Spud Miller's Cave / how consistent with 30 to 35% load
« on: September 26, 2015, 11:16:50 AM »
Wondering how consistent 35% or so load is and if there is a % that seems to be less effected by mild changes in weather. Around here sometimes you can get stuck in lanes good while and see some change in atmosphere conditions.     wondering how much change  performance.

Also while on topic. Is running 35% with 6.85 gpm pump on injected 526 ci motor with 12.5:1( can change from 11.5 to 13 with gaskets) with 296@.50 cam fairly safe ?

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / cam differance for alky
« on: September 17, 2015, 11:33:26 AM »
Putting motor together this weekend, well everything except pan and starter ,everything has to be one off with this deal.
I know the cam I'm instelling is far from optimal. 296 @.050 is about 15* too much duration. Thinking 280 range would be lot closer.  The bad thing is started thinking about cam with alky. reasons alky runs cooler, alky uses about twice as much fuel to air which inturn takes up more of intake tracks capacity. wondering if running little less duration on exhaust will help keep more heat in chamber. also thinking have higher intake duration than exhaust might help with complete filling of chamber on induction.

Wondering if any here have done testing or read anything on this? Then it could be the age old case of overthinking and forgetting the KISS principal.Either way its going together with too much cam for now.I need to hear it come to life even if needs few things to be track ready.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / intake runner length
« on: September 15, 2015, 03:48:08 PM »
Ok lets open a  gallon bucket of worms, screw the small cans.

On my injected hemi using BAE billet heads. My first design intake has a 8.5"  valve to top of runner.I have a second thats almost done(tons of welding on one of these) is is my shorty(better veiw too) 6" from valve to top of runner. Both have same top opening,so shorty has stronger taper.By theory shorty should have more top end, longer intake should have broader power band and more towards bottom.Note the current Jr. fuel cars running stubby injector and no tubes while spinning the crap out of them.

while only real world track time will tell which works better. Wondering what thoughts some here might have on which would be better  to  try first while getting base line on  car.  I am leaning toward longer runners right now.  My thinking is broader tunning window easier to get into working ball park. Next question is how much will change effect car.All opions right now no wrong or right.  Well unless you have experiance with being overthinking nut case that loves tunning for power.

Roo Man's Room / engine locations on TA/D
« on: September 11, 2015, 03:39:11 PM »
Watching march meet videos tonight and TA/D cars always a interest.Wondering what engine locations are typically on A/F and blown alky cars. Since I built chassis to meet 2.2c spec it should be legal, motor is TFX with top notch parts.I would need few parts to make car workable piece and I have good amount of experiance with blown alky and huge interest in injected nitro.Just thinking or maybe dreaming.

Spud Miller's Cave / how much pump for 75% plus
« on: August 21, 2015, 04:09:02 PM »
Spud'

Wonder how big of pump I would need if want to run 75%  or more.Engine is 496 Hemi TFX,BAE heads,KB crank  all parts are from my alky setup.12.5 with .040 gasket, but have cpl .090 that can use to drop compression some . Injector is enderle bird with K style BV om sheetmetal tunnel ram.Looking for fun setup to run some.
Thinking I can leave in high gear if needed and changing rear  gears is easy enough,4.11 at present. If needed I have mag 44 I can throw on car. If can setup to run 100% I have no problem with that.I have a good 1100 pump sitting on shelf also if that can be made to work. Not concerned about it rule limits for this deal at moment, more of make good show and not kill to many parts.

Spud Miller's Cave / filter for FI
« on: July 21, 2015, 12:27:03 PM »
Looking for best flowing filter for FI system.Have oberg that I have used in past. Never a issue. It's little bigger tan need, which makes getting mounted low enough to insure no air pocket is little more difficult. Thinking between pump and tank best since it protects pump also.
I always filter fuel twice before it goes into tank, but still vents are open and crap can get into system.
Any suggestion on free flow filter.

Spud Miller's Cave / BV effect on pressure
« on: July 16, 2015, 06:37:02 AM »
Spud,
Question. What causes the pressure to be higher with the  K style BV versus the cube style. Is the pressure claculation on your calculator based on in front of BV? If so I can see why it would effect it.
Been wondering this for while and always looking to learn something new.

Front Engine Dragsters / another ballast question
« on: June 18, 2015, 07:24:59 PM »
Hey always questioning things. Working on car things pop  into head, I keep  the scary stuff in.Others I sometimes over think.

Tonight question. Rear weight ballast. Plan never to need to add weight against my religion, but it happens. Wondering If can add less weight but get same tranasferr if weight is farthure back.  Say inside lower portion of wheelie bar 1" solid rod 60" close to 10#..Well until wheel hits. Other ideas simular,no reason going thru them all.

Of coarse only come into play after reworking weight from front  if needed. From info  I got off thread  on front weight ,I am in ball park.only time will  tell, track time that is.Just getting as many options as possible.

Front Engine Dragsters / FED frontend weight
« on: June 17, 2015, 07:04:50 PM »
Did some preliminary weighing frontend of fed. Trying to decide battery effect.Using 2 set bathroom scales. Jacked car up set scale under each tire. Had battery plus 30# for fuel. About everything else except wheelie bar and chute.Me in seat.No fire bottle, oil ,trans fluid or gear oil. I had 356# on frontend. Ball parkn or left field. Car is 225" with aluminu8m hemi at 49.5"  out.  Yea all combo different  just looking for starting point. Rather smoke tires first run than look at the sky.

Roo Man's Room / Battery position
« on: June 17, 2015, 05:03:14 PM »
Getting ready to mount battery in car. Can mountbehind front axle centerline, move fuel tank back cpl inch's for little extra clearance. You know that electrical and aluminum tank full off alcohol don't mix thing. I can mount in front of axle centerline, leave tank where is with lots of room between. Lot more work including making new nose piece.

Question would be more effective out front or no real differance? If it would be more effective and save maybe having to add more later the work is not issue.

Front Engine Dragsters / Why a FED or Nostalgia racing
« on: May 31, 2015, 04:05:07 PM »
A thread for little fun.

What made you want to race a FED or other style of nostalgia car over more modern boring cookie cutter, oops kind of giving away part of my reason.

For me FED is cooler(to me),different than 10,000 RED's,lighter and little tuning challange to make it work as a bracket car. Most importent is its badass IMO and I am the one flipping the bill.

Spud Miller's Cave / why a magneto
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:28:50 AM »
Why I run a mag instead of 10 piece ignition system.

I have noticed a ton of post on other sites about this that and something else ignition problems. This coild, this box has these issues or pickup could be this. With maneto its either working or not.Its the mag or coil. K.I.S.S..  Funny thing in the bracket worls its almost taboo to use a magneto. Then 20 years ago so was mechanical fuel injection, now half the field has some sort of FI.
