Title: bolts or studs
Post by: hotrod316 on January 21, 2016, 07:43:07 AM
Matt,
I'm trying something different,  building a 305 sprint car, (why is the right answers)  :P for a 14 year old driver, The price different is a lot between ARP studs and bolts no you think on a 305 450 hp max there is a need for studs?
as always thanks for your time!

Pay now or pay later is the answer

Its not about clamping force but about servicing and wearing out the threads on the block and having to repair them. If he cant afford the price difference, maybe he should not be running a Sprint class anyway.
When I ran 410 Sprints, I would sell my RR tire that I ran the previous week for $40/$50 to a rookie to save THEM money ($200 new) and BUY my fuel for the night

Not sure I would spend it on 305,then if had 305 I would not need new boat anchor. Wearing out the threads might not be bad thing. How much do you service one of those engines?

the car my nephew's works on, 410, about 3 races, sometime 3 times a night.     but this is a 305 racesaver motor most you guys and gays would LOL at the specs on these motors. this is a 3500.00  not the 45 to 50,000.00 410 :)

Studs are usually better for sealing than bolts. Sometimes they come with their own issues such as clearance for header flanges or springs inside the valve covers. i use studs wherever I can as sealing those pesky gaskets in race cars with decades old engine technology and fits is more of an issue than wearing out treads. Cool guy helping out your nephew!!! 8)
