Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Since I sold my FED Look
« on: February 21, 2020, 09:31:01 AM »
Along time ago, when I rebuilt my first dragster, after each part was sandblasted, cleaned and new parts added, I assembled it in our family room, so I could sit in it and plan and watch tv all at the same time.  Alan

Spud Miller's Cave / FIE
« on: February 21, 2020, 09:16:55 AM »
Over the years, I’ve bought items from FIE plus Spud has upgraded a Vertex mag and Super mag for me.  Each FIE product and service I’ve received were top of the line, no issues and always leaves me in a good mood, especially after talking to Spud.  FIE website is the first place I look (and learn) if I need something that moves electric current or fuel for my race car.

Race cars are not normal, with them comes extreme heat and vibration.  You must do all possible to protect and maintain your components so they perform consistently, especially those delicate components.

My dragster has the FIE Red twist knob mag kill switch.  However, here’s a link to a FIE “Kill Switch” for use with an ignition switch and mag.  Just looking at the schematic, I think this “Kill Switch” will ground the mag with either the ignition switch off, or the main battery disconnect off to end positive current.

I’ve not used this particular “Kill Switch” so didn’t add to the other thread, decided to start my own thread mostly to send some accolades to FIE.  Alan

Here’s an excellent online racing calculator which helps decision making.  For tire diameter answer, you input proposed rear gear ratio, anticipated engine rpm and mph at stripe.  This calculator is user friendly and lightning fast with answers.

I had a 1970s dragster with an 8-3/4 Mopar (489) rear with Mark Williams axles and spool and had no issues with it.  It would work fine for your project.

Finnish Fireball - enjoyed seeing your video and very good you’ve found solutions to the launch and darting issue.  It’s a hold your breath moment for the spectators, plus for you the driver when you launch and head for the wall or centerline; not the kind of excitement we want to happen all the time : )

Merry Christmas and Holiday wishes to all.  Alan

Lynn - maybe you already have them, if not, I would acquire the actual front and rear wheels and tires you plan to run.  It will help you setup your chassis clearances exactly.  The 327 is one of my favorite engines of all times.  When placing the engine and pg, look at your oil pan ground clearance, it might end up below the lower chassis tubes.  The more clearance helps easier loading on trailer.  Alan

69427 - my friend Wayne built a Buick Straight 8 engine for his 180” fed in 2012, pg with 8-3/4 Mopar rear.  He sold it last year, went to Wichita Kansas area.  On 30 percent it ran in the 10s.  Alan

p.s.  I see the D/D painted on the back, not sure about 1968, but in the early 1960s, D Class Dragsters were both Flathead and Inline engines.

Is it possible to use tap & die set to install threads in aluminum spacer, and then install bolt in new threads, and try slide hammer to loosen and remove?

Paul – yesterday in the mail I got the June 12 Port News.  It has Classifieds in the very back of this publication.  The second item listed for sale is from the Phoenix area, a used Chevy 12 port bare cylinder head, with header flange and 2 carb intake; asking $4000.  It’s rare item and will probably sell.  That’s twice this week I see an unknown Chevy 12 port mentioned, probably won’t happen again for 5 or 6 years.  Alan

Gassers / Re: FRAME RAIL SIZE
« on: June 07, 2019, 06:50:13 AM »
Ronnyhotrod – for running in the 10s, 2x3 .120 wall rectangular tubing is more than adequate for your lower chassis tube.  NHRA chassis certifying process will focus right in your driver’s compartment area.  There are roll cage tubing size and placement requirements that must be met.  Grinding of welds prohibited.  Minimum ground clearances must be met, although not so much a concern with your Gasser style race car.  Front suspensions are required for a short wheelbase, like your Prefect.  Alan

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Fabricated Fuel Injector

Jacin – your thread is really interesting.

I’ve not forged or heat-treated anything ever, but do have a few hand-forged knives, I appreciate the ability it takes to make one from scratch.  When Jacin mentions heating to “non magnetic” those with curiosity think “what’s that?”

Hope Jacin doesn’t mind me providing a quick explanation, it’s good to know as we all have steel parts on our race cars that are hardened.  In order to harden steel, you must heat it up to around 1500 degrees, and then quench it usually in oil.  When heating the steel in your home forge, it’s difficult to tell when the red hot metal reaches 1500 degrees.

Steel is magnetic, but as you heat it to red hot, it demagnetizes and becomes less and less magnetic.  When a magnet will not stick, it’s now around 1500 degrees and ready to be quenched.  Alan

Jacin - myself and countless others on here completely understand.  Each time you use the trailer and truck brings him (Stan or Carl) back just for a moment.  Good job!  Alan

p.s.  I still have my first car from high school that I drag raced for the first time 45 years ago, it was my dad’s car.  He didn’t know I took it to the track : )  or maybe he did know and just didn’t let on…

p.p.s.  Supercat wrote “Keep up the background info it adds personality to what we do“   Wise words, how true, thanks for reminder.

Finnish Fireball – welcome, catchy paint scheme, would be well received here in America.  I’m guessing your parachute has a big Blue Cross : )  Alan

Very creative, fun to watch and the air bag idea provides plenty of oil pan clearance loading/off loading.  Took some brainwork to design the pivot point work with the tandems.  If we were having an open trailer contest, you’d be in 1st Place.  Hemi truck, hemi fed, surely by now, FTF has influenced you to acquire a Ford inline.
