Title: 7.0 eliminator tell me what i need to know
Post by: 225digger on June 01, 2013, 08:04:12 AM
anyone run this class? talk to me , what does a newbie need to know ?

few questions ill throw out there .

7.0 is basically fast index racing right ?  from my understanding you qualify and are paired with a car similiar ET wise and race that way correct ?

bbc with blower is ok ? what about blower size , injection hat , fuel pump  ?

powerglide with air shifter is ok setup on a seperate timer {not delay box}

regular msd 7al-3 type ignition ok  ? im only asking becuase i see stuff about mags in the rules

i think i have figured out what i would like to do with my new project over the next few months , and seeing how maple grove is having a 7.0 index and also new england is , maybe ill give it a shot ?  anything you can tell a new guy would be great .

thanks !

Heads up index racing with no throttle stops.  Shifting must be done by driver control, no RPM or timers to control shifting.  No delay boxes.  Tranny brake and SLE's are legal. Usually 2-3 rounds of qualifying, race done off Sportman ladder (more fair than the Pro ladder) Huge variaty of cars and engine combinations to get there.  Only way to make it more fun would be to change to closest to index over/ under doesn't matter.  As it is, under the index is a loss.  Some groups take an under the index qualifier and add the amount under to the 7.00 and that will be the time of that pass for ladder purposes.

thats why i asked i feel i could have the car done well by then ..... possibly for the geezers event at the grove but thats pushing it . i have a very full shop working on customers projects , but if i plain accordingly i could do it .............  realisticly i just need to finish the chassis and buy the injection system . i already have a blown bbc in my street car {dont luagh it has all the good parts to handle atleast 1200hp }  i need a hand full of small items to finish the car like fire supression / trans / and center chunk , everything else i have and its just a matter of putting together . but im a 1 man band , i have no help . no friends , family doesnt have any interest other than the wife and she cant wrench or weld soooo that leaves me . i have a goal of getting on the track this year , and if i can do something fun other than some test and tune stuff and bracket stuff id be extremly happy but , if things dont pan out there is always next yr which for me id rather do it right than rush it so we will see how it goes

how else could i shift it if no timers for shifting are allowed . i know its a simple you shift it answer , but i cant belive guys are shifting it there selfs ?  or maybe they are running high gear only  ?  maybe im just so used to bracket racing with full electrnics and just pushing 2 buttons to set everything ?

Most guys run an air or electric shifter with a powerglide and shift with a button on the butterfly.

My shifter has an electric solenoid mounted on it. It pushes the shifter forward from 1st to 2nd (powerglide) when a push a button on my steering/butterfly wheel. It is a B&M. I do not use a shift light and you get very good at shifting at the same rpm each time with practice.
Most nostalgia rules state the shift must be done by the driver.......and a button on the wheel is legal.

My shifter is a quarter-pro with an electric solenoid mounted to it.  Button on the wheel.  When strapped in, it's a royal PITA to reach the shifter.

So… is the steering button shifting primarily preferred for better car control, allowing both hands at the steering wheel all the time?

My car is quite handful, but I have a conventional race shifter, which only makes driving trickier.  I'm a purist, so I initially frown upon button shifting, but oh well, I need learn to pick my fights…

In other hand (no pun intended), Don Garlits used to drive a faster car, a lot less stable than current cars, brave enough to go down the track pumping air to the fuel tank with one hand, so I don't think he had the luxury of having both hands at the wheel.

I welcome your comments.

Is anybody here still hand shifting (conventional)?

It's all i can do to reach my shifter to put the car in reverse after the burnout.  I have a hand brake so my shifter is down between my legs. I know a lot of guys with foot brakes that manually shift their cars.
