Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Cost to build a new fed????
« on: January 23, 2017, 06:36:37 PM »
mines going to be 225" and i started to think about the overall length as well.  just glad the PO added on to the garage lol.   i also have 28' trailer.  i figure the front end of the fed will be to one side so the golf car can fit.  that should be fine.  can also put the geny behind the cart.

for 900hp the dreamwheel says 7.20's @ 1700lbs.   here is a pretty cool calculator i just stubbled across. http://vexer.com/automotive-tools/1-4-mile-ET-HP-MPH-calculator

what did your door slammer weigh?

Electronics / remote battery / starter cable length
« on: January 22, 2017, 07:24:18 PM »
not gong to mount battery in fed.  will have in back of truck for starter.  how long should i make the cables and what gauge wire.  i'd guess 10' maybe and '0' or 'ot' or should it be '00'

should it be longer, 15'?

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: girdle vs 4 bolt caps on iron hemi block
« on: January 15, 2017, 06:53:44 PM »
All replies are very welcomed.   looking at the 'whale' to just get the FED running for end of this year and next year.  i have aspirations  to run 7.0 but whatever it runs it runs (ne1, ne2,...) we dont expect to go out and set the world on fire and obviously we all know there is a learning curve, we just want to get out there and have fun.   nevertheless, ill use an aftermarket block on the next motor.  for us the 'whale' is just way to get in the game a little without huge expense.

i think the initial plan was to get one. 331, 354, 392 (with 392 block being optimal for tall deck), make necessary upgrades to the combo (rods, pistons, girdle/caps, etc) and get the car running ..   then as things come along for upgrades such as a block (i think you can use donovan 417 block ??   it will all bolt over? ) and then just progress from there.. heads, rockers, etc.

i was just curious as to if you would caps or girdle first or both?

i do not know much about the history or others combos in the nostalgia world but reading and learning.

There is a company that is making a new 392 block. Added material for the 4 bolt caps, added material on the decks and cylinder walls, all weak spots on a 60 year old block intended for racing. I haven't seen a side bolt girdle that was made for a iron block, only for the Donovan alu block

BBM is supposed to be making one, i found an online article about it but BBM website has no information on it. further, Lavoie and Adams was supposed to be making one years ago too.

just as messing with the aircooled vw's.  you could prob put 500-550 hp to stock case for about a year if lucky till it started to fatigue. with big hp in vw you need to get the aftermarket case... about 2500-3500 depending on which one you got. i get the deal stock block can only handle so much... been there just not in this world.

dealing with iron block on say 331, 354, 392 hemi block.  when do you go to 4 bolt caps or what is better the caps or girdle.   what hp run the girdles to or can you do both?   would be blown, prob 354 but looking for 392... shooting for 7.0 pro.   so 1000, 1100 hp guessing .  i dont know anything about this so looking for insight.

Events / Re: Nostalgia Race in Redding CA for KAN
« on: December 18, 2016, 06:17:25 PM »
looks like NE1 and NE2 only.

a few nice things is you can camp at track. they run friday night, sat (which will be main race day), and they might do general bracket race on sunday if you want more racing.

the stands are packed for this event every year.  they are making great progress with the redding track. in fact, the recieved an award from NRHA for most improved track this year.

how much does a stator generally cost (for extras).

doing a little reading this morning.  convertor size, how do you now or what determine the diameter of convertor to get.   in reading this site http://www.ultimateconverter.com/torque-converters-for-drag-racing about 'how do i select the right torque convertor' they list the following

Quote
    7-Inch Converter - Ultra-high performance from 6000 to 9000 rpm stall speeds.
8-inch Converter - High performance with stall speeds from 4000 to 7000 rpm as dictated by your engine combination.
9 and 10-Inch Converters - High performance applications, especially for engines with power adders, such as nitrous injection, super and turbo-charging. Generally for engines with 1200 hp. Stall speeds can be designed according to application.

im confused with the statement between the 8" and 9-10" converters.   in the 8" statement they talk about RPM and in the 9-10" statement they talk about power adders and HP. based on this then blown use 9-10" even though HP might be below 1200hp.. say 1000hp?  so non-poweradder use 7" or 8" and with poweradder use bigger?

whats the determining factor between using a 8" or 9" lets say.  what would be used for a bbc blown making 1k hp versus 1200-1400hp? ... or would you use the same convertor?

when looking at the convertor itself, is it the stator design (blade angle, count) that determines the stall?   dont they take a oem convertor, split it, then do they change other things other then stator?    i watched some vid's on oem convertors, just dont understand what they are changing inside to get the desired affect.   do they change blades etc on the housings?

Front Engine Dragsters / electronic dash
« on: November 19, 2016, 02:04:24 PM »
are we allowed to have a racepak type dash in a FED if running NE1 or 7.0 pro?  i thought i read somewhere they want to keep it nostalgia appearing so no dash's only a tack or misc gauges.   if so, i guess then this would only be for nhra sanctioned race right?

Spud Miller's Cave / fuel/ignition timer
« on: November 04, 2016, 06:11:17 PM »
looking for a little education on fuel and ignition timers on a mechanical setup.   would like semi-indepth info on how say fuel timers are used in a blown (or n/a?) setup.   how is it different then say using pills and pop-off's (or bleed valves?).   do the timers whether electric, c02, or ? operated take fuel away or add fuel?   how many would be typically used.

ive been trying to do some research and dont find much information.  see people discussing whether electronic solenoids are legal to be used in certain classes vs c02.   ive read where (i think) a timer or solenoid would be used at burnout to limit fuel so the motor doesnt load up (is that correct?)

on the ignition side, are the timers controlled by rpm or time?   i know from my experience with my old car that had a turbo, take timing out till peak torque then you can start to add some back in.  is that the case with electric timers on blown/mechanical setup? ive looked at Electrimotion site, i see the leahy box and misc timers and ways to hook up etc depending on how many you want.

anyways, just looking to learn something.
