Drag Racing / Bandimere Speedway Closing October 22, 2023
« on: October 22, 2023, 10:18:51 AM »
Bandimere Speedway's last day today after 65 years.  The track is now open and they are doing Test and Tune only today.  If you pass tech, you can make a final pass down the strip.  I have a lot of good memories there, thank you to the Bandimere family.  Alan

Door Cars / Fuel tank?
« on: October 31, 2020, 11:32:24 AM »
My friend has a 2002 vw beetle that has been sitting since 2013, it was his daughter’s car.  He asked me to help him get it running, he has only basic tools and although very smart, not with cars.  The battery showed .5 volts, it needed a battery which we replaced.  We turn the ignition on to see how much gas is in it, and it shows full tank.

He knows it needs a State emission test to register for new plates, and old gasoline might make the engine fail the emission test.  I try to siphon the gas out of the tank.  The rubber hose goes down about 12 inches and stops.  I did manage to siphon out about ½ cup before it stopped flowing.  The gasoline is not clear, it has a golden-brown color.

I try again and again with different type hoses to get further than 12 inches into that tank.  After looking up a picture of the gas tank, now we see the filler tube goes down 12 inches, then takes an immediate 90 degree turn, then goes 12 more inches before it enters the top of the tank.  This 90 degree turn is what stopping my siphon hose.  I think vw engineers added this 90 degree turn to prevent any siphoning.

Anyone have an easy idea how to drain gas out of this vw, the tank holds 14 gallons.  If it were the race car, it’d be easy…  Alan

Spud Miller's Cave / FIE
« on: February 21, 2020, 09:16:55 AM »
Over the years, I’ve bought items from FIE plus Spud has upgraded a Vertex mag and Super mag for me.  Each FIE product and service I’ve received were top of the line, no issues and always leaves me in a good mood, especially after talking to Spud.  FIE website is the first place I look (and learn) if I need something that moves electric current or fuel for my race car.

Race cars are not normal, with them comes extreme heat and vibration.  You must do all possible to protect and maintain your components so they perform consistently, especially those delicate components.

My dragster has the FIE Red twist knob mag kill switch.  However, here’s a link to a FIE “Kill Switch” for use with an ignition switch and mag.  Just looking at the schematic, I think this “Kill Switch” will ground the mag with either the ignition switch off, or the main battery disconnect off to end positive current.

https://fuelinjectionent.myshopify.com/collections/kill-switches/products/mag-kill-relay-for-use-with-ignition-switch

I’ve not used this particular “Kill Switch” so didn’t add to the other thread, decided to start my own thread mostly to send some accolades to FIE.  Alan

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / 50mm roller cam bearings ?
« on: July 01, 2017, 10:25:41 AM »
Anyone have recommendations on when to select 50mm roller cam bearings versus stock sbc cam bearings?  Have been collecting parts the past year to build a Kinsler injected sbc with symmetrical port Dart/Buick 10 degree heads.

Cam specs are:
General Kinetics "Special CR-308/312-10R:  309/313 @.018" - 272/276 @.050" - .188/190 @.200" - 420"/.420" cam lobe lift - 110 Separation; 108 Intake lobe center-line.

Just bought this 50mm roller cam bearing camshaft.  50mm roller bearings I.D. are 1.875, stock sbc cam bearings I.D. are 1.868.  My aluminum sbc is setup with stock cam bearings.

Wondering which is better route, grind 50mm roller cam journals down to fit stock sbc cam bearings, or modify stock block cam placement to install 50mm roller bearing, or other ideas.  Alan

p.s.  All aluminum engine will replace stocker in my old stingray which hasn’t moved in 30 plus years.  Be a street/track car may see 7-8000 rpms.

Spud Miller's Cave / Magneto starting
« on: September 06, 2016, 07:44:57 AM »
Spud – saw this item on your website.  Any reason it’s only for the sprint and super mag, and not the vertex?  Looks simple to install, and advantageous in starting your engine.  Are there any obvious causes to check if your engine is hard starting with a magneto and this item would help?

http://fuelinjectionent.com/webstore/product_info.php?cPath=22_31&products_id=289

p.s. My engine has FIE upgraded vertex with injection.  Prime and it fires right up with mini-starter and one 12v 650cca battery.  I use a FIE timing box too, best product ever!  Alan

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / JW ultra bell/case (fyi)
« on: October 09, 2014, 06:29:31 AM »
I have both of these.  When the case needed recert 2 years ago, I contacted JW and they suggested I take it (clean and bare) to the nhra national event at Bandimere occurring the next month.  JW said they have this service available at all the nhra national events.  Worked fine, took my case, dropped it off (the race trailer was Strange Engineering) and picked up on my way home.  Cost was $50 for a new 5 year cert.  Timing just happened to work out in my case.

p.s.  welcome Dan : )

Rear Engine Dragsters / Lucky me
« on: August 17, 2013, 06:07:43 PM »
So I bid on this 1993 TAD Stirling dragster bare chassis and magnesium body, and yes, I'm the only bidder.  $1500, still can't believe it.  Here's the link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/290-TAD-Top-Dragster-Chassis-w-Mag-Body-Nitro-Alcohol-Hemi-/321181921470?hash=item4ac7ef30be&item=321181921470&pt=Race_Car_Parts&vxp=mtr#ht_558wt_1328

I'm going to have it delivered to my friend's shop "Lander's Engineering" to do his magic, make it one of a kind.... with yes a "flathead."  The original owner just got new chassis (from Prudhomme) and I believe is putting all his parts from this one to his new chassis.  I guess we're both lucky.  Looks like some fun in my future......   DF

Spud Miller's Cave / Fuel System Protocol after the race
« on: February 27, 2013, 07:32:03 PM »
Hi Spud, got a fuel question for you and would like to know how you handle with your setup.  I’ll be new user with fuel injection and nitro and was wondering what steps you take to put car away for a month or so until the next outing to protect your fi system.  Anything additional to do with the fuel system at the end of the season when the car will sit for 6-7 months?   What do you do with the leftover mixture of nitro and methanol (i.e. 25%)  Is it okay to save and if so, how long does it last?  I put new lines on too (see picture) how long do the braided lines last?  How do you check braided lines to verify they are okay?  Thank you for your time, DF

Spud Miller's Cave / Magneto
« on: February 21, 2013, 06:45:52 PM »
Here's picture of the magneto I plan to run this year for first time.  FIE built it with rare earth magnets to increase output.  I have a hei too, but going to try around 25 percent and I hear magnetos work better (right-wrong)?  Anybody using something similar?  DF

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Coupling 2 engines
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:16:26 PM »
Hi Matt, my name’s Alan.  Got a question, a few have asked me and I really don’t know the answer.  I started a twin engine dragster build in 2011, powered by V8 flatheads.  The engine coupler design and fabrication was done by Landers Engineering in 2012.  They also splined crankshaft snout for coupler.  For my question, assume both engines built identical and dyno 250hp-300 ft. lbs. torque.

For back engine connected to transmission, that’s 250hp?  For front engine, connected via coupler, does that add another 250hp?  Would total be 500hp and 600 torque?  Will it hurt either engine’s internals or balance if they do not output identical hp and torque?  Do you have suggestions on clocking both engine crankshafts, like cylinder 1-1 together or……?

Here’s close up picture of coupler and at car show under construction.  Thanks for help and forum.  DF

Roo Man's Room / rear wheel back space
« on: February 14, 2013, 12:33:14 PM »
Roo, I been reading the post here, had a question.  Do you have a preferred back space for your chassis (pretend wheel spacers don't exist).  What do you like between tire sidewall and body panel.

Your Builds / Photo Gallery / intro
« on: February 02, 2013, 07:00:28 PM »
Hi.  My name is Alan.  I've been visiting this website for a few years.
Here's picture of my first dragster, it's a Speed Improvement chassis
from 1960.  These were sold by a company in Long Beach.  I got this
from original owner/builder exactly 13 years ago and got it running
with his backup flathead after it had set with a blown motor for many
years.  His name was Mark Hopkins, and his two friends helping him
with the car was Poncho Beal and Dave Hollingshead.  Lions Drag Strip
"the Beach" was it's home track.  It has been sitting for awhile.  Here
is a picture of another dragster (I know, engine in the wrong location)
that I have been working on since January 2011.  It started as a set
of rails, alot of it just tacked together.  I got it in California in 2009.  If
you were at the LA Roadsters Father Day Show, maybe you saw it for
sale in the swap meet area.  It's also flathead powered.

On another note, last year I ordered magneto coils, magneto wires,
magneto clamps from Spud-FIE.  If you have Mallory Magneto questions
he has answers, correct ones.  Thank you for this website.
