Spud Miller's Cave / down nozzle set of 8 pcs
« on: May 09, 2016, 11:38:50 AM »
Thought it would be easier on here. Have a set of 8 nozzles that were in a set of Brodix 12X12 heads [These appear to be a set of -12s that Brodix rolled to 12 deg-not made any more] The nozzles that were in the heads were Kinsler 580s. According to them, they are NOT worth trying to test and/or reflow. They said they were TWISTED from over tightening in the heads. What do you have that would be a replacement for these nozzles? Or is someone feeding me a line? We have 2 pumps that are flow tested and are Said to be GOOD pumps. Both are K-W s.One is a 500 and other is a 400. The engine is an all Alum 410 in a pavement Sprint Car.Thanks Al

I used to work for Jim Minnick-AA/GD. Car was the NITRO GASSER. First AA/GD to successfully use a 426 Hemi. He won the last Nationals held in Kansas. He is no longer with us. I have a good deal of memorabilia that I have found. I also was @ the old shop in Feb. [Now a Diesel Engine Rebuild Shop] and they had some old stuff that I was given. Al

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: VP M-5 use

Tried it out last Sat. Richened it 6% Believe the engine was lean with the original jet as the 6% still showed slight lean. With the jet change, the engine really picked up. Turned 300 more RPMs with the same gear. Bottom line-It was fast for 7 laps-Then pushed out the head gasket. Believe the problem may be too much C/R [over 14.25 to 1] 38-39 degrees timing, but most of all NOT enough Cam Duration. Will rethink the cam before next time out. Also had Ratio rockers [Stock 1 to 1 These were 1.3 to 1 ratio] Not much block or head damage done. It did let out a shower of Sparks. A little show for the Peanut Gallery!  Thanks for All your info and input. Al

Spud Miller's Cave / VP M-5 use

Does anyone here have real experience with the change-over from straight Methanol to M-5. Jet changes[ with a carb] and timing changes. Do you need a gear change to keep the engine loaded, like on real Nitro.

Its on an oval track Kart,  little less than 1/8 mile.paved. Would LOVE to speak with someone who has/had experience building those Stromberg carbs back in the day. I cant find anyone anymore that can give me direct answers to the carb-nitro questions. Any help is appreciated. These are 25 cu.in. OHV engines that produce approx 30 hp on straight Alky alone with a 10:1 C/R. Only looking to run the low % to get that last 5+ hp without over-stressing the engine.

Front Engine Dragsters / Jim Minnick AA/GD-The Nitro Gasser
« on: January 25, 2016, 04:39:42 PM »
Does anyone have knowledge of the current wearabouts of the last car he raced-thru 1969 season. It was a ROD Stucky Chassis and a late model 426 hemi. I used to work for Jim and lost track of the car years ago. He raced Pro-Stock in the early days of the class. Jim had  passed on a number of yrs ago. There was a person on Race Junk a while back that said he was making Replica frames. Dont know what he was working off. I last saw it in Jim s garage in Cross Lanes W.Va. Decades ago. He may have sold it prior to his divorce from his first wife Gloria. They had 2 daughters-both grown and living in FLA. Thanks for any help. Al

So far, up to 11% we have had no gasket or O-ring issues. We flush all with a pure gas-lube mix @ the end of the race day. The carbs have been modified to run Methanol. I realize the nitro carries extra 02. And that an addle amount of ignition timing is required. In reading Spuds Nitro notes [unless I am missing the point] He says that low % of nitro [believe up to 30%] dont require any fuel system changes.Additionally it would seem the system will provide a RICH mixture with low % mixes? Thats how I read it. So in my case The carb may be rich enough for our 20% max mix.20% is a self imposed limit due to structual limits of the Basic engine. Have a Forged piston and Alum Rod. Low C/R approx 10:1 currently. Have a good fuel system and only on full open for 4 secs or so on Straight section. Thoughts?  Al

Spud Miller's Cave / low percentage nitro/alky mix to be used with a CARB
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:43:47 PM »
I realize this is mostly an FI site, however I need to run 10-15 percent nitro/alky mix to keep up with the Jonses Dont know if the engine will tolerate a higher % mix]. If the carb is jetted correctly for 100% alky, Would you lean/SMALLER main Jet for the 15% mix. I ask this based on your article on low % nitro in a FI system. This is a small engine that uses a float chamber/float bowl below the main jet. The fuel is drawn UP thru the jet via an E-tube that protrudes into the carb Venturi, thus drawing the fuel into the air flow stream. Any suggestions are appreciated. I will run this engine on a Dyno first. I cant measure an air into the engine, but I can Measure EGT and record. On 100% alky, I try to run a Max EGT of 1080-1140 deg. F Thanks Al

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: Old Mags from the 60s
« on: January 11, 2016, 07:29:54 PM »
So those Mags, unlike an older Vertex didnt have the coil inside the main body. The old AA/GD- The NITRO GASSER that I worked on in my much YOUNGER days had a Schiefer mag and Clutch in it during its life thru the late 60s. Thanks for the info.

Have looked @ many OLD vintage mags from the 60s. They all seem to have some sort of additional rectangular addition on the rear of the main body. Cant tell if they were made that way or that was an addition put onto an existing mag. What was inside that area of the mag and what was its purpose?

Now I fully understand what you have been telling me over time. Sounds like MSD did one xxxx of a marketing job! Is there such a thing as TOO much Spark Energy for a given fuel ? You have removed the mystery of Avg. vs Peak energy. Thanks for your clear explanation.

Thanks for the info. Knew about the Nazis using it for a fuel from history channel. I asked because a Jr Dragster engine builder told me that they mixed it with nitro and alky. I had never heard of this before and now dont ever want to try it. As for hydrazine, My old Boss mixed it with Gasoline to run in his NHRA Event winning car [AA/GD] in the 60s. He was a Chemical Engineer and never had a blow-up. Those were the days.

What does this chemical do in regard to mixing NITRO?

I have been looking @ the inlet size also. What good is a a -12 or -16 line if the fitting that screws into the PUMP is only a -8. I understand that a 6 gpm pump would not present a problem, however I can speak from experience that a 7 gpm pump with the -8 threaded inlet is on the edge with alky.

Cant do Nitrous in this case. Already have access to more Nitro than we need. Thanks for your input.
