Spud Miller's Cave / fuel pressure low vs tune-up calculator
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:55:35 AM »
REAR FUEL TANK, about 6ft behind pump. Waterman 400 pump @ 50 percent of crank speed [GOOD flow test less than 7 percent fall off/internal leak between 50 and 100 PSI]. Hilborn 2 3/16 injector with #54 spool. Nozzels K385 s[.024] or 410 s Fuel pressure from tune-up shows approx 140 lbs[@8000] @ 75 deg. and 2500 ft. used 103 perccent VE. There is no filter between tank/pump/#12 line. fuel is pulled approx 18 ins uphill to pump. There is a K filter-new element[not inst d backwards] between the pump and barrel valve. MAX press @ 7000RPM is 78 lbs on your telltale nozzle set-up. My cals show approx 120 lbs @ 7000 RPM. Any Ideas? I suspect the rear mount tank? and the accel factor? NO fuel leaks but have not checked for vac or collapse of -12 line. Thanks Al

I plan on being @ Norwalk with a Vietnam Vet friend who loves the drags, but has had a great deal of trouble getting around for the last few yrs. I will be looking to rent a golf cart to get him around and help him enjoy the Weekend. Thanks Al

As an added item, dragway 42 was purchased by an individual who rivals Bill Sr in terms of wealth [Me-Good friends with both owners and an old guy looking forward to his pension-1yr] 42 will be a National Event quality track, both in terms of track and facilities. Will remain IHRA, even though The owner is a successful NHRA class racer! 42 will not reopen until the 2015 season, as there have been numerous construction issues. Check out the Dragway 42 web site for more info. 42 and Norwalk [Summit Motorsports Park] are less than 50 miles apart currently. If a move,as outlined in the news article, were to take place; they would be CLOSER !

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Stud pull

When preping a 400 CI block, I use Iron-tite crack repair plugs to plug the Steam Holes [after tapping hole with tapered tap]. Install with 609 Locktite-TIGHT. Cut off above deck and finish off when decking block. This seems to help control the potential for future cracks and limit those that have started. I will only use studs in these old blocks. Some blocks are so BAD that pulling out the threads cant be avoided. I check and repair all before doing any machine work.  [Just remember to set repair insert below deck,so as not to hit it when decking] Its too bad many good 400 blocks went to the junkyard yrs ago. If needed I have a Std. bore 400 block that has been cleaned and pressure tested. Also has a set of 4 bolt steel caps/studs with it/but NOT installed. I am in North Central Ohio.

Spud Miller's Cave / Stack inj. alky fuel pump size.
« on: April 28, 2014, 10:42:14 AM »
Basic info: 305 cu in chevy[actually 312 cu in] 100% methanol fuel. Rear mounted tank. Most are using a K/W 400 pump. Using your calculator, It shows approx 46% of the fuel going to the Engine. 8 nozzles with .025 or .024 dia. The main is shown to be approx .085. When I enter a KW300 pump, the numbers show a .062 main. and a fuel pressure drop of approx 20 psi. The amount of fuel to the engine also increases to well over 50%. These engines due to restrictions produce approx 520 hp max. Also how much do you think a Fuel filter between the tank and pump affects the ability of the pump/system to function as calculated? Thanks Al
