Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Pump cores
« on: August 15, 2022, 04:31:00 AM »
Dan,
I have a couple pumps I believe could be rebuilt but would need more than just a set of gears.
I don't need them. Is there someplace that wants them or do they just go in the scrap pile?
I also have a couple bands with original lining. Are they cores or scrap.

Altereds / Do I need a wing?
« on: August 14, 2022, 05:27:33 AM »
Some basics for you to work from
120" Altered, 4 link, ridged front
23 T body. Rear tires are exposed. It's the body that the rear deck is a little higher the tire.
1700#s with me in it. 1100#s on the rear.
15x33 Slicks
630 hp small block
Runs 1.12 60s, 5.20s eighth mile at 130 mph. very consistent.
When the sun is out the car is fine. Straight, consistent does just what you would expect.
As soon as the sun gets a little lower in the sky, say below 45deg. the car becomes a handful. 60s hold up but it starts slipping and sliding down track. Pretty sure the tire is spinning.
And I seem to be the only one with this problem so I'm not thinking track.

Spud Miller's Cave / Braided Lines
« on: November 16, 2021, 05:10:03 PM »
Planning on replacing the fuel and trans cooler lines on my car.
I have black fabric covered stuff now and would like to stick with that style.
Just looking for input on Brands if one is better than the other or should be avoided.
Also maybe which is the most flexible .

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Gear ratio and consistency
« on: December 28, 2020, 08:14:07 PM »
Figured this section was good for a gear discussion.
Any thoughts or experience as to what might be more consistent.
My car has 4.30 gear now I have a set of 5.30s if it looks like it might be more consistent.
The track I race at has been running 1/8 mile and doesnt look like that will change any time soon.
1700# Altered, SBC, 630hp @ 6500, 560ft-lbs @ 4700, 1.76 glide. 15x33 slick, converter flashed to 5200 RPM but that engine was about a 100hp less.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Wheels rotate in neutral
« on: July 29, 2020, 06:37:02 PM »
Dan,
With the car on stands the wheels rotate in neutral. I can stop them pretty easily with my hand.
I had it apart and changed the band and drum. Did I get the high clutch too tight?
I adjusted the cable in high gear and the pin slides in perfectly,  all gears and brake seem fine. Should I favor neutral a little on the adjustment?
Thanks for any advice. BK

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Slowing down Transbrake
« on: January 31, 2020, 04:57:32 PM »
Dan,
I run classes were your not allowed a delay box.
I already have an older slower brake in the car but its still not slow enough.
Long through buttons help some but not enough and dont fit well in the cockpit.
I was wondering if you have tried or heard of leaving out reverse springs?
I know there is an odd number of springs.
Do you think it would create a problem cocking the reverse piston in the bore?

Spud Miller's Cave / Primer soliniod
« on: November 06, 2019, 06:30:04 PM »
Spud,
 Or anyone that knows.
I have a primer pump plumbed into my distribution block.
I'm using a nitrous solenoid to stop back flow to pump
I tried a primer valve but wasn't sure it was holding
I have the primer pump plumbed to the in port on the solenoid but I wonder if it should be reversed because the higher pressure is from the distribution block.

Front Engine Dragsters / Roll out time
« on: October 03, 2018, 04:04:32 PM »
If a car 60 foots say 1.25 seconds with a 25" diameter tire. Any thoughts on how long it takes to drive the tire out of the beams.

Spud Miller's Cave / Fuel Contamination
« on: September 10, 2018, 05:29:35 AM »
Spud,
At what point would you think water in Methonal would affect performance.
My car slowed a tenth in the 1/8th and was stuttering just before the finish line.
It seemed fuel starved but everything looks good, Unless pump went bad in one run or line from tank is collapsing inside.
I used fuel from a different source just before this started.

Jon's Wheel House / Radial vs Bias
« on: September 28, 2017, 01:35:49 PM »
Is there a reason we don't run radial slicks on dragsters and altereds?
Or do we run bias ply because that's what we have always run?

Spud Miller's Cave / High speed location
« on: May 20, 2017, 04:55:40 AM »
I just looked at two different schematics for plumbing a high speed lean out with an Enderle Cube and K style barrel valve.
One shows it on the inlet side and the other shows it on the outlet side before the distribution block.
I always thought inlet side was right but that doesn't mean it is.
Is one preferred over the other?

Roo Man's Room / Bolt on Tri Pods
« on: January 06, 2017, 05:53:52 AM »
I'm looking to change the front end on my Altered from welded on Tri Pods to bolt on. I'm also thinking of spacing the mounting tabs out so I will have the option to move them up to an inch for adjustment.
If you don't see a problem with my plan my question's are. Do you feel 3/8" bolts would be enough or should I go up to 7/16". The chassis is CM. Would a flat tab's be enough or would you go with bent tabs like you might use at the motor plate?
As all ways thanks for your input and time.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Burn Out
« on: November 24, 2016, 06:33:41 AM »
I saw this covered a couple times but I didn't see your thoughts on burn outs.
Seems majority favors 2nd gear burnouts. I was told that is tough on 2nd gear and to start in 1st and hit second as soon as tires start spinning.
Can we get your thoughts?

Roo Man's Room / Fuel Cap
« on: September 27, 2016, 06:30:01 PM »
Roo,
Being a fabricator I was hoping you might know where I could locate a replacement fuel cap.
The bung it fits is 2" I.D. with straight fine threads on the O.D. The cap was aluminum with an o'ring in it and knurling on the sides.
I've seen these on several cars just haven't been able to locate a replacement.
 Any help would be appreciated.

Spud Miller's Cave / Tank vent size.

Checking for a friend. Wondering what size the tank vent should be for 1200HP.
