Spud Miller's Cave / Re: First weekend out...loosing power.

I will fix pigtail just in case. I use 12 line from tank to pump.
But i think maybe i have a mag with weights - i thought i had a fixed one, and we set it to 38...at what rpm would it reach max with weights?

Spud Miller's Cave / First weekend out...loosing power.
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:11:07 AM »
I ran at a 1/8 mile race this weekend (first time out with the fed). This track is an un-preped old airfield.
Had a bad testrun on saturday, and nothing seemed to go our way. We found the problems and had at least 10 hours of wrenching and trying to find parts before we got to bed that day. On sunday mornings startup we seemed to have finally fixed everything and the engine sounded real good. Decided for a new testrun...
Engine felt great on the burnout, and also until a little bit over half way on the 1/8... then it startet to flat out and partially die. Kept it alive gently for a while, then it died just before i was about to pullover to the return. Timeslip: 6.9 and 98mph.

We got it back and checked everything, but could not find a reason. Went through ignition, nozzles/fuellines/pillholders..  Started it up in the pits a little bit later, and still sounded like a champ, so we decided to do another testrun. But same story again, everything good on burnout and halfway...then engine starts to flat out, then finally die just before pulling over, almost on the same spot.
350 sbc with Hilborn stack injection.

Any idea what this can be? I have a feeling the magneto is playing with us..

That "Pig tail" vent on the fuel tank can become a problem, if fuel splash gets into it, its trapped and if not cleared before the run, The vacuum pull from the pump is not enough to suck it out and the fuel from the outlet will surge because of the blocked vent. If you bend it over at the base, now its a "cork-screw" and drains itself

I agree to the theory, and a corck screw should be much better (i might make one some day), but this car has been racing with this exact pigtail for at least 45 years now, that makes me believe it should work as is, otherwise it would be thrown away a long time ago.

Making a little bit of progress...  8)
Made the first test-start with engine yesterday. We had some various problems that needed to be solved before it fired, like a brand new starter that seemed to be crap after a few turns (but couple of the guys tore it apart and made a few hotfixes to it, so it worked perfect later on).
It ran a little bit lean on 3 cylinders on idle, but full speed seemed to be okey. We removed the nozzles and cleaned them properly, but that didnt seem to help, so im going to check intake gasket and adjust butterflies.
Motor sounded real good though :)
Now im just hopeing it will run strong for a few races without any big problems. Full rebuild this winter, as there are several things that i want to improve.

Hoha! Engine started today!!! :D
Had some minor issues to fix, but it after a few hours of work - Blam!
It sounded strong..and angry! A little hot on 3 cylinders on idle, but other than that it sounded awesome!

I was told to prime on alky...but the local guys always use regular gas. That said...in Norway we have 98 octane in the pumps, and all good. Very little fuel was required to start.
So now we just need to fix a couple of small things and we're ready for a real test in one week.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: How much oil?
« on: July 03, 2015, 12:12:04 PM »
Milodon states that this pan is 7qts plus the filter. We ran  this pan with 8qts in our blown SBC running 6.60's. I have also run this pan with 6qts in a lower HP application.
I do have one of these oil pans for sale granted it does come with all the parts between the pan and intake.......lol,

I already have one  ;)
But was not sure how much oil to fill in it. This is not a very high power engine. Injected alky. Not highest cr around. I'll try 6qts + filter then, should be safe?

How much oil do you recomend for a sbc with a Milodon 31145 pan?

Got help from good friends and modified an oil pan i bought from David to fit my 80-85 block, bolted on and ready to go.
A friend of mine made some cool banners for our club/org.

Tonight im going to push the car outside in the sun and give it a nice cleanup as it has been in my mancave for too long now. Hope for a startup on saturday

Im only 37, so i was born too late for the golden era of FEDs, but there is something about the 1960-70s that have always been close to my heart; cars, music, motorcycles, lifestyle...
The first time i did see a FED was in my uncles old american car mags when i was somewhere between 4-6 yrs. There was all kind of cool cars and also a FEDs (although the picture that i remember best was two vw bugs doing HUGE wheelies side by side). I was very impressed by all the pictures, allthough i didnt understand anything... and my uncle "hated" kids, and i didnt have the guts to ask him about those awsome cars.. Rest of family had no interest (and still dont), so i did not have the oppertunity to attend a dragrace (very few of them in Norway at that time).
Luckily, i lived (and still do), 5min away from an old German airfield, and in 1985 the first dragrace took place there (soon to be one of Europes fastest tracks!) - and i think that was it, i was hooked forever!

A front engine dragster is just like a pretty girl, perfect lines, looks beautiful but can still be angry as xxxx..

Wanted to buy / Urgent: SBC timing cover for fuel pump
« on: June 23, 2015, 12:09:20 PM »
I need a new timing cover, preferable one from Hilborn (since thats what i have now).
Anyone have a spare one they will part with for a good price?

Just a personal note---support for the steering rod should be closer to the clevis joint. In a loaded situation the rod will flex down before moving forward. Will it affect the steering on your car? Dont know. But in the vast majority of builds where mutiple piece steering rods are used and not in a straight line, the support is placed within 4 to 6 inches of the joint so the motion is singlular and direct

It has worked like that for 35 years, so i guess for a few races a year it will work for me also, im not going to change it.
