Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Stroud Chute
« on: May 01, 2022, 11:02:39 AM »
The chute is packed into the bag that has a strap running through it and is attached to the spring/pilot chute. Bag is placed into the chute bag and coil the strap on the bag and place the spring/ pilot chute on top of that and lace the 4 chute bag flaps shut. I have never had mine not deploy correctly.

The Carl Munroe book is a great book. It goes from stock rebuild to race modifications. Great tool

I don’t think the Intake valve closing point should be left out of the static compression conversation.

Does it drop holes because the ground straps get burned off?

I like lead solder for checking some clearances

From 8.0’s to mid 7.40’s

Spud's nitro notes are for NA application not blown application. I run 47% NA and only fire on methanol until the pump picks up fuel, hot or cold. Takes about 15 seconds or less. Can't speak first hand to anything over that or blown application.

Not sure but I can tell you that it uses a standard timing cover with the pan seal portion cut off and is bolted to the gear drive support. I don’t see why the seal portion of an Enderle couldn’t be machined off to accommodate but I have never done it.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: running smaller dose on nitro
« on: August 20, 2021, 06:44:30 AM »
I have never had any issues at 47%. I ground the mag after a pass, pull the plugs when back in the pits and let it air out. I always start cranking the engine with the ignition off then flip it on. When I warm it on nitro I pull the fuel shut off and continue running it on my methanol startup drip tank to purge the nitro. Bad things can happen, I just try to not be one of those stories. I think your nitro/alky jug story needs “the rest of the story”.

I run 11.7:1 in a BBC (different animal than a hemi) but this seems to work for me at mid 40’s%. I used to run 12.45:1 and always had loose flex plate to crank bolts and Valve cover bolts. Tuning window was very small. Now it is very forgiving and no bolt issues and et’s are way better. I think Gene Adams spoke about a max of 11:1 for NA nitro in a hemi but that was a while ago. I believe Spud was around 12:1 in his SBC at 100%. My maintenance and cost is low, don’t break stuff and I make plenty of power.

I lightly burned my 6 disc behind a NA  BBC. Went to an 8 disc and added more power. I assume it’s all good, haven’t had it apart in 7 years. If it’s apart and burnt 6 it’s not that much more for 8 steels and fibers. Only change would be machining the piston for clearance. I’m assuming pump condition is good.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: OIl pressure kill switch
« on: June 03, 2021, 06:54:05 AM »
Terminal placement would be (if using a Bosch style relay) your mag kill wire goes to pin 30 of the relay, pin 87 goes to ground. Pin 85 to fused Battery +, and 86 goes to your oil pressure switch with a switch between pin 86 and the Oil pressure switch so you can open it to start the engine. They do make adjustable OP switches. Moroso, Longacre and some of the NOS companies. Engine may kill when you pull the Parachute at the end, may or may not be an issue. I use a standard Bosch relay for my mag kill and never had any issues as far as mag kill arcing across the relay switch contacts. Spud would be the one to answer that.

Oh yes, my tuneup won’t help, it’s for a BBC with nitro

Tuneup will depend on pump flow, nozzle size, engine cubic inches , etc. Call Spud and try extension 101. He has never not called me back. He does get busy, not sure if his staffing is back to max yet. He is very good and won’t sell you anything you don’t need.

I use a secondary only to bring the engine back to idle rpm after a burnout. When you let out of it after the burnout the rpm is hi so the pump speed is hi so fuel output is hi so rpm stays hi and takes a lot longer to come down to idle so you can put it in reverse to idle back to the line to stage. Secondary dumps that extra fuel to prevent that situation. I run a Hilborn and idle is controlled by throttle plate air gap, barrel valve placement and the primary return spring tension for idle fuel pressure.
