Spud Miller's Cave / fuel tank to fuel pump elevation
« on: July 21, 2019, 11:45:49 AM »
im wondering if we are having fuel draw issues on our rig.   yesterday on the stand it started no problem three times.  we filled it to the top in the tank and proceeded to start three times using most of the 5 gallons in the tank without issue.  at the track we started it on the stands no problem and im pretty sure i filled it up to say 1/2" of full.  made a test pass and it started no problems in the staging lanes like it should.

we went up for the second pass and it just would not prime/start.  i dont know how full the tank was, im guessing within an 1" of full.   the pump was just rebuilt by Enderle, its an 1100.  it has six startups on it.   the second you take the fuel bottle away it dies.  the last time trying to start he just squeezed the bottle to keep running and it should of primed but it didnt.  so we are wondering if there is a problem with height of tank and pump elevation.

all feds have the tanks way up front.  I just put solid 1.25 alum tubing straight from tank to the pump thinking the braided i had on there was sucking air.  we just stuck on the new pump inlet fitting on it, new o-ring etc and made sure it was seated correctly.

its just frustrating to us seeing how it ran fine one time and then next time its a little bitch and wont run.  its a simple system but we are wondering if the fuel level and pump elevation might be part of the problem.  what perplexes me is how can you start it three times without refilling the tank and it starts perfect each time with varied fuel levels and then when its time to go play it decides not to.  he was pouring the fuel in to keep running and long enough to prime and second he pulled the fuel away it dies so we know the pump isnt priming as the feed line up to the BV is dry.   I checked the pump drive shaft and its just fine.

Lets talk about fuel level and pump elevation.  sitting on the ground the  tank is 11" to the top.  so full would be about 10.5".    the bottom of the pump inlet fitting is 10", the barb is 1", the bottom of the pump is 13.5", the center of the pump is about 14.5 (guess).

Do we need to make a taller tank?

my buddy was doing some research and he noticed a lot of the older feds the motors sat lower in the frame (guessing) so the tanks were tall enough to prime etc no issue.  whats the history on evolution to the new modern chassis design to the older ones if there is one?  I know each chassis is custom fabricated and no industry standard.  is there a target crank shaft height guys shoot for or does that matter.

Spud Miller's Cave / grounding mag
« on: December 31, 2018, 03:20:00 PM »
concerning the mag kill switch.  diagrams show from ground to switch to ground @ coil.   question is for the ground to chassis or ground to motor or ?   i have small 12v battery for dash and electronics.  the ground is floating and not directly to chassis anywhere.

so, where does the 'chassis' ground get connected too on the kill switch?  to the motor, mag base, battery and then ground battery to chassis, or ???

Drag Racing / 7.0 license category
« on: November 03, 2018, 02:47:19 PM »
what nhra license category would be for 7.0 pro?  would that be cat 3? and how many runs to go from sportsman to cat 3.  reading it, it seams like two full runs faster then 7.49.  i thought it was one full, one half, one 60?

also, what category would i select of the ones listed in cat 3?

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / sfi sticker on trans
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:03:23 PM »
does the sfi sticker have to be physically on the trans and bell housing?  when i got my trans, they just left them loose on a tag.  if so, whats a good way to ensure they will attach to the rough finish?

Roo Man's Room / hole size versus width of material min/max ??
« on: October 20, 2018, 04:56:09 PM »
im adding weight bar straps to the chassis.  i think your supposed to use 1/2" bolts for securement.  i was planning on using some 1" x 1/8" strap.  this would leave 1/4" at edges.  what is legal or what would be recommend to safely do this.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / valve seals hemi
« on: September 25, 2018, 09:09:31 PM »
were going to be using Edelbrock Victor Jr Gen 2 hemi heads.  do you use the valve seals on both intake and exhaust or not at all?   my guess would be not to use them for extra oiling on the stems/guides?  also cause oil gets diluted from the meth?  if you dont use them, does the motor smoke more, much, not noticeable?

whats standard procedure for the seals?

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / torque convertor and blower
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:45:27 PM »
getting ready to buy a torque convertor.   running a blown 426 in NE1/7.0 pro

question is, with a blower i have been told that i would leave off idle since the motor/blower will be instant torque?  is that true?

or, would you leave at 'x' rpm thats below peak torque (guess)?

leaving of idle with blower setup wont shock tires as bad?

so, leave off idle (assuming 2k idle, which is a guess) and if the case you would just stage the fed, hit trans brake to hold in place then just release and mash gas pedal or hold brake and mash gas pedal?  if idle is 2k, then torque convertor would be built for 2500 or 3000 or ?

just looking for some input as i have no clue

Spud Miller's Cave / an fitting/bung size for main fuel line
« on: November 08, 2017, 08:34:05 PM »
i got 1 1/8th .062 wall for suction tubing from tank to pump.  what size fuel line from that to the pump?  since it is 1" ID thats probably a -20?

Spud Miller's Cave / crank trigger with vertex mag
« on: November 05, 2017, 07:38:56 AM »
can you run a crank trigger with vertex mag?

trying to get my wiring laid out.  going to use Spud's setup for rev limiter with crank trigger input unless the mag input can be used.  i'd prefer to use crank trigger for tunning as i feel it is more accurate.   i was reading somewhere where you can use or say start on mag then switch to crank?

have vertex mag.

what is the best option for this right now.  will look at changing later as funds permit.  what would be ideal?

Roo Man's Room / suggestions for drive shaft protection
« on: October 29, 2017, 08:33:25 PM »
i have seen some trick setups when it comes to protecting the driver from driveshaft.  one car uses a v-band clamp attached to third member, one car used a slide setup one tube into another that attaches to third member, one car had nice bolt together top to bottom...  im just looking for something simple right now.  what is legal material wise?  does it matter how its mounted?  meaning, does it have to be attached to third member or trans?  or can you just make a mount off bottom bars to support the tube?
