How do you keep the air cleaners from flopping around on the U-joint?

My thoughts too. Above the top ring land is usually several thousandths smaller in diameter than the skirt and for it to be contacting the wall so heavily I wonder if you have too much bore clearance, exacerbated by an unfavorable L/R ratio?

It seems fewer and fewer manufacturers are offering re-webbing services. As Calkins states it is usually nearly as inexpensive to just buy a new set and sell the old stuff on the internet to somebody who doesn't care about dates (mud / rock crawlers, sports car racers, vintage racers, etc.). Some manufacturers will discount a new set if you send back your old stuff.

I always wondered why belts had such a short life. Yeah, I get it that some owners let them drag on the ground up the return road, get sun faded from UV, soaked in trans fluid, etc., but most of the sets I've replaced look like new when removed. It would seem to me that replacement could be a judgement-call-attached-to a-sunset clause, i.e. if your belts look OK at the discretion of the tech guy you can continue to use them up to an extended cut-off date. The rule seems to be aimed at an exceptionally few bad occurrences. How many of us replace the belts in our daily drivers every two years?

"My goal is to have it look like it could be driven right in to the photograph."

I like that. Good luck with your project.

Awesome car - wonderful project.

Will it be a
static display?
cacklefest?
exhibition pass?
or
make competition runs?

With reproduction era standards I think probably not to be used in competition, no?

Congratulations Greg. The track lighting seems to be shining AT you. Is that a distraction?

Thanks denverflatheader.
Actually I am running a 4.56 in the Orange Logghe car and 4.30 gears on the blue S/P car, which, logically speaking, is entirely backwards, since most tracks now run the Super Pro class as an eighth mile race. The S/P car needs a 4.56 gear and the Nost Comp Logghe could be slowed down with a 4.30. I've never had the two jacked up side-by-side to make the pumpkin switch and I have enough other work to dissuade me from doing it.

Yes, that is what I was alluding to. Sorry for the confusion. I mention this in the hope of saving some racer a hassle at tech-in.

Here's a video:

I have been running this index class for three years now.
It has been a real challenge; first - to get a good reaction time on a .400 pro tree, and second - to run right on my 10.50 index. This task has been harder since I am usually the slowest car to show up. All the other diggers and altereds have V8s and I have to look back over my shoulder at the oncoming faster car to gage the stripe. Not good.

What I finally decided to do was ignore the other car completely at the top end. Rather I have worked on perfecting what I like to call "landmark racing". That is to say, pick a landmark on the track - a crack in the pavement, a guardrail post, a vehicle or pop-up parked along the fence, and lift at that point. This requires a lot of discipline to not try to get back on it at the stripe. In the video at the in-car pass notice the bell crank on the throttle linkage, as it goes from WOT to full closed about 200 feet before the lights.
Works for me. Your results may vary.

Good solution.

I do want to point out that NHRA does not allow quick push-button pins to be used in this application. I am using "solid" farm implement pins for mine, the kind with a hair pin clip.

I am today's Milan Dragway Nostalgia Comp Eliminator champ. This year it was a three day event with separate races on Saturday and today. My buddy Dan Snyder (552 ci Ford powered '23T altered) won yesterday's race and me today in my 305 Ford six. In the final round I had to run a FED (8.50 index) on my 10.50 index in the Last Logghe altered. He ran 8.52 to my 10.52 with a m.o.v. of .016. For me it was a pedal fest all weekend as my altered was capable of running under my chosen index. What fun!

I thought some of you FED and altered guys might want to know that Milan Dragway (MI) is having their Nostalgia Drags on Sept 22,23,&24. They have a Nost/Comp class for us run on half-second indices. See you there in my "Last Logghe" altered.

Here's mine. I set it about 2" up, but mine is spring loaded so I get a little more rise than rigid ones.

Re: wings on altereds
A noted A/A racer once told me if you are not going 200 mph wings are a waste of time and the increased downforce will not over come the losses associated with aero drag .
