Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: dry sump systems

My set up is making 13" going down the track. It made more on the dyno which is a bit puzzling? Seems to me the gasoline combinations are capable of making the big vacuum numbers. Tougher to seal the rings on methanol.

I'm running a dry sump, Peterson tank, Peterson R4 pump, 50% crank speed, 4 pick ups in the oil pan, N&P oil pan and a Peterson in line filter. There is also a star mountain motor vac pump pulling from the valve cover. Will attach some pictures tomorrow

I like being in there so tight that I can barely breathe! On the bouncing thing...just don't touch the brake handle until you need to turn off

Hmmm? Back in April there's a reply that says stack injection is not in the cards right now. Funny how things escalate ;). Nice car...get er done!

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Compression ratio question
« on: January 22, 2018, 04:44:20 PM »
Our TAD was a roots blown 438 CI Hemi. The most we could get out of it for compression was 11.8/1. It was hard to make any more compression than that due to the combination of the short 3.750 stroke and the piston to head clearance required. The funny car guys back then typically made more compression (around 12.2/1) because they had more stroke to help them out. They were typically 526 CI

Ha! I agree with you Chris. There's some things you can do with the pump, roller bearings and lower pressure to reduce parasitics too. Again...Be careful!

I've been using aluminum floaters and running the minimum number of clutch discs that will still get the job done. Also, the output shaft on my deal is aluminum and it is a tube too. It's a little risky but works on my car because I'm a little over 900 hp and 1360 lbs with driver. And you need to do this to run Comp. Be careful!

I have so many great memories from that track. Here are three of my favorites...

We were there when Don Garlits flipped his T/F car over backwards qualifying against Darrell Gwynn in 1986. Garlits went backwards through the finish line and ended up headed towards the starting line before he got it stopped.

We did a huge wheelstand with our TAD in 1994 qualifying against Bill Barney (RIP) and broke the front end of the chassis and wheels landing. Stayed up all night welding/fixing the chassis and we ran our first ever 5 second run the next day against Mike Kosky. Mike and I were way down the end of the shut down and Mike told me "either you just went really fast or I just went really slow" . We were locked together the whole way down.

Bob Newberry made the first ever 5 second alcohol funny car run. Peter Gallen and Newberry were both knocking on the door with low 6.0s. Peter had actually qualified #1 with a 6.0 something and chose to race in the last pair of cars for first round. Newberry ran in an earlier pair and broke into the 5s. Peter ended up running a 5 too but everyone remembers Newberry because he did it a few pairs earlier.

Anyone else have some cool memories?

Yes I agree with Dave. Lots to it. And...watch what happens to me in the shut down area. This is what happens when you get a midplate leak and your vac pump exhaust tank is too small. xxxx thing tried to hurt me

Wait for it

My idle is about 2500 RPM and there are specific reasons for that. I don't know your combination but you probably don't want or need your idle that high. There's a pretty good thread on this site (maybe Spud's area?) that gets into idle speeds a bit. The car should not creep at all in neutral. Is it a powerglide? With a brake? Check your shift linkage adjustment, your high clutch may be applied or your low band is stuck. You probably want to post that question on Dan Dishon's Den. Good luck...cool car!
