 jet on the first kit and 72 on second. Both big shot plates. Second kit came in on the shift.

Mine are stepped from 1.3/4 to 2"  and have the shape of funny car zoomies.
Stepped are about 2" in length and the pipes are 28-30" long
You can see where the blue heat mark ends, no idea if that is good or bad. It did not noticably change going from N/A to nitrous.

Any tips on building/attaching the wings?

I'd start at 5pounds first, and lower it half a pound the next run and see how it reacts.
Get a big gauge where you can see the pounds in atleast 1/4 psi increments.
Never mind the E.T. It runs what it runs. Just have fun and try to bring the car home in one piece.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / hprsepower limit of 392
« on: February 05, 2014, 01:29:28 AM »
We race two engines, allthough SBC, I would think the same applies to connecting rods. Both engines ingest more nitrous than most care to think of when using stock blocks and cranks. The small one (355) has more power ~70hp but uses less bearings on both rods and mains. It has aluminum rods. There is some minor cap walk on both engines though at this power level and we have broken the no1 main cap but without hurting bearings on the alu rod engine. The engine seems way happier with aluminum rods, than without.
