Front Engine Dragsters / Re: slicks
« on: October 28, 2013, 02:15:25 PM »
I have some NEW GoodYear D2585, 31x12x15 tires. When I found out the D2585's were not going to be on a production schedule for 2012 and 2013, I pre-sold 180 tires and GoodYear made another batch for us.

Call me, 805-444-4489 [ Calif] if you'd like the light weight, 22.6 lbs, tires. All other choices weigh 8 lbs more per tire. The D2585 is what is very successful on JrFuel FED's.

I can build 16"x 2" Anglia wire wheels, but 16" is rare, do you have tires for the wheels ?  New 16" tires are hard to find unless you are OK with Chen Shin uni-tread tires. 17" is allot more common and with more choices of wheels and tires, and is still period correct for FED.
Call me, 805-444-4489 [So Cal ],  I may have something that will fit your needs and budget.

Unless it's too late, you might want to consider building your FED to work with 31" tall tires. I have talked to a number of racers that wished they built the car to run shorter tires, and not have clearance problems. With your motor back at 39" and the 33" tires you could dead-hook, there by pulling the motor down below it's HP rpm range.
Our motor is at 48" running an all iron SBC on alky in NHRA Heritage JrFuel running 7.0's at 189mph. The light weight [ 22.6 lbs] GoodYear 31x12x15 tires allow us to keep tire speed up and rpm up to where they are both happy.
The farther back the motor is and the shorter the wheelbase the more weight you have on the rear slicks, which equal more traction, but it could work-out to be too much traction, unless you race at a lot of crappy traction tracks.
Good Luck with your FED project.

Yes Bill and George, the reason I pre-sold 180 D2585 GoodYear 31x12x15 slicks was GY made that tire along with a number of other tires like D1288, GY 33x12x15 "Inactive" and had not made those tires for about two years. But I found out they would make another batch of the 22.6 lb D2585. That tire has worked very well for JrFuel, some Comp Elim cars and other FED, one reason is the light rotating weight, means less HP needed to get to a good tire speed. When I found out last fall that GoodYear wasn't going to make any of the tires in the near future, I looked for options, and called all slick manufactures that made similar size tires. It looked like the Hoosier had the closest , but their J/F tire 31x12x15 weighted about 7 to 8 lbs more, per tire.  So, again that's why I was able to get GoodYear to make another batch, as long as I gave them a good order for at least 150 tires. The tires are being shipped to the two GoodYear race distributors I've been working with last week and next week. The D2585's should be matched and ready for shipping the week of Sept 9'th to those racers that commited to the 180 tire order. If anyone would like to get any of these, call me 805-444-4489, I may have some cancellations.
Since the D1288, 33x12x15 tires were also made "inactive" I asked around to see if I could pre-sell 150 tires. But not enough interest, could be the 33" tall tire racers were trying the Hoosiers. The racers that have tried and race the 33's, like B/ED, C/DA  use 3 speeds, the very fast A/ND team using the D1288's are using 5.38 rear gears, to help over come the taller/ heavier tire.
I hope this information helps.

FYI, Gene and Gary Adams have rebuild-cackled the Adams-Wayre-Mulligan car, and displayed at the March Meet and CHRR and is headed for the NHRA Museum later this year, after I polished and clear ceramic coated the real mag Halibrand wheels and mounted the GoodYear Blue Streaks , which were real tuff to mount, they are old and stiff.  I also built the front wheels too.
I rebuilt the "Addict's" front wheels, and the "Schubert & Herbert" wheels which is owner/built by Ron Johnson. I haven't checked the Museum lately but the Schubert & Herbert, I think it's there now. The "Magicar" is also a cackle car now too, seen at March Meet and Hot Rod Reunion.

Wanted to buy / Re: wanted fuel dragster
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:53:08 AM »
Jim, the J/F car you're looking for looks allot like the Jr fueler I had and raced out of Milwaukee 1964 thru 1968, mostly at Great Lakes Dragway.  But I don't remember seeing that gold seated car at Union Grove or Rockford tracks. In 1969 the Parisey/Hansen team moved on to race BB/GD, which we won at the 69' US Nationals.
Feel free to call me if you'd like to talk about JrFuel racing in the MidWest in the mid to late 60's, 805-444-4489 [ So Cal].
I may know of other FED that are for sale since I talk to dragster racers almost everyday.

Magnus, I agree 22.5° makes sense if only to allow the cranks to live longer. In 70-72 there were no RacePak computers like I use on our NHRA Heritage Jr Fuel now.  I would have loved to have all that feedback that I get now, back then. So clocking the cranks may be a good idea on flat heads, since there is a big difference with Flat Head cranks and BBC cranks.
When ever we raced the Top Gas car we always were asked "doesn't one of the engines hold back the other" but we always thought the extra engine added to the rear engine, "cup half empty vs cup half full" stuff. Again we didn't have any crankshaft issues, just valve train, because we were always trying to run more RPM. Like when we had a match race in Minn in 72, and we ran alky and it went real fast MPH and the motors got up over 10,000 rpm, = bent valves. Ah, another learning curve !

Bill, I don't remember Richie, but then again we never ran further East than Ohio back then, since I was living in Milwaukee Wisc.
The furthest East I ever raced was EnglishTown driving Jerry Newman's Top Fuel  John Buttera build RED on the way to our 73' Div 3 Top Fuel Championship.  Yes, "back-in-the-day" NHRA used to race Top Fuel at Division events.
Maybe they should offer Nostalgia Top Fuel and N/FC to run Div races, that would put "butts in the seats".

Good Luck with the Flat Head project.

In 1970-72 I had a dual BBC Top Gas Dragster. When the chassis was 1'st built the engines were hooker together with sprockets and HD chain. We, Parisey-Hansen team, ran it that way for the 1'st year, but when we wanted to  cut the chassis to make room for a rear engine blower drive, we converted the engine couplers to the type used on rear-ends now. Couldn't see much of the coupler because most of it was inside the rear motor lower blower drive. We ran in the sixes and 225 mph on gas, with no signs of wear on the coupler, even tho we were running the current Top Fuel tires. We tried different clocking, mostly trying to even out the firing, but we found no improvement in ET's. So we just set both engines at TDC, for easier tuning. Which was confirmed by Walt Austin when we talked at a GoodGuys race in Seattle about 2006. One thing that we thought helped our combo, was the front motor was a 396 ci out of our single engine BB/GD we won class at 69' US Nationals, and the rear motor was a tall block 472 ci.
The idea was one motor made bottom end power and the small one made higher end power. We beat the "Freight Train" at the 71 US Nationals with that combo.
Have Fun with your new project !
