I am running a 383 SBC with a 8-71 in a FED and and rebuilding the power glide. Should I upgrade to a 8 clutch pack or will a new 6 and band be fine? I don't think I make any serious hp the car runs in the 8.5 area but I did smoke the clutches in there now.

I lightly burned my 6 disc behind a NA BBC. Went to an 8 disc and added more power. I assume it’s all good, haven’t had it apart in 7 years. If it’s apart and burnt 6 it’s not that much more for 8 steels and fibers. Only change would be machining the piston for clearance. I’m assuming pump condition is good.

When I worked at Exner transmission most any time we did a glide it would get 8 clutches. Think it's worth the investment to just do it.

If it was an un blown car I would say 5 or 6 would be fine but in your case I would go to the 8 clutch pack ! It seems that blower cars are a little harder on clutches ! Also as some one said you might want to step up on your pump pressure a little with a heavier relief spring in the valve body !

A blower adds torque So why would you not want best set up you can get to handle it? Heck I would go with 10 pack drum set up. I question rather I need one and I don't have a blower. I do figure to install a 10 clutch drum before throwing a heavy load of nitro at it.
In a fed we ride with feet right next to trans and having best parts in there just seems like good idea. JMO

Been having big trouble with my sons Pro charged big block ! could not get more than 6 runs out of a high gear without burning it up ! He went to a ringless shaft big pump and 10 clutches ! Also a new BTE valve body ! We will see how that works out !
