Drag Racing / Burnout
« on: September 09, 2016, 09:35:17 PM »
reading the Powerglide Transmission Handbook they were talking about burnouts.  they recommended starting out with small ones and increase to come up with what your car wants concerning tire heat.

i think/know as the day goes along the track is hotter and i imagine ?? you would do a shorter burnout.

so, do some of you guys just burnout till it feels good or do you actually take a methodical approach and get a certain tire temp or shoot for one?

what is a tire temp you would shoot for?

Front Engine Dragsters / strapping FED down in trailer
« on: September 06, 2016, 06:05:42 PM »
do you support your FED for traveling in the trailer or just strap front/rear down and call it good?   what do you do and why.  what should i be aware of and look out for.  what should i use for support if needed.  will be just the FED and golf cart.  (plus coolers etc)

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: shorty glide to std tail shaft
« on: August 28, 2016, 03:50:20 PM »
chassis is being built, so no mounts yet. i think he was going ot set it up for standard long PG.  if the consensus that a long glide is best then thats the direction ill go in. if shorty will work but performance suffers then i wont get it.

i have about 2k in parts (case and bare heads) this guy would trade for.  it is in a stock case but has shield???  so not a SFI rated case.  case would be another 1400... so i dont know if he wants to give me cash or ?  i need to figure that part out.  new trans from what i have seen on the net for say 1800 hp are about 4k.

as side note, IF in A/Fuel do most run PG or clutch setup on blown cars.  i would think at that level a clutch 2speed. ?   if thats the case then a mount would have to be installed anyways for the other trans;  liberty, lenco or ?   not sure what is used.

im just trying to see the best option.

was looking at FTI website this morning and watched a few of thier videos.  one of the videos he talks about his 'pump around system'.  im guessing it cycles the fluid through the torque convertor.

in the video he talked about getting the fluid temperature down, making it more consistent in later rounds etc.

does anyone run this type of setup.  how have you seen the ET"s change as you go rounds.

first, i dont know anything about glides...   an old freind seen me posting on FB about selling some of my vw parts so i can buy a PG.  he had a RED and just recently sold it.   had a spare glide but its a shorty.   so, what has to happen to change it to a normal tail shaft?  does hte output shaft change.   he didnt know much about glides either.   he's going to send me the specs on it and ill know more about it.

thank you

call Eserini’s Automotive Service

https://www.yelp.com/biz/eserinis-automotive-service-santa-clara-3

super nice guys, have the fastest vw 6 cyl in world...    rear engine dragster but they run a power glide.   you can try dave folts too, his is aircooled but they have ran power glide for years or steve phillips at wolfgang international, he runs powerglide on aircooled nitro setup.

these guys can help you get in contact with someone or tell you what you need to know.

but give eserini a call.

Spiral note book and a papermate pen with blue ink

im thinking about using the MoTec CDL3 dash logger and the E888 egt expander.   CDL3 can log up to 500hz and up to 300 channels.   only thing with motec, its not a plug and play deal like Racepak.  but, your not paying 175 to 250.00 and up for each sensor.  just use standard 0-5v off the shelf sensors.  also, you cant beat the data logging software either.

so, 3k for cdl3 and e888.    versus racepak dash, sportsman and egt module.  basically the same price.. but, a standard off-the-shelf oil pressure sensor is what 20 bucks?   verus 250 for race pak.. thats where you would save with the motec in my opion let alone have a better sample rate, more channels, and best data log software on teh market.

as mentioned, its not plug and play like race pak.. so take a little effort to use.

thank you for the replies.  i understand the simplicity of buying a roller that has been on the track already.  i have searched a little bit on the net for other roller FED's.   as it stands right now, i think i can build a roller for about the same total out-of-pocket cost (or cheaper by hair) then to buy someone elses car and have it modified to fit me and or the cost of picking one up out of state (shipping).  im 6'5" 205lb.   so, anything i get ill have to have it modified for me.  there is one for tall guy in texas, thats going to be a 5000 mile round trip, time off work, etc.. that would cost me 3k by the time i make the trip and back.   right now as a roller, ill be less then 20k.  i have all the electronics already from past projects and just need the mechanical fuel stuff (hat, valves, j block, cans, etc), trans, torque converter;  my buddy is handeling the motor details.   nevertheless, im having Bill Comstock build me one new.   although Tuttle is 5 miles from my house, i like Bill and will use him to build the chassis.   I have been down the road of buying a used car, i ended up totally redoing anyways and that is the other reason i want to have a new one.

Mr. Hayden, i am familiar a little bit with the A fuel, my buddy Steve (with the nitro vw FED), has talked about Jr Fuel too with the rules, a, b, c classes.  i haven't looked into either much as not at that point.  never thought about being able to run a different nhra class such as B/ND, thank you for mentioning that.

man, all heads up classes are very competitive, shoot the stories i hear of even the index racing with qualifying etc are super competitive.   definitely will be excited to even make any of the index fields, that would be an awesome goal first.  then to make one round haha.

the ride height sensors are spendy.   i was looking at them for my old car.   i understand this type of racing has been around for eons and people still race till this day with minimal 'accessories' and are very competitive and win races.     i can see with a clutch car it would be important on setting up the clutch and dealing with the hit.   honestly, its just something i would like to do.

shoe polish... SOLD  :)

just a 0-5v sensor.  does not have to be data logger manuf. specific.  can adjust values for min/max in software.    im gonna do some more digging, ill look and see what RPM Performance uses and maybe i can use that too if just a 0-5v sensor.   when doing search's for load sensors Racepak always comes up.  i can find the load sensors themselves and fab a housing etc for it.

thank you all for your replys.   the immediate goal is NE1  and then 7.0 Pro.    will prob run a 454.. 460.. or whatever the engine will work out to be in that area first and run NE1.  it will be a MFI setup, non blown.   we will be racing at sac and Bakersfield, tnt at redding (home).  redding is not the best but its 2 miles from my house and we can at least run the car down the track, make some laps and learn.  looking at schedules, there is three races at sac we could hit and MM and CHRR.   i expect (guess) car with driver non-blown to be about 1600lbs.   i dont know what these things are supposed to weigh so im guessing 1600 with driver.  i weigh probably 210 suited up. (weigh 200 if i can lay off the cookies and cake)

my plan is for as LZ noted, looking at resale value.  with that in mind, it will be built to 2.2c sfi spec.   will have 2 chutes, 2 fire bottles, etc.   rear isnt a floater right now but if we do go a/fuel then of course it will be along with whatever else is needed to run that class.

we have been doing heads up racing in the vw world and talked about maybe trying a/fuel down the road with a blown setup.  then as mentioned, that would require a whole different  engine, trans, rearend package.   i doubt it will happen but you never know.

in talking with the builder, i think he is about 52".. ill have to ask again as i did not write that down on my notes.  i thought i would just ask for opinions.

thank you all again for your input.
