Events / NDRL 2016 Schedule
« on: January 14, 2016, 08:27:37 PM »
The 2016 NDRL schedule is posted.

I think we will be running all of them except for June 16th.

Our son out in Boulder will be moving to a new location and I believe we will run out there with the Motor Home (if it is running).

Gassers / 1949 Chevy Gasser Build
« on: November 13, 2015, 09:24:49 PM »
Well I have had this Gasser project floating around in the garage since 2011.

My wife and I have finally decided to make some progress on this project.

My son used it as his project when he attended the Hot Rod Institute.

He did quite a bit of chassis work which was impressive. This is the center section that has been dropped down into the original chassis.

as seen here

He also did a great deal of body fabrication to get the rear slicks to fit in the wheel well opening and look like that was the way it came from the factory. This entailed fabrication on the rear door as well.

He got to this point.

Once he returned from the Hot Rod Institute the Gasser sat (4 years) with no further progress.

This evening new progress was made. A gen V Chevy 454 was purchase to liven up the time line of the build of the Gasser.

It is currently sitting in the back of the pickup, and in the morning will be brought into the garage for transformation into a engine to sit in the gasser frame.

This picture was circulated in my car club.

"Anybody remember when the Arfons brothers had a six-wheel Green Monster?  Never saw this before, but from the presence of the NHRA Safety Safari Plymouth wagon, I'd guess about '53 or '54"

Events / NEW ENGLAND HOT ROD REUNION GOES ON HIATUS IN 2016
« on: November 12, 2015, 09:12:33 PM »
Wed, 2015-11-04 12:00

Officials from the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum presented by Automobile Club of Southern California announced today that the New England Hot Rod Reunion presented by AAA Insurance will go on hiatus in 2016.

The successful event, which has been held the past three seasons at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H., experienced increased attendance and racer participation.

However, in 2016, the historic track just north of metro Boston will host a major event to celebrate its 50th anniversary around the same date. Also in 2016, the NHRA Motorsports Museum’s California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California will celebrate its 25th anniversary at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.
Due to these two major milestone races taking place in 2016, the NHRA Motorsports Museum determined it would be best to support the New England Dragway’s event and put the New England Hot Rod Reunion on hold.

“We have certainly enjoyed holding the event at New England Dragway the past three seasons and we’ve seen a positive trend from spectators and the number of race teams who have supported the event,” said Larry Fisher, executive director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum. “Given the two major landmark events that will take place in 2016, the NHRA Motorsports Museum has put the New England Hot Rod Reunion on hold for the upcoming season. The Museum will in turn focus on its other two Reunion events, including special plans for the 25th Anniversary of the California Hot Rod Reunion.”

Details for the 25th Anniversary of the California Hot Rod Reunion will be announced in the near future.

I have attended this race three years running, I will truly miss this event.

Front Engine Dragsters / Winter projects
« on: October 10, 2015, 08:43:13 PM »
I'm thinking of removing the cooling system, making it external at the pit (radiator / fan / quick disconnect hoses to the block)

Because of less power usage, retiring the yellow top battery for something smaller and lighter.

Steve and I did a quick install of a two way radio between the crew chief (My Better Half) and myself so I have guidance for backing up after the burn out (I have always done that blind as we are usually a two person operation).

We never got to try it because on the way to the finial race of the season the Motor Home broke down and we did not get there (we are actually leaving Monday to go pick it up,  it has finally been declared "Fixed" ( I can only hope it is))

So...I would like to go back and do a finish installation (currently there are a lot of wire ties)

What are your plans?

Heading out next week (September 16th) for NDRL last race of the season / Goodguys Nostalgia Nationals at Beech Bend,KY

Anyone else going to be there?

Matt,

I have been running a 8.000 index, calculated HP is 740 HP, on the dyno it ran 713.

I would like to run 7.500, using Wallace Racing Calculators, I think I will need 913HP.

I can get that by dialing up the blower (currently running 28% under driven with a 95 pill). and reducing the size of the bypass pill (more air and fuel).

The block was carefully picked, no undercutting of the mains, I have a valley brace. The block was a RamAir III which means it has stock four bolt mains.

There is nothing else stock inside, all good stuff.

The block is not hard blocked

I have asked several "Pontiac experts" and gotten several responces

"Glenn,
I don’t see any problem with that.  I’ve had a few guys do this type of combo and the blocks seem to fair OK with it.  Now don’t be shocked that in time it gives up, but you should get a few years out of it? "

First reply from this person
"The cast main caps will be the weak link. It will last until it fails. The aftermarket steel caps and upgraded dowel pins with main studs will help to hold the block together. The 750 hp is stressing the stock caps. The 900 hp and the rpm will increase the stress greatly in the block. If the caps and block fail usually everything is lost.
We would use a new IAII block from  All Pontiac for the combo.
Let me know your thinking."

Second reply from this person
"The caps are cast the area around the long ½ bolts is the thin area. They usually break in the bolt holes on the long bolts. That is the thinnest area on the cap. Maybe ¼” to 5/16” of material on each side of the bolt.  The aftermarket caps are thicker and stronger. The weak link usually fails first. The 750 hp is a large amount of stress pushing on the crank. We broke the caps and block in the 700-750 hp and high rpm back in the mid 80’s. I had the steel caps made to be strong enough to hold the block together. We also use upgraded dowel pins in the stock blocks. The IAII block has the steel caps with splayed outer bolts, 3/8” dowels and the main caps are recessed. We use the IAII block for 700 + hp combos now that we have it. We did not have it in the 80’s and early 90’s.
Just info for you to use in your consideration."

"Hi Glenn, Well that's a loaded question lol. I have seen some turbo engines make 1500 plus HP and live for several seasons and I have seen 500 HP normally aspirated engines cracked between the mains and cam tunnel. So I would say it all depends on the tune of the engine. Obviously when the engine isn't HAPPY it's going to let you know. So to sum it up 400 to 2000 HP if tuned properly and nothing acts up."

Front Engine Dragsters / Front Tires
« on: June 17, 2015, 05:43:37 PM »
Went through tech inspection here at Hot Rod Reunion Bowling Green.

They were unhappy with my treaded front tires because they did not say racing on them.

They did let me pass as they did not say MoPed or limited to 30 MPH on them.

Member of this forum did not pass as his said 30MPH.

I would like to keep the nostalgic look of treaded front tires, but will be going to the New England Hot Rot Reunion and do not want to have a problem with Inspection there.

Suggestions?
