May 17-19

Topeka, KS 66619

Elevation: 980 feet
Tickets: NHRATix.com; 800-884-NHRA (6472)

Sprawling multipurpose Heartland Park Topeka has been a Midwest favorite since it opened in 1989, but its dragstrip has gained the majority of headlines. The event, originally in the fall, has featured numerous record performances, the most significant of which was the shattering of the quarter-mile four-second and 300-mph barriers in Funny Car in 1993. The event moved to its current spot on the schedule in 2001.
2012 Recap: David Grubnic broke a six-year drought when he beat Spencer Massey by a .009-second margin in the Top Fuel final. Jack Beckman, who had swapped cars and crews with teammate Ron Capps four races earlier, cut an otherworldly .004 light in the Funny Car final to beat Capps on a holeshot. Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) won for the second time in the season.

How to Get There: The track is on Topeka Boulevard where it intersects Gary Ormsby Drive, four miles south of Interstate 470. From Kansas City, take the Kansas Turnpike (I-70) to the South Topeka exit and travel south on Topeka Boulevard to the track. From Wichita, take the Kansas Turnpike (I-335) to the South Topeka exit and travel south on Topeka Boulevard to the track. From I-470, take the Topeka Boulevard exit and travel south to the track.

One of NHRA’s long-established events, this belle of the South has gained a reputation as one of the tougher events on the tour to win. With summer approaching, warm temperatures can turn the event into “Hotlanta” and throw crew chiefs a curve as they try to glue their charges to the facility’s 660-foot concrete launchpad.

2012 Recap: Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) notched a breakout victory with his new team and kept Tony Schumacher out of the winner’s circle in the process. In front of their team sponsor, Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) won an all-Summit Racing team final over Jason Line in their second such meeting of the year. Ron Capps (Funny Car) scored his first win of the season three races after Rahn Tobler took over as crew chief. Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) kept the Harleys 3-0 by beating first-time finalist Michael Ray.

How to Get There: The track is about 65 miles north of Atlanta on Interstate 85 at U.S. Highway 441. From Atlanta, take I-85 north to Exit 149 (Highway 441). Travel north on Highway 441 to Steven Tanger Boulevard. Go left on Tanger Boulevard, then right on E. Ridgeway Road, and follow the signs to the track (approximately a half-mile on the right).

Royal Purple Raceway benefits from incredible atmospheric conditions because of its proximity to Trinity Bay, which feeds the facility cool air. The track’s first NHRA national event, in fall 1988, established RPR as one of the sport’s quickest with NHRA’s first four-second Top Fuel quarter-mile pass and a new national record. Since then, the track has been host to a dizzying array of record runs, including the first sub-4.5-second Top Fuel quarter-mile pass by Larry Dixon in 1999. This is race No. 3 for the Pro Stock Motorcycles.

2012 Recap: John Force Racing got off to a 6-0 start in Funny Car; Mike Neff led the way this time and avenged his red-light in the final round one season earlier. Morgan Lucas left no questions unanswered during his Top Fuel win by qualifying No. 1 and making the quickest lap of every eliminations round. Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) stayed undefeated at RPR by winning one year after scoring his first victory. Andrew Hines cut a perfect light in the Pro Stock Motorcycle final to beat Hector Arana Jr. on a holeshot.

How to Get There: Baytown is 25 miles east of downtown Houston. From downtown Houston, take I-10 east to SH 146 (Exit 797) and go south to FM 1405 (approximately 2 miles). Take FM 1405 east (left) to FM 565 and take another left. The racetrack will be one mile east on your left.

As if Las Vegas weren’t loud and ostentatious enough in its own right, the city hosts the fire and fury of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series twice each year, this event in the spring and the crucial penultimate stop on the schedule in the fall. Contested at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a crown jewel befitting this glitzy city, the event has become a pivotal stop on the tour. This event is the new home of the eight-car Pro Stock bonus event, the K&N Horsepower Challenge, the winner of which receives $50,000.

2012 Recap: Robert Hight, the only racer in the event’s 12-year history to win more than once in Funny Car, scored a third win at this event and extended his winning streak to three. Allen Johnson became the fourth different Pro Stock winner in as many events in the 2012 season by scoring a victory at an upset-laden event in which the previous three winners were eliminated in the first or second rounds. Spencer Massey hit the jackpot in the third all-Don Schumacher Racing final in Top Fuel.

How to Get There: From the Las Vegas Strip and downtown, follow Interstate 15 north to Speedway Boulevard (Exit 54). Follow signs to the main parking area.

The traditional East Coast opener and the season’s first of 16 events for Pro Stock Motorcycle riders and first of 10 for Pro Mod racers, this event is one of the sport’s most revered with a rich tradition of history-making performances. This hallowed dragstrip has entertained spring-break-loving fans for four decades with such notable occasions as the first 260-mph Top Fuel and Funny Car runs in 1984 and the first 270-mph and 300-mph Top Fuel passes, in 1986 and 1992, respectively. Its 675-foot concrete launchpad is one of the longest on the tour.

2012 Recap: Top Fuel winner Morgan Lucas caught a break when his parachutes deployed early in the first round, and he followed that opportunity by making three of the five quickest runs in history with three straight 3.74s. Robert Hight (Funny Car) made the quickest run of every eliminations round before beating Johnny Gray in a pedalfest in the final. Mike Edwards used a near-perfect light to upset Greg Anderson on a holeshot in the Pro Stock final. Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) scored the maximum-allotted 150 points by setting a national record en route to victory.

How to Get There: The track is on County Road 225, eight miles north of Gainesville Regional Airport. If traveling north on I-75, use Exit 382, Williston Road (CR 331), and turn left (east). NHRA’s annual duel in the desert continues in its traditional spot as the year’s second event. A Southwest fixture since 1985, the event offers teams a chance to redeem mistakes made at the opener. Charlie Allen, a former Funny Car racer, constructed a track that makes people forget that it sits at 1,100 feet above sea level. The facility is also known for record performances, such as Tony Schumacher’s historic 330-mph quarter-mile blast in 1999.

2012 Recap: Robert Hight (Funny Car) rebounded from a disappointing first-round upset from the No. 1 qualifying position at the season opener by winning the event, defeating teammate Mike Neff in the final. Antron Brown upset teammate Tony Schumacher in the Top Fuel final to extend Schumacher’s winless drought. Pro Stock also featured an all-team final in which Jason Line scored the win against Greg Anderson.

How to Get There: The track is 10 miles south of Phoenix and minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Int’l Airport. From Phoenix, take Interstate 10 east to the Wild Horse Pass exit (162). From Tucson, take I-10 west to the Wild Horse Pass exit (162).

Events / 2013 The Gear Jam May 11 Atlanta Dragway
« on: February 01, 2013, 09:23:16 AM »
Address:
Atlanta Dragway,
500 E. Ridgeway Road,
Commerce, GA 30529
http://atlantadragway.com/apcm/templates/track_info.asp?articleid=2657&zoneid=35

Welcome to THE GEAR JAM, drag racing the way it used to be
The purpose of this event is to recreate a day at the drags in the ‘60s, with everything from Stocks and Super Stocks, to Gassers, Dragsters and Altereds. And if there were a bunch of Altered Wheel Base cars in the staging lanes, that wouldn’t hurt our feelings a bit.

1966 and older passenger car and truck body styles for Gasser, Front Engine Dragster, Altered/Comp Coupe, Nostalgia Super Stock and Hot Rod. 1967-74 passenger car and truck for Muscle Car. Dragsters and Altereds should be built to late-‘60s or earlier appearance. We want period looking cars… these can be restored original race cars, new builds, old unrestored cars fresh from the barn.

Any engine through the ‘80s is allowed. We’re looking for an engine style here, not casting numbers and date codes. For instance, Big and Small Block Chevy, Ford, Chrysler and AMC… no Ford Mod Motors, new modern Hemi or Chevy LS engines.
Race-day format
We know all you guys with vintage race cars have them for fun—and the “fun” is making heads-up passes!

For some, that fun is simply the ability to share the staging lanes with like-minded individuals with period-correct cars reliving the heyday of drag racing, and making heads-up passes against a car that looks as era-correct as yours, rather than a late-model Bracket Camaro.

For others, competing for some prize money is a lot more fun, and their cars are set on “kill” (or just shy of it) all the time. Some guys are happy running 12s or 13s, other’s aren’t happy unless they’re running deep in the 9s or faster.

So to bring out as many cars as we can, from both sides of the ET, we’re going to offer purse money for the Quick 8 in each class; those racers who make “the program,” will run through three rounds of eliminations.

For everyone else who came to have fun, we’ve got you covered with close, heads-up racing. Everyone after the Quick 8 will be paired-up against their closest competitor for individual 2-out-of-3 shootouts while the Quick 8 are running eliminations. This is a guide to give you someone to race competitively with—if you want to grudge-race someone, work it out amongst yourselves and have at it!

This lets all our racers get a full day of racing in, and it gives our spectators a great, full all-day show.

After the final eliminations, all class winners, and the two other cars with the quickest ET of the day, will do a round-robin 8-car heads-up elimination for Mr. Top Eliminator.

General Rules:
All classes:
All vehicles must pass NHRA tech to run.

Should have vintage style wheels; They don’t need to be old original wheels, just styles that were available in the ‘60s:5- slots, 5-spokes, Halibrands, Cragars, Americans, steelies, wires, factory wheels, hubcaps or moon discs. We'd like wheels limited to 16- inch diameters, unless pre-war wires.
If you have a set of custom, vintage "looking" billet wheels, such as taller smoothies that have "the look" of something traditional but are modern, please send us a picture of your car to get the go-ahead. If it's rubber band tires on 24s, don't bother. No modern paint schemes
