Roo Man's Room / Re: chassis top rail has bowed outwards
« on: May 29, 2021, 03:30:42 PM »
Hey Mate. I bent my chassis doing wheel stands so run a string line along the bottom rails and see if you haven't. Bend the bottom rail upward and the top rail will bend in or out.

Over the years I've sometimes read or seen things that have really hit the button and re fired the engine for me.

Once in the 1980's I was struggling with my driving and saw a side bar piece in a magazine story about a top fuel bike racer. Can't remember what it was now but it just resonated and fixed my dramas on the spot!  When I had changed from a clutch-auto to a converter transmission I couldn't get it off the line cleanly and read a piece from Gale Banks where he stated they had Prostock engines in boats that left from idle,  that got my brain juices thinking about how he had them set up and I adopted his thinking toward my set up and away we went.

I've read stuff from Don Garlits,  Shirly Muldowney and other big names but they just haven't had the same effect on me. Have any of you read or can recommend any stories, books etc to help others?

Cheers

Front Engine Dragsters / EGT tuning
« on: January 30, 2021, 12:08:52 AM »
Hello
Any anyone tuning with an EGT gauge probe in a single zoomie.  If the probe is close to the head I assume it will be in the flame on a NA Engine and read high. What temps are you looking for at idle and full noise?
Cheers
Tony

Spud Miller's Cave / E85

Anybody run a mechanical injection set up o  E85? Since the terrorist attacks years ago I can't just get Methanol from my local joint any more so it's a 40 km drive to get any. I can get E85 at numerous locations and I keep hearing it's an oxygen carrying fuel and the carb guys are getting good results. Can I run it with my single butterfly mechanical injection and do I need to make any changes.? Also I run without any water in the block and I believe the volume of E85 needed will keep it vool same as using methanol.

If it's injected and just for fun, I'd just stick with what you have. You really won't notice a diff in your application unless one of them isn't healthy.

But...trying something new is fun and learning new tricks keeps it interesting. If it comes with a mag drive that fits your engine and the rotation is correct for you, the only hassle you'll have is to mount the coil somewhere.

 Have fun!

 Spud

It's a belt drive set up so fitting isnt an issue. And my car has never been out the same way twice

Hey all. I have an internal coil Vertex in a just for fun injected methanol small block chrysler fed. I friend has a Super Mag 3 he'll let me have for the right price. His is a belt drive set up so I would have to dick around a bit to set it up. Will the SM3 be any better than what I have now - more complete combustion?

I've gone to making my headers out of stainless. Way better, less hassles with rust and fatigue. You can get mandrel U-bends of every flavor from Woolf Aircraft in Romulus MI.

I've been told Stainless headers crack up? Is that an urban myth?

Maybe everyone that had planned to go racing but are locked away by this Virus can join me by pushing your car out into your driveway and fire 'em up this Saturday!

Jon's Wheel House / Re: Hole size ?
« on: March 18, 2020, 03:52:22 AM »
It's okay I just ordered some tubes with a regular size rubber valve teats to avoid butchering the wheels. These wheels were made in my home town from the mid 1970's until maybe 1985. This is the 4th set I've had in 30 plus years but they are hard to find now - this pair took 5 years! These have had a tyre fitted but have never been used. Old and Heavy, you bet ya, but I love 'em

Jon's Wheel House / Hole size ?
« on: March 17, 2020, 03:27:55 AM »
Howdy all. I have just sold my Weld Pro Star wheels and noticed they had a reasonably big hole in  the rim for the tube teat to go through. The tubes I have have a metal bit where the valves go which will fit through a 1/2" hole but where that joins the tube the tube has a raised section that needs to sit in the hole as well. The Welds had maybe a 5/8" hole. I need to run tubes because I'm going to an alloy slot type wheel that has a reputation of being porous. What size holes do I need. Or can I run big 4wd tubes with a conventional rubber teat?

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Bent chassis

It's MS and I don't know why I changed the way I tie down. I used to leave the front axle on the winch with an elastic strap over each side of the axle to stop it bouncing with straps over each rear tyre and must have done 25,000 miles on rough Aussie rural roads and never had a problem!

Front Engine Dragsters / Bent chassis
« on: October 19, 2019, 05:07:14 PM »
Hi All.
I've bent my chassis a bit. I would like to think it's from show business wheelstands but I think it's more from the way I've been tieing down on the trailer LOL. I'm about 155" WB with a solid mounted front axle. My first upright is 48" back from the axle and has no diagonal going to the second upright a further 20" back. I put it on stands and jumped on the axle and have pulled it back into shape. I'm going to ad a diagonal between the first and second uprights. I have no left to right bracing before the second upright 68" back from the front axle. Do I need any? Will the two proposed diagonals be sufficient to stop further trouble. Yes I will revisit how I load it on the trailer.
Cheers

Front Engine Dragsters / Oil temp
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:25:39 AM »
Hello
Just wondering what temp your oil is? I have had some bearing issues and been using 20/50 oil and looking to go to a 10/40 and just thinking the engine oil may not have been hot enough?  I run methanol and no cooling so I was looking at putting a temperature probe in the remote oil filter adaptor.
Cheers

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Show us your Dragster art layout

Well the paint looked like a bushfire in the can, said to lay it over a black acrylic base - no probs lay the black down, lay the red over the top and it turned into a purple sorta brown blend! Yikes!
Had a look in a mates stash and laid this blue over the messed up red. Came out pretty nice. Had a local lad do some brushwork and it's everything I wanted.
