Spud Miller's Cave / Re: Low percentage of Nitro with Carb
« on: October 17, 2015, 09:46:22 AM »
C/R is approx 9.2 to 1.  dont know if we will even get to 10% Its a one time deal with this engine and dont want to hurt it. I know what you mean about wanting to "tip the can". Have been around nitro since the late 60s, I just havent been in this situation. This should be fun, as this group hasnt been subjected to the Nitro Bug! Will post how it went.

Thanks for your quick reply. Flat Top 350 engine With CI heads. Running locked ignition now @ 34 deg total. What amount would you recommend for total timing. On pure Alky the best HP-TQ on the dyno was @ 36 deg total timing. Will for sure add the Tol. as per a previous post of yours. Thanks again for your help. Al

Spud Miller's Cave / Low percentage of Nitro with Carb
« on: October 16, 2015, 10:11:26 AM »
Like others, Need a little extra power. Running pure methanol thru an Alky Specific Carb. Currently the Carb is set-up to run on the rich side. Only want to run approx max of 10 % . Due to components in Engine. Biggest factor being the CAST Hyper pistons and the PM rods. Have access to nitro and have a FIE hydrometer set-up. Thanks

Is it on gas or alky. It DOES make a difference as to the procedure used to set the butterflies. Gas do when HOT alky do when Cold. Spuds website had a paper that gives a detailed procedure for a beginner. Hope this helps. Al

Have known Tim G. for 25 plus yrs. His amount of experience is 2nd to NONE. As some of you know, Tim worked for UD Harold Since day one. Between Tim and Harold, They have ground over a hundred Custom cams for me,both new and Re-Grinds.

Have a hilborn O pump that is cam driven [1/2 engine speed] This will feed 100% methanol to a 4bbl 750 cfm Willies carb. We know this will require some type of a bypass system or device to keep the fuel pressure @ idle thru 6000 rpm [max engine speed as dictated by MSD rev limiter] to a max of 7.5 psi. These are crate 604 GM engines that produce a max of 325 hp on Methanol. My question is what system or device to use? If a Main  jet can type device is suggested-What size pill to use [@ least to start with] and what spring to use ? If other than std spring. If a regulator-by pass style is suggested, What style/brand do you suggest. Thanks in advance for your help. Al

Thanks for your quick and informative reply on my question. Will search out the suggested components. Engine will be used in a FED that has history here in Clev. Ohio @ Draqgway 42.Hope to have the car finished for the Grand RE-Opening   Al

Spud Miller's Cave / 30% with stack injection

Building a BBC approx 500 cu-in. Alum heads 360 int. runners and a Hilborn 3 in 3pc manifold inside nozzles. Have a 7 amp big cap Mallory that you did. With 30% as a starting point and probably not exceeding 50% due to components in short block. 2 questions: 1 what size pump do I need so as to NOT have to change when upping the percentage [ie Hilb/Waterman/Enderle]and what nozzle would be a good size to start @ 30/35%  2 What C/R do you suggest ? I dont intend to run pure methanol. I dont have pistons yet. Thanks Al

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: jet change for nitro
« on: March 03, 2015, 11:30:27 AM »
I realize this is a Fuel Injection thread. I have read most of Spuds articles on the change over from Straight Methanol to a lower % of nitro ie 10/15%. The point being, no main jet or high speed change is suggested. The Question is with a Carb. When running a Methanol Carb that is well tuned [I know-why run a carb] and then adding the same low % of nitro,Why is a JET Change required? ie larger jet for more fuel delivery?

FYI the lobes on a mech flat and hyd flat tappet are ground on a slight taper. Approx. .0025 when new. The flat lifters are ground on an approx 32 in Radius. On a V-8 8 lobes are ground with the taper in one direction and the othere 8 are taper ground in the opposite direction to help offset cam walk forward or rearward. There is also as problem with lifter bores being 90 degs to the cam C/L forward to rearward. [note: Isky has a way to garage test your block-see their web site] With a Roller cam, Lifters being out of Square front to rear will cause EDGE RIDING of the roller wheel and bearing failures in the roller lifter. Lifter bore missalignment ONLY from left to right as viewed from the front or rear of the block will cause cam timing issues [ie when degreeing the cam per the card. I do #1 and #6 as TDC should be the same for both cyls]  The interface action between the tapered lobes and the spherical lifter bottoms causes the lifters to spin in their bores when unloaded. This action prevents the lifters and lobes from contact in the SAME pattern. The non-additive oils [mandated by EPA to keep the Cat Conv Operating] has caused most of the Wipe-outs. The current OEM Roller cams and lifters dont require these additives[ However most quality Race ONLY oils contain These Additives in a much High PPM than ever in the older oils/ These additives also help with Ring breakin and engine life]. As to End-Play on Racing roller cams-YES it must be controlled. I try to hold to .005 with a roller type thrust brg. Sprockets with no Brg. running against the block face can use .008 max. A little trick is to scrape a Tiny groove from the #1 CAM bearing feed hole [in the babbit] to the front end of the #1 cam brg., so as to lube the sprocket/block face area. Hope this helps you Al

I have an actual Hot Rod book that shows how to build many types of cars from the 60 s. Its not 8 1/2 X 11, but smaller. Found it on E-bay some years ago. The dragster that is shown in great detail being constructed is" The Old Master ". Don Long is shown in many pics building the car. Has the actual blueprints in the article. The text of the article is VERY detailed! Shows step by step how the car was layed out on the shop floor. An interesting note;Don didnt bend the tubing for his cars back then. The company he used is named in the write-up! A great amount of detail about how the engine angle was determined and why. Gives details on the finished car as it was first run @ the Strip. That car was a Clutch Can Car-no tranny/no reverser! I compared some of the pics in my book to a few pics in the Hot Rod article, they are one in the SAME.

Looking for a used - but not abused 3 disk clutch for FED. BBC 6-71 85% car. Now has Hayes with the sheet metal style cover and 6 arms. It no longer locks up as I believe it deflects the cover-no matter how much C/W is put on and the discs also wear heavily run to run. Do you have anything better, that wont break the bank. 11 in discs now. Thanks Al

Try MOREL brand lifters. They are Priv. label for many [Lunati/Bullit/PBM] They tend to be on the large size for a given size listed.  they offer a std roller lifter and a Pro series [Pros are pressure lubed and can be had with roller needle brgs/or bushed [hint-they make ISKY bushed lifters]Or call Ken @216-390-4561 He is WD Let him know Al from PMCo refered you.
